Staffing Farewells
At the end of the term we will be saying farewell to several members of staff:
Martina McIntyre
Martina has announced her retirement after her contributions as a staff member at Perth Primary for over 25 years, starting when PPS was located in Frederick Street as a teacher assistant and working more recently in our library. ‘Mrs Mac’ as she is fondly known, is a much-respected member of our team and has made a great contribution to children’s learning through her work in the library. We wish Martina a very happy and healthy retirement, filled with fun, friends and family.
Emily Butler
Emily’s family is relocating to NSW and we wish her well in her move. Emily has worked with all children K – 6 in music and made a highly valued contribution all things music, particularly to our focus on values with the ‘Sing-Along’ segment in our assemblies. Thank you Emily for your great work at PPS and best wishes for the future as you settle in Newcastle.
Mel Petterwood
Mel was appointed to PPS as our Social Worker at the beginning of 2019 and has supported many children during that time. Mel’s caring and supportive work has made a significant contribution to students’ wellbeing. Thank you Mel for your work with us and best wishes for you to continue your work in other school communities.
Annual School Review
As part of our annual review process we have been collecting feedback on our school priorities and some other matters at PPS. A structural change this year has been around the organisation to support children’s learning, happy playing and getting along with others. Earlier we trialled some changes to the times for play, eating and learning, and we have continued with that structure for Term 4. Feedback from staff and students very strongly endorses the play first then EAT, CHAT & CALM arrangement we have in place for its significant contribution to settled and focussed learning time in class. We are seeking parent input on these matters and have designed a feedback survey which will be emailed to all families, along with this newsletter. Please complete the survey questions by Wednesday 9th December if you would like your thoughts to be included in our feedback.
Supporting Our Students To Be Their Best
Our expectations for student learning, playing and getting along together are deeply embedded in our school culture. The language of MYTERN and Zones of Regulation support students to be calm, happy and focused and to stay in control. We teach students that it is normal to experience a wide range of emotions each day. All emotions are valid and okay – as long as we remain in control. Hurting yourself or someone else shows you are out of control.
We’ve also been explicit about the meaning of bullying. Bullying means - Repeated, targeted and intentional actions to frighten, harm, hurt or intimidate someone. It involves an imbalance of POWER between the bully and target.
This week Rose Parker, a consultant and mediator has been working with our grade 5 / 6 students to help them understand more about how their words and actions can effect the happiness, confidence and wellbeing of others. This adds to our work on values and being kind. Please talk with teachers or with me if you have questions about this work.
End-of-Year Raffle
Many thanks to the fundraising sub-committee of the PPS School Association for organising a highly-success Christmas raffle as a major fundraiser. Thank you to Heidi Kent from Bunnings Kings Meadows for providing a BBQ.
This will be a bonus to the first prize, along with the shell of Christmas goodies donated by our PPS community. Please return all sold and unsold tickets to the office by Monday 14th December. The raffle will be drawn on the final day of school. More ticket books are available from the office.
End-of-Year Events
There are many events happening at school this week and next as we approach the end of the school year. Yesterday there was an orientation session for parents of 2021 prep students to share some details about the organisation and learning program in prep. The Grade Six Presentation Assembly will be next week along with the Leavers’ Dinner for grade six students and the first of our end-of-year celebrations at Launceston Aquatic Centre. Reports will be sent home on Friday 11th December. Venue density and Covid restrictions will apply to these events and letters have already been sent to families of children involved to allocate seating.

Sun Safety Message from Nurse Bec
A reminder to all parents. Please ensure your child brings a school hat to wear each school day between the months of September and April. The weather is now warming up and the UV is increasing rapidly. The UV’s average this November alone is ‘very high’ on the UV index scale. This indicates that even on cloudy or colder days, sunburn can still occur. Wearing a hat as well as sunscreen on exposed skin is necessary when playing outdoors. We encourage all parents to assist in applying sunscreen to children prior to the school day. Please be especially mindful of this as we approach end of year excursions and outdoor sporting activities.
School Association Christmas Raffle
The School Association is holding a Christmas raffle. Raffle books were sent home last week with students.
We have a few great prizes already donated (prizes listed on raffle books) which go out this week, but we would like donations for our major prize. We have a shell pool from Bunnings and would like to fill it with groceries, Christmas gifts or Christmas accessories. Anything to brighten up a Christmas day. There will be a donation box in the office for you to donate anything you can manage which would be greatly appreciated.
The raffle will be drawn on the last day of school, Thursday 17th December, and winners will be contacted by phone so please ensure full names and phone numbers are on the raffle book tickets that are returned by Monday 14th December.

Plastic Free/Recycle
In our canteen we are trying our best to be as Plastic Free and recycle as much as possible.
- We don’t use any plastic wrap anymore at all, we place our pre-made toasted sandwiches into large Sistema tubs before they are toasted.
- We use metal spoons for our frozen yoghurt
- We use block cheese which we slice and grate which are placed in Sistema containers
- We use reusable bowls for our popcorn and cheese and biscuits
- Any items that can or need to be frozen (Ham, Chicken, Pineapple or Baked Beans) is frozen in Sistema reusable containers
- Our Cheese and Biscuits and Popcorn are sold in reusable bowls which are returned to the canteen
- We wash and dry yoghurt containers and lids to recycle
- We only use paper bags for our lunch orders
- We use a piece of foil to cover our pizza muffins before placing into a paper bag
- We place 4 Black Tubs in our eating areas so all our items are returned: bowls, spoons, yoghurt containers. They are returned after lunch to the canteen washed and put in appropriate places
- We have 4 Soft Plastic Bins around the eating areas. Only soft plastic is placed in these bins. Our Waste Warriors empty the bins on Wednesdays and the soft plastic is taken to the appropriate collection areas or Coles or Woolworths. The bins are washed and placed back in the playground eating areas
- We recycle everything that is a one-use item in the responsible way
- We only offer wholemeal bread, rolls and wraps and wholemeal fruit loaf when available
