Newsletter – Term 2 Week 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to school for Term 2, it is great to see our students excited to return back to school. This term we are having a focus on the Department of Education’s Values of Growth, Aspiration, Respect and Courage. As parents and educators, we are children’s biggest and number one influences; and as such we have a responsibility to teach our children about these values so they may grow up to be caring, confident, high achieving and respectful adults.

Our teachers have spent time considering how the values can support a positive school culture at Perth Primary. For this to happen, it is important that all the stakeholders in our school are aware of the values, this includes students, adults in our school and our families. We use the values to guide us around a shared understanding of behavioural expectations and provide us with common language to overcome challenges and celebrate success.

On a fortnightly basis, we will be celebrating student achievement through our merit certificates which reflect these values. Our staff are working hard to plan explicit teaching of values and what this looks like in our school. We are using consistent language when talking to children about challenges and successes.

Anzac Day

During the school holidays, I was very proud to support our students as they represented our school at the community ANZAC service. Over thirty of our students attended the march and ceremony from Prep to Grade 6. A special mention to Payton and Scarlet who read a beautiful poem and to Morgan and Logan who presented the wreath on behalf of the school. I was especially proud of how respectful our students were throughout the service and it was lovely to receive some positive feedback from local community members about the great turn out from our school.

Last week we also held a school-based service, our student leaders did a wonderful job presenting the service over our PA system due to poor weather not allowing us to meet outside. Again, all our teachers commented on how respectful classes were during the service.

Covid Changes

As you are most likely aware there has been changes to the rules around close contacts. From Monday 2 May, close contacts will no longer need to quarantine for seven days on the condition that some precautions are taken to limit potential spread if they develop COVID-19.

What this means for our students:

Students who are close contacts will be able to attend their school if they meet the following requirements:

  • Are well and not showing any COVID-19 symptoms
  • Have returned a negative RAT or PCR test when notified they were a close contact
  • Continue to test daily before leaving the house to attend school during the next seven days

Our school still has a large supply of RAT tests for any families who require them, please contact the front office to organise collection.

Another change is that schools are no longer required to inform parents of individual positive cases in classes. Our school still has procedures in place to track and manage any outbreaks in our school and if this happens there will be communication to parents.

Making everyday count…..

Being at school is the best place for our children. It is where they learn and grow alongside their friends, and where they benefit the most. Going to school not only promotes academic success, but also helps build important social skills, relationships and confidence. Every COVID-safe measure is being taken, so that all students can learn in class safely.

What we do know is that every school day counts. Bright futures begin at school, so if your child is well enough to attend school, being in the physical school environment is the best place for them.

If your child is sick, then they need to be at home. Please remember to phone our school office or complete through the Schoolzine app or let your child’s teacher know about any absences. If we do not receive communication from parents, the office will record an unauthorised absence.

Launching into Learning

Last Friday it was wonderful to see our LiL families back on our school site! We have had to make a number of changes to our program to ensure it can operate in a covid safe way. We appreciate the support of our families in navigating the changes and especially the patience they have had working with our new booking system. Mrs Clayton and Miss Delphine put a great deal of time and effort in creating a beautiful learning environment for our LiL children. We look forward to seeing more of our families on site in the coming months.

Parent Teachers – Week 8

A heads up for families to be aware that we will be holding parent teacher conversation in Week 8 this term (Monday 20 June – Thursday 23 June). This will be an opportunity for our teachers to share learning progress with families and discuss successes and challenges. Further information about parent teacher meeting and the booking process will be sent out in the next few weeks.

Please note, that Miss Wrankmore’s class will hold their meetings in Week 10 as Miss Wrankmore will be on leave in Week 8.

NAPLAN

This week, our Grade 3 & 5 students have been sitting their NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. Our teachers have spent time preparing students for NAPLAN, all our students experienced a practice online test so they could get used to the set up and tools that are available in the online testing environment. For some students, a formal assessment can be quite daunting. As teachers, we know your students as learners better than any test can. We use the information from NAPLAN to support our future teaching but are also very aware that each of our students is unique and will approach formal testing in a different way. I have personally been supervising the Grade 5 testing and have been extremely proud of the effort and attitude our students have shown during the testing. They have demonstrated the values of growth and aspiration, trying their hardest and showing persistence when faced with a challenge.

Road Safety Reminder

For those who use our road safety crossing, you may have noticed that we have a new crossing guard, Frank. He has been in contact recently to ask us to remind students about safety when crossing the road, particularly those students on bikes. Although our main road is not as busy as it used to be, there is still a steady stream of traffic. Please encourage your children to use the crossing as the safest way to ensure that they make it home. Frank’s role is to ensure the safety of our students in crossing the road, he requests that you wait until he asks you to cross. He will also report any unsafe driving to the correct authorities as another measure to keep our children safe. Thank you for supporting our school crossing guard.

I hope all the mums in our school community had a wonderful Mother’s Day last Sunday. It is always beautiful to hear our children talking about what the special people in their families mean to them! A huge thank you to our School Association for the enormous amount of work they do to get the Mother’s Day Stall up and running. To see the excitement on our children’s faces when it came to their turn to purchase their something special was heart-warming, I hope you all enjoyed your thoughtfully chosen gifts.
