From the Principal…..
This week we send all mothers in our school community a special message of respect and gratitude for the very important role you play. We hope that everyone has enjoyed a wonderful Mothers’ Day filled with special family times. Many thanks to members of our School Association who hosted the Mothers’ Day stall last week so that all children could go shopping for a special gift for mum. This is a major undertaking and provides an important opportunity for students to choose and pay for gifts by themselves. Many thanks also to our School Association volunteers and to all school families who made donations so that the stall was a success. Funds raised total: $900
NAPLAN
This week NAPLAN Online returned for children in grades 3 and 5, along with all students across Australia in grades 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN assesses student progress in reading, writing, conventions of language, spelling and numeracy. This helps teachers to plan for what students need to learn next. You can help your child to prepare for NAPLAN and all other assessments by ensuring they get plenty of sleep, eat healthy meals and enjoy plenty of time for exercise so that they can do their best. Feelings of worry and being nervous around testing time are normal and almost everyone experiences these. Learning to manage and control these feelings is part of developing healthy mental wellbeing.
If you have further questions please contact Mrs Adams or Mrs Craw.
Cross Country Carnival Update
Next week all students will participate in our Cross Country carnival on Thursday 20th May. Kinder students will run the course on Thursday from 10.30am while 3 – 6 students will begin events at 11.30am. Events for P – 2 students will start at 1.30pm.
Physical activity is an important feature of our culture at PPS. This term all students are participating in a running challenge of equivalent distance to the height of Ben Lomond. The total laps for each class are also collated, with the goal of reaching the top of Mt Everest. Chat with your child about how many laps they manage each day. Daily PE begin at 8.45am Tuesday – Friday.
Move Well Eat Well
PPS is a member school and award winner for this program which reminds us about a wide range of healthy practices. Move Well Eat Well reminds us to eat a healthy diet, drink water only, enjoy a range of physical activity and always gain a good night’s sleep. Further information about healthy habits for families can be found at: | Move Well Eat Well (dhhs.tas.gov.au)

Walk Safely to School Day
This Friday 14th May is National Walk Safely to School Day. Our Student Cabinet members will be standing at each of the entrances to our school to provide stickers for all children who walk at least 500m to school. Please think about dropping your child at the end of the block for them to walk the rest of the way. Walking and talking with others is an excellent way to start the school day in a positive way. Staff members will be leaving each of the following locations at 8:15am promptly to provide a ‘walking bus’ on this day.
A – Norfolk & Frederick Street
B – Honey Factory
C – Arthur Street
Thank you to our Volunteers
Next week is National Volunteers Week with celebrations around the country from 17th – 23rd May. During this time, we recognise and celebrate the contributions of volunteers to our school, as well as the value they add to many other organisations. To acknowledge the importance of volunteers to our school community, we invite our regular volunteers to join with our staff at a special morning tea to be held on Tuesday 18th May, starting from 10.45am. Please RSVP to the office if you are able to join us.
Covid 19 Update
AEDC Data Collection
The Australian Early Development Census is a national survey which provides information about how children in their first full year of school are developing. The data is used to inform policies and direct actions and resources. This survey is open 3rd May to 2nd July and will take place starting next week. Parents of prep children involved have been provided with further information.
Certificates in Assemblies
This year teachers have been acknowledging and congratulating students in assembly with certificates which recognise a wide range of successes and efforts. During most assemblies, teachers present their two certificates to students most worthy depending on their effort, focus and progress. End of term assemblies recognise students who excel in each of the values – Respect, Courage, Aspiration, Growth and Creativity. Term 2 end of term certificate recipients will also receive a $2 voucher from our canteen.
Daily Physical Education
We know that physical exercise and activity is important for children and for us all. Our DPE program for this term will begin at 8.45am on Thursday. DPE will be held Tuesday – Friday each week. This term children will be involved in a personal and class challenge to reach the heights of both Ben Lomond and Mount Everest by running/walking laps around a marked course. Thanks to Mel Fleming for her work on this DPE challenge.
Welcomes and Farewells
This week we welcome Harry, Zeke and their family to our school. Zeke joins 3 / 4 JL while Harry is a member of Prep/1 Wi.
We hope your association with our school is a happy and successful one.

Australian Curriculum
The Australian Curriculum - Have a say in what your child learns.
All students from Prep to Year 10 in Tasmanian schools are taught the Australian Curriculum.
The Curriculum is currently being reviewed and refined to ensure that it continues to be world class and best meet the needs of our students in our changing world.
Families and school community members are invited to contribute to the review. This is an important opportunity and we encourage you to visit the website and have your say in what your child learns.
The website is open from 29 April – 8 July.

Speech and Language Talk Time
ACTIVITY
Talk Time
Books, Books, Books!
There are a variety of benefits to reading with children of all ages for their language and general development. Reading with children allows for authentic, engaging, and language-filled interactions. So, why do people keep going on about reading books?
Books allow children to experience new words because they often include unfamiliar words. In books they repeat the same word in a variety of ways, helping children to understand the meaning and learn new vocabulary. Having a story read to them, allows children to hear the correct pronunciation of unfamiliar words and how to use them in an appropriate way.
Children learn best when adults are responsive to them. Books promote responsiveness because it’s easy for adults and children to be focused on the same thing when you are telling a story or looking at a book together. When you read a book with your child, abandon your agenda. Let your child lead, and talk about what it is that interests them.
When children are read to, they are supported to learn new words and grammar together. Hearing words in grammatically correct sentences helps children to learn language in a natural and efficient way.
On top of all this, children are able to use books to hear about new ideas, places, people and cultures
build their imagination, creativity and story-telling skills. In relation to their literacy development, children learn about how texts work and varying ways we can use texts and language to communicate.
There is no magic number as to how much or how often to read to or with your child. The more the better! See what book sharing time you can add in this week.
ACTIVITY
Find a book and share it with your child.
It might be one with no words and you can talk about what is happening in the pictures. Maybe together you can make up your own story. It could even be a silly one! It’s okay if it’s different to the real story.
