Newsletter – Term 4 – Week 4
Dear Parents, Students and Friends,
Last week saw our participation in both the Infant Fun Day and our own swimming carnival at Hagley Farm Primary School pool. Both of these events provide opportunities to see our students in different settings than our beautiful PPS school environment with everyone showing our Strive for Five and the values and qualities which are such an important part of our inclusive culture. Well done to all our students who tried something new, gave their best efforts and showed their care, support and appreciation for the efforts of others.
Thank you to our staff who worked hard to make sure these events were carefully organised to guarantee a successful day for everyone.
Teacher Learning Day
On Friday we worked together to look at PPS data for NAPLAN, Early Year PAT and Phonics. This careful analysis helps us understand what teaching and learning is being successful and what we need to do next. Research clearly tells us that reading is the key to success at school and into the future. We will be trialling several changes to our strategies for the remainder of the year so that we can help all students understand what they know and can do now and what they need to learn next. This work will help to inform our school improvement priorities for next year.
NAPLAN
As you would be aware, our students in grade 3 and 5 participate in NAPLAN testing every year in May. Results from these assessments were sent home with student’s last term.
Our overall data indicated that PPS either matched or exceeded scores for similar schools in all but one of the domains (reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy) for both grade 3 and 5. In grade 5 PPS matched or exceeded scores for similar schools in all domains apart from grammar and punctuation. Our grade 3 students matched or exceeded scores for similar schools and Tasmanian averages in writing and spelling.
School Association Disco
Many thanks to members of our School Association who will be hosting discos for students on Thursday evening. These events are planned as fun and safe experiences for students to enjoy time with friends. Students are invited to dress up, but scary masks, weapons and injuries are not welcome. Entry is by gold coin donation with funds raised going towards the School Association projects to improve our school. Session times are: Kinder – 2 4.00pm – 5.30pm and Grade 3 – 6 5.45pm – 7.30pm. Students must be accompanied by a parent to and from the hall.
Changes to Reporting to Parents
Last year DoE reviewed the Reporting to Parents Policy and Guidelines to help make reports as meaningful and informative for parents as possible. Next year the A – E ratings will be replaced with a nine-point scale, which will provide more information about student capability. Written comments will no longer be provided, but there will be opportunities for formal parent / teacher conversations in terms 2 and 3. Parents can continue to contact their child’s teacher at any time to ask questions or talk about matters of concern.
Planning for 2022
We are currently working towards our plans for next year in many areas including class structures, staffing and teaching and learning priorities. We are keen to hear from families in our school zone whose children will be attending next year. Please ask any friends, neighbours or family members to contact us as soon as possible.
Transition for Next Year
Later this term a range of transition events will be held to help prepare students and families for a successful start to the 2022 school year. These meetings are particularly for kindergarten children and students moving into grade 7. During the last few days of the year we will also provide opportunities for all students to meet their teacher for next year.
Presentation Assembly for Grade 6
Later in the year our annual Presentation Assembly will be held for grade six students. With Covid compliance requirements to consider, we will not be inviting special guests, representatives from DoE or from other schools so that as many parents and family members can attend as possible. An online booking system has been established and distributed by our office team, with booking now invited for up to three family members for each student. Please contact the office if you need help with the online booking format.
During assemblies for the rest of this term we will be focusing on skills for speaking in public and using the microphone. You may notice some students are just learning these skills and they may need to start their message again if the audience cannot hear.
