From the Principal…..
Last weekend I was very pleased to attend one of the Bicentenary celebrations for Perth at Adams Distillery. Two groups of students presented to the audience on a freezing Saturday evening. Congratulations to Scarlet, Indy, Laila, Victor, Harry, Bree and Payton for your confident and professional presentation of Acknowledgement of Country and a historic timeline of significant events at Perth. Many thanks to parents involved who supported our students’ involvement and to Karen Dick for her assistance and preparation.
Reporting to Parents 2021
During the weekend I spent time reading the reports of all students at our school. Reports will be sent home to families at the end of next week. This forms part of our partnership with all families as we work together to best support student learning and success. The reporting format remains unchanged this year but may be different in 2022 after a review into the reporting to parents policy.
Reports will include ratings to show learning achievement against A – E scale in English, mathematics and science for students from grades 1 – 6. Personalised comments are included for all students. Ratings against A – E curriculum for prep students are included in reports at the end of the year. Students in kindergarten are supported in their learning with parent / teacher conversations relating to the KDC at mid-year and a celebration of learning compiled for the end of year reporting against the five elements of the Early Years Framework.
What Do Ratings Mean?
Students are assessed against the expectations and progressions of the Australian Curriculum. Each rating is described below:
A |
Well above the standard described |
B |
Above the standard described |
C |
Students have mastered rigorous and challenging material at the standard described in the curriculum for their age and grade. This is a very pleasing result. |
D |
Approaching the standard described |
E |
Below the standard. |
Parent Teacher Conversations 2021
Parent Teacher Conversations will commence on the 21st June 2021. This year the Schoolzine App will be used for bookings. This will be available to parents/guardians from June 14th at 3pm and a notification will be sent to advise bookings are now available. Please notify the office if you have any queries in regards to the app or how to proceed with making a booking.
Assistant Principal
Last week we farewelled Jenny Clements who has moved to a Lead Quality Teaching Coach position to support the work of teachers and schools across northern Tas. We wish Jenny all the best in her new role in helping to support student learning growth in northern schools. We will certainly miss her commitment, dedication and expertise across our school.
I am very pleased to announce that Kate Adams will be Acting Assistant Principal. Kate has been appointed until the end of the year. She knows our school community very well and has a wide range of skills and expertise which will allow us to continue our improvement in line with our School Improvement Plan. Congratulations to Kate on her new appointment.
Further news about Kate’s replacement as Acting AST will be shared once details of the appointment are finalised.
Student Safety – Ditto Show
Student safety is a key priority. To support our work to build key understandings for students we will host the Ditto Show next week. Ditto will share many messages about personal safety for children K – 2. Please contact me if you have further questions about this. Parents are able to attend the show which is scheduled for 1.45pm on Tuesday next week.
Bags from RAW – Rural Alive and Well
We have a collection of re-usable bags which were donated to us by RAW. They are good for all sorts of uses – in school bags, cars, for shopping. Possibilities are endless. Please collect yours from your child’s teacher.
Milo for 5/6 Camp
Please leave your name at the office if you are able to assist with this important fundraiser. Money raised by selling warm Milo to students this term and next goes towards reducing the cost of our camp for all families.
Your support either as a volunteer and in supporting the Milo fundraiser is much appreciated.

Our healthy menu for Term 2 includes:
Speech and Language Talk Time
ACTIVITY
Talk Time - The link between language and literacy
Oral language skills form the basis of literacy and academic learning and success. A strong oral language development can help prepare children for reading and writing in a number of ways:
- Developing concepts. Children grow an understanding of the meanings of words and how they are pronounced.
- The structure of language. Children learn how to put together sentences that make sense and communicate meaning.
- Awareness of cultural nuances. Children learn background information and knowledge that assists in reading comprehension.
- Oral language development builds a desire to use language for a variety of purposes including reading, writing and listening.
Oral language, also known as spoken language, one of four areas of language. The other language areas include listening, reading and writing. All four areas of language are related and effect one another in their development. A solid foundation in oral language helps children become successful readers, communicator, as well as increasing their confidence and well-being.
Activity
Two of a Kind
For this game, you will say three words. Two of them should rhyme. Your child will listen for the rhyming pair and call it out. For example, "rail, seat, sail — which two rhyme? Yes, 'rail' and 'sail' rhyme. They both have the same sound at the end."
Try this activity during your next car ride or while walking to school. Your child will be a wiz at identifying and generating rhymes in no time at all.
