Our Caring Community
Last week saw a very clear sign of the care, support and concern our community has for others. We launched a collection called Fundraising for Our Friends which was very well supported by families at PPS to show our care and offer some help to a PPS family involved in last week’s fire at Adams Distillery. While respecting the family’s privacy, news points to the slow but steady progress made by the man badly injured in the fire.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the amazing total of $1109.60 in money raised.

Welcome BBQ
It was delightful to welcome many parents and families to our annual Welcome BBQ last Thursday. Congratulations to our School Association for hosting this highly successful event. Many parents and children attended, with everyone enjoying the time, BBQ foods and opportunities to mix and talk with others in our beautiful grounds bathed in sunshine. Look out for other opportunities to meet new families and mix with other parents if you weren’t able to attend this time.
Bicentenary Event
This week we are holding the first in a series of events during 2021 to celebrate the Bicentenary of Perth. Perth was named as a township by Governor Macquarie in 1821.
On Thursday, 25th February, we are hosting a Bicentenary picnic featuring costume parade, period games and activities and traditional foods. Parents and community members are invited to attend for part of this special day.
Children will enjoy an apple for morning tea when they re-enter the school grounds following the costume parade around the streets of Perth. Traditional biscuits and sausages have been available for pre-order.
Parents and members of the Perth community are welcome to participate by either joining in the games and activities and/or watching the costume parade. Covid protocols will apply at school entrances.

Data Wise
Last year we were successful in joining a statewide Data Wise inquiry project to support our school improvement plans. Last week Kate Adams, Jenny Clements and I travelled to Hobart to continue our learning about the Data Wise process and how this can support teaching and learning at Perth. Our priority on writing continues this year as we focus on supporting students as they develop writing expertise. creativity and fluency.
School Association
Our School Association plays an important role in the life of PPS, particularly in supporting our priorities, fundraising and events. Elections for members of our School Association were advertised in our last newsletter in line with the Perth Primary School Association constitution. Nominations for the three vacant positions were advertised. Please contact the office or speak with a current member if you have questions or inquiries about this process.
Childcare News
We are very excited to report information about a new childcare centre which will be built behind the kindergarten later this year with the assistance of grants from the State and Federal governments. Northern Midlands Council owns the land and will own the building. This is very exciting news for the Perth community as the new centre will be a purpose-built facility with increased capacity and dedicated areas for long daycare as well as OSHC (after school care). The new centre will also cater for more children to accommodate the growing demand for childcare in the Perth region. Please contact the Director of Childcare Kate Lee if you have further questions.
Student Leadership
One of the key features of PPS are the many opportunities for student leadership available so that children can develop the sense of responsibility, initiative and accountability which will serve them well in the future. Congratulations to House Captains and members of the Student Cabinet who were elected by their peers last week. We look forward to their work and contributions to help make our school the best one possible. The next step for student leaders is to sign the Code of Conduct in front of parents before receiving their badges at our week 6 assembly. Further details about the agreement signing ceremony will be available for parents involved.
National Anthem
You are probably aware of the change to the words of the National Anthem which received widespread coverage in the press during the summer. We sing the National Anthem at each assembly so it is important that children know and understand the revised words. Please help your child to learn both the verses of the National Anthem which you can find at the following link:
https://pmc.gov.au/sites/default/files/files/national-anthem-2021-words-sheet.pdf
Noella Mackenzie
Last newsletter we shared news of an exciting opportunity for parents to learn from Noella Mackenzie, a current and acclaimed researcher in early literacy development.
Noella will lead a parent session 9.30 – 11am at PPS on Thursday 25th March. There are still some parent places available. Please contact us for further details or leave your name at the office if you are able to attend so that you can share in the partnership of your child’s literacy learning.

Perth Primary School Support Staff
Hello! My name is Maddi and I am a speech and language pathologist who works in schools across the northern region of Tasmania. I’m originally from Queensland but have survived three Tasmanian winters! I’m an animal lover and in my spare time I like getting into the garden or getting out and out and exploring the beautiful places Tassie has to offer. I’m excited to jump into this year and get to know everyone in the Perth community a little bit better.
This will be my second year as the speech pathologist working at Perth Primary School. As a speech pathologist I have worked with a variety of people from toddlers all the way up to the elderly, as well as everyone in between. I appreciate the variety my position provides because every day is different and I get to work with so many amazing people.
Talk Time
What is a speech pathologist?
Speech Pathologists assess, diagnose and treat communication disorders. These can include difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding or using language, stuttering and vocal quality. They work with people who have difficulties communicating for a variety of reasons, such as developmental delays, learning disabilities, hearing loss, brain injuries, cerebral palsy, as well as many other problems that can affect a person’s communication. People who experience difficulties swallowing food and drink safely can also be helped by a speech pathologist. Keep an eye out for ‘Talk Time’ in the school newsletter for some tips and tricks about all things speech pathology.

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
- Online
Visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. - In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day is Thursday.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2021 School Banking program parent guide from the school office or visit the link below:

Costumes for the Bicentenary Picnic
As the Bicentenary 2021 celebrates 200 years since Perth was named it was thought a simple way to be inclusive with the costuming was to highlight costumes in 100 year blocks.
1821 - |
Your best resource will be the internet. Just type in children’s clothing of the 1830’s. There are some simple line drawings that would be easy to copy. There is also a little series on ABC iview called ‘Convict Kids’ which illustrates convict clothing. Be wary of using the term ‘Colonial’ in the search engine because it will throw up American Colonial which is a little different to Australian colonial |
1921 - |
Search ‘Children’s clothing of the 1920’s. Pintrest has a wealth of pictures and ideas’ |
2021 - |
This is the easiest one of all. |
I am happy to help with ideas and patterns and sewing advice.
If there are any people with sewing skills who are happy to help others please let me know and I can pass on that information.
I would suggest the holidays are a good time to start gathering ideas and materials and making or assembling costumes as the picnic will be early in the the first term and life can get fairly hectic around this time.
Please email or text me in the first instance.
