Calendar of Key Events
From the Principal…..
Newsletter – Term 4 Week 8
Dear Parents and Carers,
I can’t believe this is the final newsletter for the year. The weeks are getting busier as we prepare for our end of year events and celebrations. It has been wonderful to be part of the Perth Primary journey in 2022 as we began our new normal life with covid. It has been wonderful to be able to welcome families back into our school to support and encourage our learners.
Dance Fever ‘Impact’
We were very fortunate to be offered a school position in Launceston College’s 2022 Dance Fever show. We had 26 very keen Grade 4-6 students who stepped out of their comfort zone to try something new. Alongside this, we were very grateful for the enthusiastic leadership of Miss Dargaville who supported our dancers every step of the way. We were extremely proud of each and every one of our performers, many of whom have no previous dance experience. Our Grade 3-6 classes visited the show and came back sharing their enthusiasm and pride for our students. We hope that Dance Fever becomes a regular event on our Perth Primary calendar. A big thanks to Miss Dargaville and Mrs Biffin who supported our dancers.

Esk Band
On Monday 21 November, our Esk Band students performed for our Grade 2-6’s to showcase what they had learnt in 2022. Learning an instrument is a difficult skill which requires commitment to practise. It was wonderful to see how much improvement all our students have shown. We look forward to seeing how they improve in years to come and also welcome new members in 2023.
On Wednesday 30 November, six of our continuing Esk Band students joined all the other Esk Band students from across the North to perform in the Extravaganza at the City Park. Our students have been practising songs at school that they performed as part of the combined band. Mrs Shephard accompanied the students and shared what a wonderful job they did representing our school. Well done to Olivia, Eloise, Scarlet, Bree, Dulcie and Erin.

Triathlon
Once again Perth fielded a very large team of enthusiastic athletes. It was great to see so many Grade 3’s trying the event for the first time. A big thanks to Mr Muir for his lunchtime training and to all the parents who transported children to the event. It is an event I always really enjoy being part of, the sportsmanship and encouragement from all our students and families for each and every athlete was fantastic and made me feel very proud to be part of the Perth Primary school community!
ECE Athletics
What a great afternoon we had at our ECE Athletics Tabloid Sports afternoon on Monday. Our Grade 6 leaders did a wonderful job organising and running the afternoon. The focus was on participation and this was evident in the number of students taking part in all the activities.

Swimming Carnivals
On Friday 25 November, we held our Grade 3-6 Swimming Carnival at Hagley. The level of participation in the ‘down the pool’ and ‘across the pool’ events was extremely pleasing. It was wonderful be able to have families encouraging the swimmers at the event along with our supportive students who cheered for every participant. Thank you to Mel Fleming for the organisation of the carnival and selection of the representative team for the Northern Midlands Swimming Carnival. An excited group of students competed at the Northern Midlands carnival on Friday 2 December. The representative team participated with pride and returned to school with many ribbons, smiles and a sense of teamwork.
History Time Travel
On Friday 9 December four of our students Trae, Logan, Morgan and Bree will be participating in The Launceston History Time Travel Challenge. This is a rich, full-day learning experience involving history-based challenges around Launceston designed for enrichment and extension. Our students will be accompanied by Mrs Forrester. This is a wonderful opportunity to our students to be involved alongside students from Scotch Oakburn, West Launceston and Port Dalrymple School learning about the history of Launceston.
Nativity Play
On Monday 19 December our Prep students will be performing the annual Nativity Play. I am very excited to see the performance after watching some very enthusiastic rehearsals. Thanks to our Prep-1 teachers for organising this event.
School Choir
Our school choir led by Miss Dick have been invited to a number of community events at the end of the year. They will be supporting the Community Christmas Carols on the 17 December and also performing the Nativity Play. To add to their already busy schedule, they have also been invited to perform at the Launceston Airport on Monday 19 December to entertain Christmas passengers as they wait in the departure lounge. We are very appreciative of the support of Miss Dick in giving our choir students so many wonderful opportunities to perform within our local community.
Grade 6 Leavers Assembly
On Tuesday 13 December, we will be hosting our Grade 6 Leavers Assembly in our school hall from 1:00pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to recognise our Grade 6 students as they come to the culmination of their primary school years. A big thank you to Miss Doran, office staff and all our Grade 5-6 teachers for the huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that this event is successful.
Grade 6 Leavers Dinner
On Thursday 15 December we will be hosting our Grade 6 Leavers Dinner at the UTAS Stadium Function Centre. This is always a special night for our leavers to get together and have a formal celebration dinner. This is organised by our Grade 5-6 teachers and we are very appreciative of the time that they put into organising events such as these for our students.
2023 Class Structures
Each year there are a number of factors that impact the makeup of our class structures. Some considerations include number of students in each grade and gender mixes, ensuring an even spread of behaviour and academic levels in grades as well as ensuring that structures allow support for those students who requires additional adjustments.
Teachers have spent considerable time looking at 2023 class placements ensuring that all students receive at least one person they requested as a ‘learning buddy’ in addition to balancing classes in terms of grade levels, genders, social, emotional and academic abilities. Class placements will be announced on Friday 16 December when students are given an opportunity to meet their 2023 teacher and visit their new classroom.
The following structures will be in place for 2023

Staff Changes for 2023
We are at the time of the year when staffing changes are nearing finalisation. We will sadly be farewelling Ms Karen Lovell who will be heading off to take up a position at Waverley Primary School. Ms Lovell has been at Perth for three years and we will miss her very much but know that Waverley are very lucky to have her in 2023.
Miss Zoe Bolch will also be leaving Perth to take up a position in Hobart where she is relocating with her partner. We wish Miss Bolch all the best for her move South.
We are also farewelling Mr Isaac Klug who as a contract teacher is moving on. At this stage we are unsure where Mr K will be heading but know there will definitely be a school that will be very happy to have him in 2023.
Mr Muir will be taking 6 months leave to head to the mainland as his wife has taken a position in sunny Queensland, we know he will be thinking of us on those cold Tassie mornings!
We welcome back Mrs Amelia Woods who has been on maternity leave since 2021, she will be joining us two days per week. Miss Nicole Shepherd will be joining our ECE team as a full-time teacher. She has recently been working at West Launceston Primary School.
Also congratulations to Mr Spencer Walter and his wife Aja on the birth of their baby girl Wren. We look forward to hearing all about their new addition in 2023. Staff farewelled Mrs Leanne Dunn as she retires from her role as School Business Manager after 14 years at Perth Primary. Past and current staff presented Leanne with gifts from both staff and School Association.
I would like to personally thank all our students, staff and families for a wonderful and productive year. At this stage I am unsure as to whether I will be returning to Perth in 2023 however I am confident if there is a new Principal they will love Perth as much as I have. I hope to have confirmation regarding the position prior to the end of the year.
I wish everyone a safe and relaxing summer holiday break to enjoy some time with family and friends. Thank you to the entire school community for the wonderful support they provide our school and look forward to working in partnership with you all in 2023.
