Newsletter – Term 1 Week 8
Dear Families, Students and Friends
It is just so wonderful to be back part of the Perth Primary community. Last Monday I was greeted with so many smiling and welcoming faces. It is lovely to return to a place that really feels like home! I have been visiting classes on a daily basis and it is wonderful to see such settled learners. Our playground is also a happy and supportive place, it is great to see our older students supporting the younger students at play time.
Northern Midlands
A huge well done to our Northern Midlands Athletics team that competed at St Leonards last Tuesday. They braved the elements and showed great resilience and team spirit to come away with many great personal and team achievements. A huge thanks to our parent volunteers Brodie and Claire who supported the team in adverse weather conditions with a smile on their faces! We also appreciate the work of Mrs Biffin, Mrs Ryan and Mrs Quilty who accompanied our team. I would also like to acknowledge the huge amount of work organisers put into organising a ‘covid safe’ carnival, there was a lot of pressure to cancel the carnival and I know our families are extremely grateful that we were able to field a team and compete on the day.
COVID update
As you would be aware, last week we were declared an ‘outbreak school’ be Public Health. This is a result of three classes reaching the outbreak threshold of five cases in seven days. I want to sincerely thank our parent community for being so proactive and supporting with testing and keeping symptomatic children at home. Also a reminder that all adults on DoE sites are required to wear masks when entering buildings. At this stage, our positive case numbers seem to be slowing down which is a great sign. As a result of advice from Public Health we have made some changes to limit the amount of cross class mixing which has meant some of our phonic and reading programs are temporarily on hold until we are again safe to work in mixed classes.
Symptoms to look out for:
Thank you to our entire school community for your cooperation this term by practising COVID-safe behaviours. As you know, an important COVID-safe behaviour is to stay at home if you’re unwell and get tested for COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test. Public Health tells us that the number of cases of COVID-19 in children is low, and they’re likely to have milder symptoms. It’s a good reminder to be mindful of the symptoms of COVID-19 in children. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 in children are cough, fever, runny nose and gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
For more information, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.
If you need support translating or interpreting this information, please contact the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450.
All schools are currently facing difficulties finding relief staff and as a result this means we often require multiple people across the week to cover different relief requirements. We do try to minimise disruptions to classes however in the current climate, this is difficult to manage. A huge thankyou to Miss Doran and Mrs Todman who co-ordinate our relief, this is an enormous job that requires many hours of work outside of school hours.
Reporting
As you may be aware, in 2022 there are some changes to the way student learning is reported to parents. This Friday you will receive a report for your child/ren in Prep to Grade 6 that details their approach to learning for Term 1. As always, if you have any questions, concerns or wonderings, I encourage you to make contact with your child’s classroom teacher. For our Kinder families, our teacher, Mrs Shephard and Mrs Wyatte will also be communicating to parents about how our Kinder children are transitioning to their first year of school. In Term 2, we will be holding parent/teacher conversations and parents of Prep – Grade 6 children will also receive a summative report based on the new 9 point reporting scale that is being introduced across DoE schools. More information around reporting will be shared throughout the year.
LiL
Last Friday morning, with the sun shining, our LiL group met at the Train Park in Perth. It was a beautiful morning filled with singing, exploring autumn colours and playing. Mrs Clayton and Miss Delphine set up a wide range of experiences for our pre-school aged children. It is great to see so many families engaging with our LiL program and as much as we are looking forward to being able to hold it on site, meeting in our beautiful local areas is also a wonderful opportunity.
Students accessing external support
As a school, we are fielding an increasing number of requests from external supports such as Occupational Therapy or Speech Therapy at school within school hours. Our teachers work hard to plan specific and targeted learning for all students and as such our preference is for students to be in with their classroom teachers in key learning times, especially until lunchtimes. We appreciate there are times when outside providers do require a visit to complete an observation, however we encourage regular support to be completed outside of school hours. Due to an increase in classes this year, we also have minimal spaces for external supports to operate. If your child is seeing someone externally, please encourage the provider to contact the school office or Miss Doran (Support Teacher) to discuss any school visits.

Vaccination of Children 5+ years
Although we have many COVID-19 safety measures in place across our sites, vaccination is the best way to protect children aged 5+ years against COVID-19. While vaccination is not mandatory for a child to attend school, it is strongly recommended. Children are to have two doses to be fully vaccinated. Please share this important message with your school community using the attached templated newsletter article and social media post.
Rapid Antigen Test (RAT)
Families can request additional RAT’s should they need them. Please contact the school office. If you are displaying COVID-19 symptoms you cannot enter the school site to collect. You will be required to contact Public Health and make other arrangements.
How to use a Rapid Antigen test video
Public Health has developed a video on how to use a rapid antigen test to support families.

NMPSSA Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday twenty-six athletes represented Perth Primary at the Northern Midland’s Athletics Carnival. The carnival was modified with COVID-19 restrictions to allow the event to go ahead. Having no spectators and sitting away from other teams did not affect our excitement and commitment to giving one hundred percent to the track and field events.
Students consistently demonstrated the departmental values, and it was a privilege to witness the way in which they encouraged their teammates and celebrated team success. We returned to school with soggy socks, some ribbons and pride in our school.
Congratulation to all our competitors

Vandalism
We love when our students and families utilise our school grounds after school and on weekends. Unfortunately, we are still encountering acts of vandalism and damage after hours. If you are utilising our grounds and notice any damages, please ring the police so that a quick resolution can occur.
