From the Principal…..
Dear Parents and Carers,
It was lovely to welcome back all our families for the start of Term 2. We trust that our students were able to recharge their batteries ready for another busy term. Term 1 was an extremely busy one with a variety of opportunities for students to participate in. We have a few different faces around our school this term, we welcome back Ms Kimberley Wilmshurst in a support role and Ms Erin Breen-Goninon as a TA. We also wish Ms Dick and Mrs Ryan a lovely break as they are on Long Service Leave for the first few weeks of the term.
As we start entering the colder months and sickness rears its head, we are seeing more absences within our school community. There is a chronic shortage of teachers currently across the State which makes finding relief incredibly difficult. Where possible we try to use teachers that are known in our school however this is getting much harder and there will be times where we are unable to find relief. In these instances, the leadership team will generally cover classes but we may get to a point where we must collapse classes to ensure that students are adequately supervised.
Every School Day matters.
Start Term 2 right by making every school day count!
Coming to school every day gives your child the chance to learn and grow, and connect with their mates and teachers. Its where bright futures start and where they’ll benefit the most.
When your child goes to school every day, it helps them to:
- learn better.
- find interests.
- make friends.
- connect with teachers.
- be happier and
- have a brighter future.
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us about your situation. We will support you, in whatever way we can.

LYTE Theatre Residency
We were very fortunate to have Mandy and Jimmy from the LYTE Theatre company spend a week in our school working with all our classes. The students participated in a variety of different drama experiences individually, in small groups and as a whole class. It was great to see that our students stepped out of their comfort zone and tried something new.

Move Well, Eat Well initiatives!
We held our first Move Well, Eat Well Initiative for the year in our ‘Ride to School Day’. What an amazing participation rate, as we had over 100 students ride or scoot their way to school. A huge thankyou to families for supporting students to ride safely to school.

On Friday 19 May, we will be participating in the National Walk to School Day. We already have a number of students who walk to school but are hoping that we can increase this number! If you live too far away to walk maybe park your car a few blocks away and walk together. Those students who walk to school on the 19 May are invited to visit the hall once they arrive at school to join in with a healthy snack of fruit and vegetables to really give them a great start to the day. A reminder that students under eight must walk with an adult. More information about Walk to School Day can be found at Walk Safely to School Day 2023 .
Respectful School and Volunteer Policy
Our school welcomes the contributions of volunteers and visitors and recognises the role they play in supporting and promoting a safe and respectful school environment, by behaving in a way that is aligned with the Department for Education, Children and Young People’s values and goals, and school values. Respectful school volunteers and visitor behaviour is critical in ensuring that the school environment supports child, student and staff wellbeing.
Our school’s response to unacceptable behaviour of volunteers and visitors is focused on ensuring that everyone feels safe while at school or during a school activity. If you would like further information, please refer to policy.
Athletics
At the end of Term 1 we held our school athletics carnival for our Grade 3-6 students. I was very proud of the efforts of our student, they showed the value of courage, growth and aspiration. Mrs Fleming has been working with our students to set goals relating to both participation and also skills and knowledge around our athletic events. Pleasingly we saw some fabulous individual performances, a particular highlight was the participation rate in the 1500m event. From the school carnival, a team was selected to attend the Northern Midlands carnival at St Leonards. Our school team performed exceptionally well at the event placing in most events. A special congratulations to Seth, Dulcie, Archie, Armani, Rylah, Brayden and Brae-Lee who represented the Northern Midlands at the State Athletics Carnival held on the 5 May.

Colour Run
WOW, what an amazing experience for our first Colour Run. We are very appreciative of our School Association for their organisation and support of the day. There was certainly a lot of excitement leading up to the event and it certainly exceeded our expectations, we even managed front page of the Examiner!! It was a wonderful fundraiser for our school, even worth having to wash my hair three times to get rid of the slime! Thanks to our families for their support in gaining donations.

The PPS School Association Fundraising Committee would like to thank everyone for their support with our first school Colour Fun Run which was held on 4 April. It was a great success, the students had a fabulous time and won lots of great prizes! We raised just under $14,000 which is a fantastic result. A special thank you to Mrs Dean for her support and willingness to be slimed, all the volunteers on the day and to Yvonne Segda Photography for her brilliant photos!
Thank You

Sharing of Learning with Families
It has been great to see so many families connected with our sharing platform, Seesaw. You will have noticed since the beginning of term that some work samples from your child/ren will have been uploaded. This is the first of our sharing of learning with families. These pieces of work are common assessment tasks that have been completed by the majority of students across the state in government schools and then moderated against a specific set of criteria linked to the Australian Curriculum.
In addition to sharing evidence of learning, we will also be offering parent teacher conversation in Week 9 this term. We encourage all parents to attend these meetings with the focus being on sharing the student report and further sharing of work samples. Information about bookings for the conversation will be sent home in Week 5.
If you still haven’t connected with your child’s portfolio on Seesaw, please see your child’s teacher.
Grade 5-6 Winter Sports
Our 5-6 students always look forward to the opportunity to participate in the Friday sport roster against other schools in the Northern Midlands area. In 2023, we are able to offer football, soccer and netball. Our first game is on Friday 12 May where we host Evandale. Games will start at 1:30pm and we welcome parents to come along and spectate.
ANZAC Day
We had a wonderful turn out for the local ANZAC Day Service at Perth. Our students always look wonderful marching down the main street! Our Cabinet members Arthur and Ruby read a poem on behalf of our students and Evie and Lily laid a wreath. We followed up with a service at school. In art, Mrs Clayton has spent time with the Gr 3-6 students creating ceramic poppies, they looked just beautiful as a backdrop to our school service. A special well done to our Cabinet members who ran the service.

Mother’s Day Stall
As in previous years, our hard-working School Association organised our Mother’s Day stall. Families donated items towards the stalls, which took place on Monday and Tuesday. Not only is this a fundraiser for our school but also very popular with students. I am sure I am not the only mum who loves to receive a specially chosen gift on Mother’s Day!
Sickness
As the weather gets cooler, we are starting to notice more illness creeping into our school. We ask that sick children are kept away from school until their symptoms have disappeared. A reminder to parents that in the instance that a child vomits, they should stay home for a minimum of 24 hours after the last vomiting episode. We thank our families for their support in keeping our school community safe.
