Newsletter – Term 2 Week 4

Dear Parents and Carers,

The building of a positive school culture through the Department’s values of growth, aspiration, courage and respect continues to be a focus at our school. Last week, we led our staff through some work on what roles the stakeholders hold in our school community around the development of a positive culture. Some key points that came out of our discussion was around the collective responsibility of all our stakeholders, staff, students, parents and carers included being fair and reasonable, demonstrating a growth mindset, using consistent language, being a good listener and having high expectations.

As a staff we are also focusing on looking for the positives, ensuring every student feels as though they are valued, being aware of cultural and social backgrounds, modelling the values and differentiating the learners so all students have the best opportunity to succeed. The values will continue to drive our work around creating a positive culture at our school.

Attendance

The weather has started to get colder and we are starting to see the winter bugs impacting on our students. Our focus for Term 2 is to ‘make every day count’, we are still seeing a number of students absent on a daily basis without valid reasons. If your child is sick, they should be at home, if not we want them at school. Evidence shows that regular attendance at school is critical to children and young people achieving their full potential, remaining engaged in learning, and leading happy and fulfilling lives. Although it may only be a day here and there that a child is missing, over the course of the term or year, this really adds up! From Week 5, parents of children who have missed more than 5 days of school with an unexplained absence will receive an attendance letter. Thank you for your support in ensuring that your child has the best opportunity to achieve success at school.

NAPLAN

We have now finalised all our Grade 3 & 5 NAPLAN testing. Our students should be commended in the way they approached the testing. Whilst there are many opinions about NAPLAN, it is a well-established, external series of benchmark tests, by which judgements on students, schools and systems can be made. Its results are useful for our staff to reflect on our own practice. Although NAPLAN does provide us with an overall picture of school trends because any test is only done on one day at one particular time, it has its limitations in perfectly reflecting a student’s actual literacy and numeracy ability. In 2022, we also remember that these students did not sit NAPLAN in 2020 because of its Covid-19 cancellation, therefore, it was also their first attempt at this style of testing. I worked with the Grade 5 students and was very impressed in the diligent way they completed the online testing. It is a big ask for students to spend the best part of a week completing testing however our students confident, calm and conscientious approach reflected the preparation that our teachers put in place prior to the testing gave students a great foundation to feel successful in these tests.

Waste Warriors

Each Tuesday afternoon, Mrs Maher works with a committed group of students, our ‘Waste Warriors’ they fulfil many roles in our school including helping to reduce our school waste as well as educating our school community about recycling and sustainability. They recently created a video to remind our school community around how our school is supporting the recycling of soft plastics. They have done a fantastic job! Check out their video from the link below

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge has started in Term 2 for students in Prep to Grade 6. The challenge is for students to make reading a fun part of their day and read 10 books in 10 weeks. We encourage parents to get involved. Helping your child choose books, reading to them and listening to them read are great ways to help your child to engage in reading. Perth Primary School are aiming to have 100% of students record at least 10 books by the end of term.

Lost Property

We have an overabundance of unnamed lost property at the moment and also a few named items that have gone missing. Can you please check your children’s jumpers and jackets to ensure they have their own? We really encourage all parents to ensure school items are named as it makes return much easier!

Cross Country

On Thursday we will be holding our school Cross Country Carnival and we are very excited to be able to welcome our parents, carers and friends back to our school to support our runners. Mrs Fleming has spent considerable time ensuring our event can go ahead in a covid safe manner. In order to support this, please ensure that you follow the directions of parent spectator areas.

5-6 Sport

Our 5-6 students are also enjoying participating in the NMSSA 5-6 Sport roster. Initially a decision was made at the association level that spectators would not be allowed however changes to the Term 2, DoE covid plan have seen a relaxation to these rules. The current guidelines (as of 3rd May 20222) state that “inter school sport organised by schools on or off DoE sites, during school hours, can have spectators in attendance if they are held outside and there is a designated space away from students and staff.” To support us to remain covid safe, we ask that parents are attending ensure that they are spectating away from groups of students and avoid mixing. I have spent two great Friday afternoons umpiring the footy and have been very impressed by the sportsmanship, encouragement and inclusive nature of our students. I know Mrs Whyman and Mr Klug would agree with this in their respective netball and soccer teams.

School Association Election Day BBQ

Last Saturday our School Association organised an election day BBQ and cake stall. I would like to personally thank Tara Henderson for the huge amount of work she put into organising the fundraising effort. There were a number of other parents and staff who volunteered on the day and we are very grateful for their support. We were inundated with baked goods which proved to be a popular part of our stall. A special mention to some of our donors, Pyke Family, JBS Australia, Pure Foods Eggs, Woolworths Kings Meadows and IGA Perth. The fundraiser was in support of our 2023 Grade 5-6 camp and I am very pleased to say that $2,524.70 was raised which is an outstanding effort.
