From the Principal…..

Dear Parents and Carers,

Seesaw

Many classes have already started using Seesaw to share learning and messages and information from individual classes. This is a wonderful platform to showcase student work, provide feedback and share learning. It also provides opportunities for parents to engage with the learning that our students are doing. I would like to remind parents that if you have issues that relate to things other than learning that we ask that you email teachers or contact the office, as teachers will not be able to reply to these via the chat option in Seesaw. There are still a few classes that are in the trial phase, but we envisage all classes will be live by the end of the term. If you have any questions about the program, please let myself or the classroom teacher know.

Kinder Parking and School gate

Just a gentle reminder that the gravel car park in Fore Street is for staff parking only. We have some staff who don’t start their workday until 8:30am and are finding it difficult to get a park. We understand that there is added pressure at the moment with the tradespeople from the Child Care Centre often parking in Fore Street. We are hoping for this to ease over the next few weeks as the centre nears completion.

We also ask that parents, to help ensure the safety of students at school, keep the gates closed as you enter and leave the school grounds, especially around Fore Street and our Fairtlough Street entrances.

Ride2School – Friday 24 March

This coming Friday is National Ride2School Day. As part of our Move Well, Eat Well accreditation, we are looking at ways to encourage our families to be active and healthy. Walking, scooting or riding to school is a great way to start the day and get ready for learning. We hope to see lots of families taking up this opportunity.

3-6 Athletics Carnival

On Thursday we will be holding our Grade 3-6 Athletics Carnival. For some students, participating in the carnival can be daunting. Regardless of how your child feels about it, we encourage them to have a go. Our carnival is a great way for students to demonstrate the values of Growth, Aspiration, Courage and Respect. Mrs Fleming has been working with our students around goal setting for the carnival in terms of Growth, Aspiration and Courage. For some this may be around participation, others it may be learning a new skill or having a go at something that is out of their comfort zone. Respect is also a value that we demonstrate at our carnival by encouraging others, celebrating the success of ourselves and others, it can be seen through positive words and cheering for our peers.

We are lucky to have the support of Kings Meadows High School House Captains to help our day run smoothly. Our School Association will also be keeping our students in Grade 3-6 well fuelled by holding their Sausage Sizzle fundraiser. The team to represent our school at the Northern Midlands will be selected from this carnival. This team will compete at St Leonards on Monday 3 April. We are looking for a couple of parents who may be able to come along as carnival helpers, if you are available on that day and hold a WWVC card, we would love your support.

Clean Up Australia Day

On Tuesday 7 March, our school joined in the Official Clean Up Australia Day. The majority of our classes spent their time focusing on our school environment buddying up with other classes. Our 5-6 students extended their clean up to our local community. We were surprised by the amount of rubbish that we found along the roadside and in our local park areas. Our students did a great job, we hope that next time you are out and about in our local community you notice a difference!

Opportunities to be involved in our School – School Association

One way you may like to be involved in our school is to nominate to be a member of our School Association. The work of this group is to help our school continue along their improvement journey by considering budgets, creating policies, supporting improvement goals and implementing changes.

Our School Association meets once per term, our AGM will be help on Tuesday 28 March at 5:00pm in our school staffroom. If the School Association sounds like a group you might be interested in joining, we would certainly value your contributions and voice in driving our school initiatives. Please contact the office for a nomination form as we have a number of parent and community vacancies. If you have any questions about joining, please make contact.

Student Leaders

It was wonderful to finally recognise our 2023 Student Leaders at assembly this week. They have been eagerly awaiting their badges and I know they will be worn with pride. All our leaders have been working hard in their respective roles. Our House Captains have helped ensure that we have playground sports equipment as well as providing support at our upcoming Athletics Carnival. Our Student Parliament including the Cabinet have been meeting each Monday at lunchtime to talk about events and issues that affect our school. It has been great to see their proactive voice in writing letters to key stakeholders in our school to help make positive changes.

Brixhibition

Our annual Brixhibition event was once again very popular with lots of creative entries. The people’s choice winner was Rylen whose creation will be displayed at the annual 2023 Launceston Brixhibition show at Door of Hope in the school holidays.  A big thanks to Mrs Batty for organising our school competition.

During Week 5 students and teachers celebrated books, reading and storytelling. In each classroom students engaged with stories written by Tasmanian authors, and connected with Tasmanian characters, settings and landmarks. 5/6 Whyman were inspired and created their own stories for younger students featuring a place they identified as special.

A highlight of the week was seeing our senior students reading books with early childhood children. It was wonderful to see reading buddies immersed in books and enjoying the experience of sharing a book.

The Reading Ambassadors have some very exciting events planned for 2023 to build a love of reading at Perth Primary School.

Colour Run

Our 2023 Colour Fun Run is happening on Tuesday 4 April.  This is our major school fundraiser for the term and students are invited to create an online profile, collect sponsors and earn some great prizes!  Funds raised will go towards several playground upgrades.  Everyone is encouraged to participate regardless of the fundraising amount raised however if your child raises at least $20 they go in the draw to SLIME MRS DEAN!! Or maybe they might win the PIZZA LUNCH with their classmates for being the class to raise the highest amount. On the day, students will need to bring along a white t-shirt and preferably old shorts and sneakers.  The colours used are non-hazardous powders composing of corn starch and food dyes.  Parents are welcome to attend the event starting at 1:40pm, but we do ask that you remain in the designated viewing area.

NAPLAN

Last week our Grade 3 & 5 students completed their annual NAPLAN testing. We were very proud with the way our students approached the week. For many it is a tiring week and the cognitive load can be quite high. Our students were calm and motivated to try their hardest which is all we ask of them! A big thank you to the rest of the school who also have to be very flexible to allow our Grade 3 & 5s to have the most successful week.

LYTE Drama Residency

Next week we are excited to have Mandy, Jimmy and Penelope from Launceston Youth Theatre Ensemble completing a Drama Residency at our school. Over the week all classes in the school will have a chance to participate in sessions which will enable them to experience the dramatic arts. This residency reflects feedback from parents in our External School Review about our connection with the arts. Make sure you ask your child what they did in drama next week.
