From the Principal…..
Thank you to the many parents and family members who joined us for a highly successful day for our athletics carnival. This year the event was hosted at school and the feedback and comments about this event on our beautiful environment have been overwhelming. Children, staff and spectators all enjoyed the day in our grounds. It was rewarding to see such high levels of sporting behaviours, participation, support for others and everyone showing YES behaviours on the day. These are the qualities for which our students have become known. The Baker Bear was proudly received by House Captains Emma and Bodie representing Hirst. The Baker Bear is presented to the House receiving the most points for sporting attitudes, support for others, cheering and participation. Congratulations to Hirst!
NAPLAN
NAPLAN testing for grades 3 and 5 students across Australia will be held this year starting on 11th May. This is week 3 of Term 2. With testing running across weeks 3 & 4, NAPLAN involves a series of tests in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy. NAPLAN provides useful information about teaching and learning at Perth Primary School and what we need to teach next to best support student learning. Reports for each child will be available to parents later in the year. Please talk with your child’s teacher or with me at school if you have questions or comments about this testing.
Noella MacKenzie
We are delighted to be hosting an information session for parents with Noella MacKenzie tomorrow, starting at 9.30am. Please contact the office if you haven’t yet put your name on the list. Noella will talk about the important partnership between parents and school in helping young children to develop literacy skills. Hands-on ideas will be shared so that you can help your child with their learning.
Changes in Office
Last week we farewelled Jo Carr as she moved to a new position at Learning Services. Our office team will be quite different for the next few weeks as Leanne Dunn takes leave. We are sending our love and support to Leanne and her family at this difficult time. Tina Todman and Bronwyn Carroll will be available to assist parents with any queries.
NMPSSA Athletics Carnival
On Monday this week a large team of representatives competed in the NMPSSA athletics carnival at St Leonards. As always, our students were outstanding representatives of our school and certainly did their best.
Wellbeing – a key priority
Last week I attended the Tasmanian Principals’ Association Conference in Hobart. I worked with many other principals as we heard from a range of acclaimed speakers who talked about the importance of wellbeing so that everyone can achieve their best. Wellbeing is a key priority in our school improvement plan as we strive to improve the wellbeing of all members of our community.
Preliminary Progress Reports
On Friday last week PPRs were sent home to share information about the organisational skills and learning qualities that children bring to their work in class. Together with thinking and learning, these character and study qualities are critical in the success of every child. Please talk with your child’s teacher if you have questions about the report received. DoE is currently working on a new reporting format following the review into reporting to parents last year. The next report will be shared with parents at the end of Term 2.
Welcomes and Farewells
This week we farewelled Jo Carr as she moved to an acting position in Learning Services North. We thank Jo for her excellent work as part of our team at PPS and wish her all the best for the future.
New Perth Child Care Centre
Plans have now been released for the proposed Perth Child Care Centre to be built adjacent to the kindergarten in Fore Street. The new centre will be purpose-built and will cater for many more children than the current centre can manage. This is exciting news for the Perth community as childcare placements have been difficult to find for many years. Further details are available through the Development Applications tab on the Northern Midlands Council website.
ANZAC Parade
Students are invited to march in this annual parade to show their respect and appreciation for our Armed Services personnel. ANZAC Day falls on the first Sunday of Term 2. A permission note with further details will be available for children to collect from the office from next Monday.
Parents attending Assembly
Please remember to RSVP for assemblies so that we can meet our COVID density requirements. Parents of host classes, certificate recipients, and other award/presentations are able to attend.

Plastic Free/Recycle
In our canteen we are trying our best to be as Plastic Free and recycle as much as possible.
- We don’t use any plastic wrap anymore at all, we place our pre made toasted sandwiches into large Sistema tubs before they are toasted
- We use metal spoons for our frozen yoghurt
- We use block cheese which we slice and grate which are placed in Sistema containers
- We use reusable bowls for our popcorn and cheese and biscuits
- Any items that can or need to be frozen (Ham, Chicken, Pineapple or Baked Beans) we freeze in Sistema reusable containers
- Our Cheese and Biscuits and Popcorn are sold in reusable bowls which are returned to the canteen
- We wash and dry yoghurt containers and lids to recycle
- We only use paper bags for our lunch orders
- We use a piece of foil to cover our pizza muffins before placing into a paper bag
- We place 4 Black Tubs in our eating areas so all our return items, bowls, spoons, yoghurt containers. They are returned after lunch to the canteen washed and put in appropriate places
- We have 4 Soft Plastic Bins around the eating areas, only soft plastic is placed in these bins. Our Waste Warriors empty the bins on Wednesdays and the soft plastic it taken to the appropriate deposit areas, Coles or Woolworths. The bins are washed and placed back in the playground eating areas
- We recycle everything that are one use items in the correct way
- We also compost our food waste in the school compost area
- We only offer wholemeal bread, rolls and wraps also wholemeal fruit loaf when available
Prep/1 D
On Monday 15th March our Prep/One classes had a visit from Seahorse World as part of our Science Inquiry. During the visit we learnt about the 5 needs of living things, food, shelter, protection, reproduction, and oxygen. We saw selections of seahorses and sea dragons and learnt about their mysterious behaviour. Everyone had a hold of a seahorse and some of us were even brave enough to hold a hermit crab!

Speech and Language Talk Time
What is language?
Language refers to the words and sentences we have and how we understand and use them to share ideas and get what we want. Language can refer to spoken or written communication. Language includes:
- Listening skills – Being able to understand what is being said including following directions and comprehension.
- Grammar – Being able to use the correct grammar in the right place to form complete sentences.
- Vocabulary – Having a knowledge of what things are called and an ability to understand those words when they are spoken as well as to think of and say the words when needed.
- Questions – Being able to answer and ask questions with a variety of structures.
- Social Language (Pragmatics) – Being able to use language to interact with others and follow social rules of conversation and play.
- Literacy/Phonological Awareness – Being able to read and write or use pre-reading skills such as syllable counting, rhyming and identifying sounds in words.
ACTIVITY
Play with language in games! Try playing ‘I Spy’ with our without letter/sounds as the clue – You could give the clue as categories (a living thing, a vehicle), attributes (like colour or size) or anything that gets you and your child thinking about different ways we describe the world around us and uses a variety of vocabulary.
