Newsletter – Term 2 Week 8
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week we saw the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. As much as we all find the mornings cold, it is the time of the year when we can start to look forward to some warmer and longer days. As we start to look towards Term 3 and hopefully some warmer weather, I was excited to find out that I would be continuing as Principal at Perth until the end of the year. I am very proud of our school and look forward to being a continued part of our school community moving forward.
Staff Leave
I just wanted to inform our school community that Mrs Todman, our School Business Manager will be on leave for the remainder of the term after the sudden passing of her partner. Our children have all coloured in a beautiful paper flower to add to a wreath to pass onto her.
Assemblies
It was very exciting to be able to welcome our families back to school for our first assembly in 2022. Mrs Whyman’s class did a wonderful job hosting despite facing a few technical difficulties. We were also entertained by some creative writing from 2 Colson. Our next assembly will be Tuesday 28 June hosted by 5-6LR with P-1D sharing. We have planned out the dates for the remainder of the year and we hope to see many more parents and carers attending our assemblies.

Prep 1 Excursion
Last week, the three P-1 classes headed off to Tasmania Zoo. To say our students were excited would be an understatement!! They participated in a variety of activities around the Zoo, having lots of animal encounters and learning a lot about both native and exotic animals. The weather was beautiful and it was a very enriching day for our learners. A huge thankyou to the P-1 teachers for all their work in preparing for the excursion, a lot of time and effort goes into organising excursions. I know that our students were very grateful for the opportunity to visit such a fun and engaging place.

An Update of Face Masks
Public Health has advised that from Monday 27 June 2022, face masks are no longer mandatory in schools and Child and Family Learning Centres. This is because of reduced COVID-19 cases in our community.
It’s important to continue to:
- stay at home if unwell, and get tested
- practise COVID-safe behaviours such as frequent handwashing and sanitising
- be up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.
Students, staff and visitors are supported to continue to wear face masks if they choose to. Face masks are still available at our school if you need them.
When face masks are required
If you’re a close contact , you are still required to wear a face mask indoors as per current Public Health advice.
From time-to-time our school might identify activities or situations where masks are required to be worn. We ask for your support when this happens and know that it is in the best interests of our students, staff and our school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us directly to discuss.
For more information about COVID-19, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.
Student Sickness
Although we are seeing less Covid cases at school, unfortunately we are seeing an increase in children being absent with cold and flu symptoms. We thank you for your support in keeping sick children at home. We are also seeing a number of students presenting with tummy aches and vomiting. We do ask that students remain home for at least 24 hours after instances of vomiting to avoid passing on any nasty bugs.
Parent Teacher Conversations
A reminder that this week we are holding parent teacher interviews. Thank you to all the parents that have made appointments to talk to your child’s teacher. We want to work in partnership with families to support your child’s learning. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child, these conversations are a wonderful way for our teachers to answer or clarify your concerns. Teachers want to help students achieve their best – we are all on the same team.
Readers Cup
Three very enthusiastic and committed teams have been busy participating in Readers’ Cup this term. Last week they put their comprehension and memory to the test in a quiz where they answered questions about the six books, they have each read. This week the teams will be presenting and recording their creative challenge. Each team member has embraced the challenge by working collaboratively with peers from Grades 4, 5 and 6 to choose one book to identify the theme and decide a creative way to present the theme to the audience. The winning team from our school will them compete against many other Northern Tasmanian schools. We wish our three teams the best of luck this week. A big thanks to Mrs Biffin for her support of our teams.

Kindergarten Cross Country
Yesterday, our Kinder students had their chance to participate in their Cross Country Carnival. There were a lot of excited (and slightly nervous) runners, with the help of the Grade 6 leaders the day was a great success. Thank you to our parents and carers who cheered our Kinders around the course.

Parent Help and Volunteers
It is wonderful to be able to have our parents back into our school. There are many classes that appreciate parent helpers for classroom support and also excursions. We are also keen for some new helpers in our canteen on Wednesdays. If you are interested in helping out, please talk to your child’s teacher or the school office. A reminder that our volunteers are required to have a current Working with Vulnerable Children’s card.

Dakin Cup
On Friday the 10 June the 5-6’s went to Evandale to play for the Dakin Cup. The weather was perfect to play sport. It was an enjoyable day. We played football, netball and soccer.
The Dakin cup started because two brothers had children going to Perth and Evandale Primary Schools. They decided to have a game each year during 5/6 sport where the two schools played each other for the cup. The school who has won the most sports that day wins the cup.
This year Perth won all three sports. Football won 83-24, Netball won 10-17 and Soccer won 7-2. Evandale has won the Dakin Cup more times than Perth, but the last two years Perth has won.
Netball: Bree - “I was very happy when we received the Dakin Cup two years in a row.”
Soccer: Seth - “I was really happy in my first year in 5/6 sport to win the Dakin cup. I hope everyone had an enjoyable time and they should be very proud of themselves.”
Football: Archie - “It was a good match; they played well.”
Football: Zack – “We played well and Evandale put up a good fight.”
Netball: Sienna - “It was very fun to play Evandale and we were competitive in a nice way and I’m happy we won.”
Soccer: Emmanuel - “It was really fun playing as a team and seeing the other team play.”
Football Coach Mrs Ryan- “Everyone contributed on the day. We encouraged each other, shared possession and the game was played with terrific sportsmanship.”
Soccer Coach Mr Klug - “I thought it was a really good performance from both teams. Both sides played competitively and respectfully, and everyone seemed to have fun which was ideal.
Netball coach Mrs Whyman – “Our team played a great game, as usual the Dakin Cup was played with great sportsmanship.’
