All Schools Cross Country – Symons Plains

From the Principal…..

Welcome back to all members of our school community. As I’ve visited classrooms recently I’ve noticed all students have returned after the break with a clear focus and commitment to their learning. Our task as a school is to strive for MORE learning for MORE students for MORE time. With this in mind, it’s important that all children arrive at school ready to learn, play happily and get along well with others so that we make clear progress in our priority areas.

Changes in Office

Last term I advised that Jo Carr was moving into another position within DoE. We thank Jo for her work at PPS and wish her well for the future. We are delighted to announce that our new admin clerk, appointed for this term, is Ms Mandy Doyle. Mandy has experience in a range of other schools and educational settings and brings expertise in working with DOE programs. Please call at the office and introduce yourself to Mandy. Our office team for this term will be Mandy and Tina, both working Mon – Fri. They are both ready and able to assist with your questions and enquiries.

Anzac Commemorations

On Sunday members of our school community marched in the traditional ANZAC parade down the main street of Perth. Many thanks to Andrea Shephard for walking with our students on this special day. This year our ANZAC commemoration was held in our whole-school assembly which featured messages about ANZAC Day and provided an opportunity for classes to share their learning about this special day.

The values promoted on this important occasion are clearly represented in our school values as we list resilience, courage and respect amongst our key priorities. Experience and research clearly show that high levels of physical, social and emotional wellbeing are very important for success at school and in later life.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing will happen for all students Australia-wide starting in week 4. NAPLAN tests students knowledge and skills in five different domains – reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy. Results will be provided to parents later in the year. NAPLAN also provides important information at a school level and helps us to identify areas for further professional learning. Please talk with me or with your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about NAPLAN.

SCHOOL VEGETABLE GARDEN

Recently several very keen helpers have been working in our school garden with the help of groundsman, Steve Muir. Students have weeded, tidied and replanted seedlings. We are most appreciative of the generous support of Bunnings North Launceston for their help in supplying seedlings and mulch.

Covid 19 Update

All parents and visitors to schools are now required to use the Check in Tas App when they visit school sites for events. This includes school events such as carnivals, assemblies and parent/teacher conversations which will be held at the end of this term. Please download the Check In Tas App from your app store. This app is also required for all other venues in Tasmania. Visitors and parents are still required to sign-in via the kiosk in the office if they are onsite at other times. Examples might include individual arrangements such as volunteering in your child’s classroom or a meeting between you and other school staff. Thank you for your co-operation in keeping all members of our school community safe.

In line with Covid protocols, parents are reminded that only commercially produced and individually wrapped foods can be shared with students at school, unless foods are prepared on school site under Covid-safe protocols. This means cupcakes and birthday cakes are still not allowed.

School Association News

Last month the AGM for our School Association was held. New committee contact details will be shared soon. Last year we celebrated the contributions of several School Association members for their long and generous contributions to our school community as their children moved to secondary school. Thank you again to Mel Lucas and Jacqui Dalton for your years of commitment to PPS. Congratulations and thank you to parents who volunteer their time to assist our school.

Last month the School Association started their fundraising efforts by co-ordinating orders for Easter buns. We hope you enjoyed yours! Next week the SA will hold an Election Day BBQ. Covid protocols prohibit any school or association from holding cake stalls. The funds from this BBQ fundraiser will go towards reducing the costs for our biannual camp for students in grade 5/6 . This year’s camp will be held in November and will visit Hobart and Tasman Peninsula.

Further fundraising to help reduce camp costs will begin again once volunteers can be found to help with making and selling warm Milo. This tradition started at PPS some years ago and has raised a significant amount towards camp costs each time. The total raised is divided equally between all children attending. Milkshakes are available for sale in terms 1 and 4, and warm Milo is sold from the canteen in terms 2 and 3. Further details about the start date for Milo will be provided once volunteers have been confirmed.

AEDC Data Collection

The Australian Early Development Census is a national survey which provides information about how children in their first full year of school are developing. The data is used to inform policies and direct actions and resources. This survey is open 3rd May to 2nd July and will take place starting next week. Parents of Prep children involved will be provided with further information.

Certificates in Assemblies

This year teachers have been acknowledging and congratulating students in assembly with certificates which recognise a wide range of successes and efforts. During most assemblies, teachers present their two certificates to students most worthy depending on their effort, focus and progress. End of term assemblies recognise students who excel in each of the values – Respect, Courage, Aspiration, Growth and Creativity. Term 2 end of term certificate recipients will also receive a $2 voucher from our canteen.

Daily Physical Education

We know that physical exercise and activity is important for children and for us all. Our DPE program for this term will begin at 8.45am on Thursday. DPE will be held Tuesday – Friday each week. This term children will be involved in a personal and class challenge to reach the heights of both Ben Lomond and Mount Everest by running/walking laps around a marked course. Thanks to Mel Fleming for her work on this DPE challenge.

Welcomes and Farewells

This week we welcome our new social worker, Cindy Calvert. Cindy replaces Steven Wright who has moved to another position in DoE. We look forward to Cindy’s support of students and our school community.

We also welcome several new students and their families. Welcome to Hugh – Grade 4 / 5, Oscar and Alyas who have joined Prep / 1 Wr, and Kiara Fisher – Kinder W. We hope your time with us at PPS is happy and successful.

Farewell to Annabelle and Alex and their family as you relocate to Echuca, Victoria. Best wishes for the future.

Speech and Language Talk Time

ACTIVITY

Talk Time

Speech Sound Development

Speech or articulation refers to how a person makes sounds and the way they sequence sounds to form words. It is the ability to use the lips, tongue and other parts of your mouth to produce sounds. Just like developing language, learning all the speech sounds is a developmental process that takes children many years to master. In general, as speech sounds develop children:

  • At 1 year of age will be understood 25% of the time
  • At 2 years of age will be understood 50% of the time by people that don’t know them
  • At 3 years of age will be understood 75% of the time by people that don’t know them
  • At 4 years of age will be understood 100% of the time by people that don’t know them
  • At 8 years of age will be using all speech sounds in the correct places in words.

This diagram shows when most children will be able to produce the sound on its own. What is important to remember is that there are patterns in speech that are considered typical in development until past these age markers and beyond the age of 6. For example, you might know your child is 5 and is starting to say an ‘r’ sound when they think about it or when they are pretending to growl but are still saying “gween” for ‘green’ or “wain” rather than “rain”. This is still an age appropriate speech pattern in development.

When your child makes an error in their speech you can model the correct speech production back to them in a subtle way so they hear an example. For example;

Child: Can I go on the swide?
Adult: Yes, you can play on the SLIDE.

If you have concerns or your child is having trouble being understood by others, it may be worth discussing with their classroom teacher.

Activity

Talking about sounds

Bring a child attention and focus onto their speech sounds by talking specifically about the speech sounds.

  • Is it a long sound like ‘mmm’? or is it a short sound like ‘tt’?
  • Is it a sound made at the front of your mouth like ‘fff’ or a sound made at the back of your mouth like ‘ggg’?
  • Is it a quiet sound like ‘sss’? or a noisy sound like ‘zzz’? It can help to put your hand gently on your neck, by your Adam’s apple, if it feels buzzy your vocal cords are working and you are making a noisy sound!
  • Do you use your lips like ‘bbb’ or use your tongue like ‘lll’ or just use air like in ‘hhh?
