Newsletter – Term 3 Week 6

Dear Parents and Carers,

External School Review

As part of our commitment to continuous school improvement, our school will be involved in an External School Review. The purpose of the review is to continue to support our school to raise achievement, sustain high performance and provide quality assurance and confidence in government schools.

All Tasmanian schools are externally reviewed every four years. The focus of the Review is to evaluate school performance. The Review team consists of a chair and trained Review Principals. Our school Review will occur on 21 and 22 September.

During the Review, some students, parents, School Association members and staff will be asked to provide information to the Review Team in a number of ways. These include;

  • Individual interviews
  • Group discussion (with students, staff or parents)
  • Visits to classrooms

We are really looking forward to the Review and what it will offer for our school in terms of planning for the future. If you are interested in being involved as a parent in the Review, please contact me via the front office. If you would like any further information on the Review process, please let me know.

Parent Teacher Interviews

We are offering another opportunity for parents to have a conversation with your child’s teacher. This will occur in Week 8 (12 to 15 September) for students in Prep to Year 6.

This could be an opportunity to follow up on previous conversations you had with your child’s teachers if you wish to do so, teachers will also share evidence of learning with families. Teachers may request to meet with some parents to discuss any concerns they may have. Should this be the case, you will receive an email from the school requesting an appointment be made.

We understand that not all families may feel they need to meet with teachers again, considering parent teacher appointments were only held late last term. All parent teacher meetings are scheduled to run for a 10-minute period on the below dates and times:

Monday, 12 September commencing at 3:15pm and concluding at 4:00pm
Tuesday, 13 September commencing at 3:15pm and concluding at 6:00pm
Wednesday, 14 September commencing at 3:15pm and concluding at 4:00pm
Thursday, 15 September commencing at 3:15pm and concluding at 4:30pm

Father’s Day Stall

Thanks again to our School Association for organising the collection and packaging of gifts for our Father’s Day stall. All classes had the opportunity to visit the stall on Tuesday 30 August to purchase something special for someone in their lives. We are very appreciative of the support of our parent volunteers in giving up their time to ensure this is such a successful day. Over $600.00 was raised on the day.

Combined Esk Band

Last week, three of our continuing Esk Band students worked with students from other schools at Newstead College to perform as a combined band. Dulcie, Olivia and Scarlet have been practising the music in our school in preparation for the performance. The girls showed great courage to step out of their comfort zones and join in with the extended band to perform. Miss Doran was lucky enough to accompany them and said they were amazing.

Bike and Scooter safety around our School

After a number of near misses with bikes, scooters and pedestrians over the last couple of weeks, we are implementing some changes to improve the safety of our school community. The footpath in front of our school is a very busy time especially at school pick up time. We have been talking with students who ride bikes and scooters to school to request that they ‘walk their bike/scooter’ when they are in the vicinity of our school. Mr Muir has painted some lines on the footpath to show the designated ‘walk zones’ and students who ride to school have been out to have a look! We appreciate your support in talking to students who do ride or scoot to school to help us ensure the safety of our entire school community. We are also reminding students about the importance of wearing a helmet if they are riding bikes or scooters.

KMHS Challenge Day

Last Thursday, our Grade 6 students visited Kings Meadows High School’s Challenge Day along with students from other feeder primary schools. It is always a wonderful opportunity for our students to visit our feeder high schools to get a taste of what high school life will be like. Our students participated in a variety of subjects. We thank KMHS for their support in providing this opportunity to our Grade 6 students.

Book Week

This week teachers and children have been excited about books and the magic of reading. There has been a buzz as children search the windows for the Children’s Book Council Award (CBCA) books to participate in the scavenger hunt. Each day children have waited to find out who will be sitting in the reader’s chair and which favourite book they will be sharing. Many children solved the mystery of the shredded book by joining in class discussions and using the daily clue. Classes have read the CBCA books in lessons and deeply explored the themes and author devices in the texts. Congratulations to our Reading Ambassador’s for their ideas and organisation in making Book Week a memorable event for everyone in our school. We have enjoyed fostering the love of reading this week and look forward to seeing costumes on Tuesday 6 September. We invite families to join us for our parade at 9am on the courts. Due to COVID-19 we will have a designated spectator area.

Learn to Swim

For the last two weeks, our Grade 3-5 students have been involved in the Swimming and Water Safety Program at Launceston Aquatic. I have attended a couple of the sessions and have been very impressed with the courage and growth shown by our students. It is an incredibly tiring two weeks for these students as they not only swim during the school day but also maintain their focus on learning when they are back at school. It is a fantastic program that is heavily subsidised by the DoE to ensure that all Tasmanian students are safe around our many and varied waterways. Thanks for your support in ensuring our students are prepared for swimming (and learning) each and every day.
