From the Principal…..

Welcome to the 2021 school year! It was delightful to welcome children and families back to school last week and such a pleasure to visit classes to see all children rested and ready for the year ahead. Our constant messages to students are around their responsibilities in arriving at school ready for focused learning, happy playing and getting along well with others. This was clearly evident last week and we are excited about our year ahead with many plans in place.

FRIENDS Supporting FRIENDS

Plans are developing for fundraising efforts to support a local PPS family involved in yesterday’s fire at Adams Distillery. Our efforts will begin with a free-dress day on Friday this week.

We know the PPS community is most generous in supporting worthy causes. Funds raised will go directly to support the family from our own PPS community.

Your generosity is much appreciated.

Covid Protocols - Feb 2021

Currently we are able to welcome parents and other adults onsite for brief visits and to drop off and collect children. Parents are welcome onto the school grounds for visits of 10min or less at the beginning and end of the day. Covid protocols and sign-in procedures apply for any longer visits.

Regular visits and longer stays require the usual sign-in procedures entered electronically at the office on our newly installed Kiosk Administration system. A current WWVP registration and visitor sticker are required when onsite during school hours.

Assemblies and other larger general events require either electronic or paper-copy sign-in for Covid tracing purposes. Paper-copy tracing has been replaced with the Check In Tas QR code which is specific to our school. Please down-load the App so that you are ready to check in for all school events including assembly, BBQ, Bicentenary Picnic and carnivals etc. Details only need to be entered on the first occasion. Please show the completed check-in screen as you enter the hall/event.

Details for downloading the App can be found at:

Celebrating Perth’s Bicentenary

This year marks 200 years since the naming of Perth and many public events are planned to celebrate this important milestone. Late last year students were involved in studying the history of Perth and this will be an ongoing focus. A whole-school inquiry called “What makes Perth special to me” is planned. To celebrate the Bicentenary we have organised a day of celebration with period costumes and traditional activities. Parents and community members will be invited to watch part of the occasion, with the following plans in place:

9.15am - 10am - Parade around the streets of Perth near the school
10.15am - 10.45am - Traditional games on the oval. Parents invited to join in with their child

Covid protocols and scan in using the Check In Tas app will be in place. Please mark this date in your calendar so that you can join us for the fun!

Move Well Eat Well

We are registered as a Move Well Eat Well school and have implemented many of the program’s recommendations. This includes a high level of activity for students and strongly encouraging healthy foods and treats. Minimising single use plastics and water only are also principles of the MWEW program so that we are keeping ourselves and our environment healthy. Nurse Bec will be inviting parents to attend an information session for parents of kindergarten children about Kindergarten Health Checks and some of the wellbeing topics that your child will be learning. This session is planned for Monday 1st March at 2pm.

Eat / Calm / Chat

Our supervised eating times have been slightly adjusted this year to support active and social play as well as calm, focused learning in classrooms. Thank you to the parents who responded to the survey about this matter last year.

Parent learning sessions by Noella Mackenzie

Helping your child thrive in literacy – A parent session with Noella Mackenzie

We are delighted to invite parents to a session to share ways to help children flourish with their literacy learning. Noella Mackenzie is a Professor in Education at Charles Sturt University in SA. She is deeply involved in quality teaching and learning in literacy.

Noella will visit some classrooms and speak with parents about the importance of drawing, talking and writing in supporting children to develop strong reading and literacy skills. This interactive session will explore learning before starting school, school/family partnerships and building on what children already know.

We hope you can join us on Thursday 25th March, 9.30-11. Please RSVP to the office as soon as possible as spaces are limited.

Looking forward to seeing many parents there to learn about the ways you can help your child to be a successful literacy learner.

WWVP Cards

Many parents in our school community already have their WWVP Card so that they can assist in classrooms as regular helpers or volunteer to come along on excursions. This is a DoE requirement for all parents in all schools. The process takes about 3 weeks and attracts a minimal cost once you have completed the process through the Department of Justice website online. Please talk to the office staff for further information if you need advice about their process.

