Grade 6 Leavers

From the Principal…..

A sense of excitement and celebration has continued for the past few weeks with many end-of-year events and celebrations. All grades have celebrated the end of the school year with P-6 trips to the Aquatic Centre and a Kinder picnic at school. Presentation assemblies and our traditional Nativity have been held within Covid safe protocols and many parents have been able to join us to share in their celebrations.

Facebook Premiere

This week the first ever Facebook Premiere was available for school community members to view. Monday evening saw many people log on to watch our Grade 6 Presentation Assembly. On Wednesday evening at 7pm, The Nativity will be available as a Facebook Premiere. Follow the links on our Facebook page to watch our prep students and their wonderful presentation of the story of Christmas.

QR Codes

Although we cannot predict the future with any kind of certainty, there is a strong possibility that sign-in procedures for parents on school grounds will continue into next year. Recently we have welcomed many parents on-site for presentations, but using the paper sign-in process has been very slow. Please download the QR code scanner during the holiday break so that you are familiar with this technology ready for the beginning of the school year. This is available from the App Store free of charge.

Farewells

The end of the year is a time for saying goodbye to students, families and staff who have been a part of our PPS community this year and in some cases, for many years. This week we farewell our grade 6 cohort and several other students who will be heading to new schools next year. We also say goodbye to a number of families who have been a part of our PPS community for many years. We wish you success and good fortune in the future as you head to other opportunities. Many thanks to Mel Lucas, Chair of our School Association and Jacquie Dalton who has headed up the fundraising committee for a number of years. We deeply appreciate your commitment and work for our school community.

We also farewell a number of staff who have worked as part of our PPS team, making significant contributions to student learning and success.

Goodbye and thank you to:

Ben Johnson

Best wishes to everyone for the future and thank you so much for your commitment and work at our school.

Congratulations Mr Johnson!

Congratulations to Ben Johnson who has been appointed to the position of Lead Numeracy Coach in the north of Tasmania. News of this change in role was announced only yesterday. Ben will be working with a number of schools to lead professional learning in mathematics. We will certainly miss Ben’s high-level contributions to our school but of course we wish him well as he moves to his new position. His expertise in mathematics is well-known and we know he will continue to make a strong contribution to the learning of all students across Northern Tasmania schools. Information about Ben’s replacement at Perth Primary School will be announced to parents as soon as possible.

Bicentenary Picnic

This term many classes have been investigating the history of Perth in preparation for the Bicentenary events which will happen next year. We will be celebrating 200 years since Governor Macquarie named the settlement of Perth. Part of these celebrations will be a Bicentenary Picnic to be held on Thursday 25th February. Children will be invited to come dressed in period costume from either 1820s, 1920s or 2020s. Early notice is provided of this event so that work can begin on preparing costumes for children during the summer break. See a message about Costume design and making later in this bulletin for further ideas.

Festive Season Greetings

What an incredible year 2020 has been with changes, challenges and opportunities none of us could have imaged! As the year draws to a close, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all PPS families and community members a happy, festive and safe holiday break and a very Merry Christmas. We look forward to seeing everyone back for another busy year of learning starting on Wednesday 3rd February, 2021.

Happy holidays everyone!

Sun Safety Message from Nurse Bec

A reminder to all parents. Please ensure your child brings a school hat to wear each school day between the months of September and April. The weather is now warming up and the UV is increasing rapidly. The UV’s average this November alone is ‘very high’ on the UV index scale. This indicates that even on cloudy or colder days, sunburn can still occur. Wearing a hat as well as sunscreen on exposed skin is necessary when playing outdoors. We encourage all parents to assist in applying sunscreen to children prior to the school day. Please be especially mindful of this as we approach end of year excursions and outdoor sporting activities.

Costumes for the Bicentenary Picnic

As the Bicentenary 2021 celebrates 200 years since Perth was named it was thought a simple way to be inclusive with the costuming was to highlight costumes in 100 year blocks.

1821 -

Your best resource will be the internet.

Just type in children’s clothing of the 1830’s. There are some simple line

drawings that would be easy to copy.

There is also a little series on ABC iview called ‘Convict Kids’ which illustrates convict

clothing.

Be wary of using the term ‘Colonial’ in the search engine because it will throw up

American Colonial which is a little different to Australian colonial

1921 -

Search ‘Children’s clothing of the 1920’s. Pintrest has a wealth of pictures and ideas’

2021 -

This is the easiest one of all.

I am happy to help with ideas and patterns and sewing advice.

If there are any people with sewing skills who are happy to help others please let me know and I can pass on that information.

I would suggest the holidays are a good time to start gathering ideas and materials and making or assembling costumes as the picnic will be early in the the first term and life can get fairly hectic around this time.

Please email or text me in the first instance.
