From the Principal…..
Last week I was incredibly proud to watch almost every student at our school complete the cross country course with enthusiasm, determination and grit. Students in House groups showed amazing levels of support, encouragement and appreciation for the efforts of all competitors. There were loud cheers and chants for all runners, whether they were winning or persevering to finish the course well behind other runners. The high-level character qualities shown by PPS students was heart-warming and made for a great cross country carnival. Congratulations to our students finishing in the top five in each grade. They will represent PPS in the Northern Midlands Cross Country in several weeks. Team members for the NM Cross Country Carnival have received further details today.
STAFFING UPDATE
Congratulations to our A/P Jenny Clements who has been successful in gaining a position as Lead Quality Teaching Coach Literacy. Jenny will be finishing at PPS on Friday 4th June. We wish Jenny well as she moves to this important position working with teachers and school leaders across the north of Tas. We will certainly miss Jenny’s expertise, professionalism, hard work, care and support. I know all members of our school community will join with me in congratulating Jenny on her new position and thanking her for her huge contribution to PPS in her five years at our school. Students, staff and parents will certainly miss her. Jenny’s replacement as Assistant Principal will be announced in several weeks.
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN testing window in all schools in Australia closed on Friday with all PPS students eligible for NAPLAN completing all tests. Students were keen to do their best and showed high-level character qualities including perseverance and courage in working their way through questions, prompts and problems. Congratulations to everyone who completed work under test conditions and special congratulations to Kate Adams who filled the role of NAPLAN co-ordinator for us. We worked our way through NAPLAN in a seamless manner thanks to Mrs Adams’ careful and high-level organisation.
ROAD SAFETY IN FAIRTLOUGH STREET
Last year we started some investigations about safety at pick-up time at the front of the school. A traffic engineer visited several times. We will continue to explore options for a safe crossing at the front of the school. Parents are asked not to call children across the road between cars. Please come to the school side of the street to meet your children and walk to the car together. Children are not allowed to walk through the carpark unless accompanied by a responsible adult. Keeping children safe is our joint responsibility and we appreciate your support.
MILO FOR CAMP FUNDRAISING
One of the traditions at our school is fundraising to support all families equally with the cost of grade 5 / 6 camp. 2021 is a camp year and bookings have been made for Hobart and Tasman Peninsula in Term 4. In the past, parents of grade 5 / 6 students have co-ordinated fundraising efforts. Parent volunteers are required to assist with making warm MILO in Terms 2 and 3, and milkshakes in Terms 1 and 4. Please contact the school office or a member of the School Association if you are able to help. A roster of parent helpers means we have spaces weekly, fortnightly and monthly. Many helpers mean the burden is spread more widely. Thank you for your assistance in ensuring this fundraiser can continue to support all PPS families.
ASPIRING PRINCIPAL VISIT
We are very pleased to be hosting a visit from Daisy Stephens on 1st and 2nd June. Daisy is Assistant Principal at CDHS and is undertaking a program for aspiring principals called Principal Preparation. As part of this program she will be shadowing me to gain a broader on-the-ground understanding of the principal role.
We are privileged to be able to share our school culture and practices with teachers who are aspiring to become our next generation of leaders.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AT PERTH PRIMARY SCHOOL
Every week our staff are involved in high-level professional learning with staff building skills and knowledge to achieve our priorities and goals. Our key vision is to promote MORE learning for MORE students for MORE of the time. Priorities listed in our School Improvement Plan this year are: quality teaching for learning, writing and wellbeing. On Friday this week members of the leadership team will continue their learning about Data Wise to help support professional growth and student learning in all priority areas.
REPORTING TO PARENTS AND PARENT/TEACHER CONVERSATIONS
Teachers are working hard to finalise mid-year assessments so that report ratings can be added to mid-year reports. Written reports will go home to all families on Friday 18th June. This will be followed by an opportunity for parents and teachers to talk together about their child’s progress. Booking details for meetings will be shared soon. Meetings with teachers will be available Monday 21st June – Friday 25th June.
Move Well Eat Well
PPS is a member school and award winner for this program which reminds us about a wide range of healthy practices. Move Well Eat Well reminds us to eat a healthy diet, drink water only, enjoy a range of physical activity and always gain a good night’s sleep. Further information about healthy habits for families can be found at: | Move Well Eat Well (dhhs.tas.gov.au)
Covid 19 Update
AEDC Data Collection
The Australian Early Development Census is a national survey which provides information about how children in their first full year of school are developing. The data is used to inform policies and direct actions and resources. This survey is open 3rd May to 2nd July and started this week. Parents of prep children involved have been provided with further information.
Spotlight on PPS Students
Spotlight on PPS Students is a new section in our newsletter which will share and celebrate the many skills, qualities and achievements of our students. This section relies on contributions from parents. Parents are invited to share details about your child’s achievements. Please send full details, including a photo to: perth.primary@education.tas.gov.au
Student snapshots will be shared in order of receipt. Achievements in any domain are certainly worthy of sharing. These might include: volunteering/community contributions/achievements in Art, Music, Sports and character qualities such as perseverance and assisting others.

Families and school community members are invited to contribute to the review. This is an important opportunity and we encourage you to visit the website and have your say in what your child learns.