Welcomes

Welcome to Sienna and her family joining 5-6 W. We also welcome Beighley and his family and Makayla and family to our PPS community. Beighley and Makayla join 2-3 B.

We also send a very special welcome to our students in kindergarten, together with their families. We are confident your time at PPS will be successful, rewarding and memorable.

Sun Safety Message from Nurse Bec

A reminder to all parents. Please ensure your child brings a school hat to wear each school day between the months of September and April. The weather is now warming up and the UV is increasing rapidly. The UV’s average this November alone is ‘very high’ on the UV index scale. This indicates that even on cloudy or colder days, sunburn can still occur. Wearing a hat as well as sunscreen on exposed skin is necessary when playing outdoors. We encourage all parents to assist in applying sunscreen to children prior to the school day. Please be especially mindful of this as we approach end of year excursions and outdoor sporting activities.

School Association AGM

March 2nd 2021

Nominations will be called shortly for vacant Parent positions and we ask parents to consider nominating to support our School Association. Further details have been sent home.

Inquiry in the Library 2021

During this time students will be discovering how libraries work, exploring books, developing a love of reading, and learning lifelong skills through inquiry investigations and real-world, hands-on learning experiences.

To ensure students learning during Inquiry in the Library lessons is uninterrupted, students will not borrow books during this time.

Students will be invited to return and borrow new books before school on their allocated day, as follows:

P-1D, P-1WR, P-1WI and 2-3B Tuesday 8.30-9.00am

  • the medical practitioner’s specific prescribed instructions for administration on the pharmacist’s label;
  • the safe transfer of medication to the school;

  • Parents must sign students out for appointments during the day.

EARLY LEAVING

  • Parents needing to collect children during the day are asked to advise the school by note or phone call earlier in the day.

When can your child be authorised to be absent from school?

Changes have been made to provide certainty for schools, parents and students as to the reasons a child can be authorised to be absent from school.

Reasons your child can be authorised to be absent include:

  • sickness/incapacity
  • medical, legal or related appointments
  • natural disaster or extreme weather preventing your child from safely attending their enrolled school
  • terminal illness of an immediate family member
  • bereavement of a person your child had a close, significant or family relationship with
  • having witnessed or been subjected to family violence
  • being a participant or official at a recognised State, National or International event
  • participation in a recognised learning experience
  • an application for home education being received by the Education Registrar and provisional registration being granted.

What will happen if my child is absent for a reason that isn’t listed?

The absence will be recorded as an unauthorised absence.

Principals receive notifications about the number of unauthorised absences your child has.

Your child’s school may send you a letter notifying you of the number of unauthorised absences your child has.

They will seek to work with you to increase your child’s attendance to maximise their learning if the Principal is concerned about your child’s attendance.

What happens if my family go on holiday during school term?

Schools have always encouraged family holidays to be planned for during the scheduled school holiday breaks.

If your family decides to take a holiday during school term, you are encouraged to discuss your plans with the Principal. Penalties will not apply if an absence is explained.

Happy Birthday

Costumes for the Bicentenary Picnic

As the Bicentenary 2021 celebrates 200 years since Perth was named it was thought a simple way to be inclusive with the costuming was to highlight costumes in 100 year blocks.

1821 -

Your best resource will be the internet.

Just type in children’s clothing of the 1830’s. There are some simple line drawings that would be easy to copy.

There is also a little series on ABC iview called ‘Convict Kids’ which illustrates convict clothing.

Be wary of using the term ‘Colonial’ in the search engine because it will throw up

American Colonial which is a little different to Australian colonial

1921 -

Search ‘Children’s clothing of the 1920’s. Pintrest has a wealth of pictures and ideas’

2021 -

This is the easiest one of all.

I am happy to help with ideas and patterns and sewing advice.

If there are any people with sewing skills who are happy to help others please let me know and I can pass on that information.

I would suggest the holidays are a good time to start gathering ideas and materials and making or assembling costumes as the picnic will be early in the the first term and life can get fairly hectic around this time.

Please email or text me in the first instance.
