From the Principal…..

Newsletter – Term 2 Week 10

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to all the families that made the time to come in for our Parent/Teacher conversations, it was lovely to see parents once again around our school. Our teachers have been working extremely hard preparing for these conversations and moderating student work in preparation for student reports. Although we do have specific times of the year for these conversations, I encourage all families to make contact with their child’s teacher at any time if they have any worries or concerns. We are always happy to meet to discuss ways in which we can support our students.

Staff Farewells

As we come to the end of the term, we will be sadly saying goodbye to two of our Teacher Assistants. Portia Rigby is leaving to pursue her teaching career and Kathy Lockwood has an exciting time ahead as she welcomes her second child. We will miss both Portia and Kathy around our school and thank them for their commitment and expertise in our school.

We are also very sad to say goodbye to our SBM, Tina Todman, who has been successful in gaining an SBM position at Mowbray Heights Primary School. We are excited for the opportunity that has arisen for Mrs Todman, but we will certainly miss her smiling face, organisation and professionalism in running the business operations in our school so well. We are currently in the process of appointing someone into the position of SBM, we are hoping this will be finalised by the end of term.

Oodie/Hoodie Day

Who does not love a day when you can wear your comfy Oodie to school? A big well done to our School Parliament for organising a very successful fundraising dress up day. The students chose to raise money to go towards research into MND. A huge thank you for the generosity of our school community as we were able to donate $412.95 to MND.

School Beanies

Our Student Parliament group have been very proactive this term. One of their suggestions was around being able to wear beanies at school during the colder months. We set about thinking of some possible solutions to the issue and the students came up with the idea of a school beanie. They chose the final design and we completed the order. We were all really excited to see them arrive last week. They have been very popular and unfortunately have all sold out, but another order is being placed and will take around 6-8 weeks for delivery. We would appreciate parents naming them by sewing something identifiable inside the beanie as there is no tag or similar to write on.

Reader’s Cup

The team ‘Big Brains’ represented our school at the inter-school Readers’ Cup on Wednesday. They demonstrated the understanding of the texts by confidently answering the quiz questions and showed their creativity and deep thinking in an extra challenge. We are very proud of the commitment shown by all our participants. Our Reader’s Cup teams have been putting in many hours of their own time to prepare.  To acknowledge this, we have planned a small celebration next Wednesday for all participants.

Lunchtime Basketball

Our lunchtime basketball roster has once again been very popular. It has been great to see the improvement of all students who have participated, some for their very first games of basketball. I have loved watching the sportsmanship, team spirit and encouragement during our games. Lyons managed to take out both the Grade 3-4 and 5-6 Grand Finals. Well done to all those who participated. To finish off the term, a Grade 6 All Stars team will be taking on the staff in a lunchtime match. It is sure to be a great spectacle and I am hoping that the staff can get the win through a height advantage!

Esk Band

On Monday, our first year Esk Band players performed for their parents. We are fortunate to be able to offer Esk Band as an opportunity for our students. Each week, tutors come to school to work in small groups with our students. In 2022, there are ten students involved in Esk Band learning a variety of instruments. Well done to our performers, it was great to see the progress you have made this year.

Main Road Crossing

Recently there have been some concerns about the operation of the Perth school crossing on the Main Road, particularly in regard to the crossing of children across Frederick Street. Unfortunately, there seems to have been some confusion over the ability for School Crossing Patrol Officers (SCPO) to stop traffic and assist with crossing at the mouth of the Frederick Street intersection. Although there has been some scope for this in the past, the current road rules make it very clear that SCPOs are only permitted to assist children across the road at the designated crossing point. SCPOs will continue to watch the intersection to make sure that children are making safe decisions when crossing Frederick Street.

If you think that you would be interested in helping with the operation of the Perth crossing, the Department of Growth are looking to increase the pool of staff to work at this location. There is currently one permanent position available, as well as casual positions.

If you feel you would like to discuss any issues with the crossing or are interested in some information regarding SCPO positions, then please feel free to call the SCPO Co-ordinator for the North of the State on 03 6165 4045.

School use over holidays

Our school grounds are a great resource for the entire Perth community, and we encourage our families to make use of our grounds during the holiday breaks. We do ask that you encourage your children to behave in a respectful manner if they are on the school site during holidays. We have spent considerable amounts of money this year after vandalism has occurred at our school. We have recently installed a very good security system which does help us find responsible people however it is still costly to our school to fix things. If you do happen to see anyone acting suspiciously around our school, I encourage you to make contact with either the school office or our Facebook page.

Keep safe over the holiday break and look forward to seeing everyone recharged ready for Term 3.
