From the Principal…..
Our annual Swimming and Water Safety Program has started this week for students in grades 3 – 5, as well as some grade 6 students. The program aims to assist students to become competent and safe in the water. As our island home of Tasmania is surrounded by water and features many lakes, rivers and streams swimming is considered to be a life skill, as well as a pleasurable leisure activity. Students have certainly been enjoying their lessons this week, with wide smiles all round.
Kinder 2021 Parent Meeting
Last Friday we welcomed our 2021 kinder children and their families for the first formal meeting about starting kindergarten in 2021. We send a very warm welcome to all kindergarten families who will be joining us as students begin their formal learning journey at Perth Primary School. There are limited vacancies in kindergarten for next year. Please pass this message to anyone in your neighbourhood who is yet to enrol.
Classes Prep – Grade 6 – 2021
Planning started for our prep – grade 6 classes some time ago, and we are nearing the completion of this process. Our goal is to provide class placements for all students which support their learning in academic, emotional, social and physical ways. Our class structure for next year will be:

Facebook Premiere
Everyone is aware of the changes, opportunities and challenges presented this year by Covid 19. As part of our planning for end-of-year presentations and assemblies we have been developing our ability to record and screen some events at school in real time. This is called live streaming. We have a team of staff members interested in this technology and they will be practising the skills required so that some end-of-year presentations can be ‘live streamed’ for members of our school community. This means we can overcome the venue density limits in our hall and still allow parents and family members to share in these special end-of-year events. Facebook Premiere offers viewing on a specific date and time only, with the live screening offered as a ‘once-only’ viewing which cannot be saved or viewed again. Please contact us at school if you have questions about this.
Packing Boxes Available
Recently we packed and moved our library collection to make way for new works to be completed in the library. As this work is now complete, and the book collection has been returned to the library, we have a large number of packing boxes available to give away. The boxes are smaller and especially designed for books which are quite heavy. They would also be highly suitable for packing breakable and/or heavier items like plates and glasses. Please contact the office if you’d like these boxes and can help us to fit with our priority of Reuse/Reduce/Recycle.
Esk Band Performance
Members of Esk Band are busy preparing for a performance at assembly in week 8. The assembly will be presented by members of the student leadership groups – Student Cabinet and Student Parliament. Only parents of students in these groups are able to attend to ensure we comply with venue density limits.
Annual School Review and School Improvement Planning
We are currently working through our annual school review process in line with DoE requirements. As part of this work we want to seek feedback from our school community about some of our priorities and processes. Further information will be available soon.
Bicentenary of Perth – 2021
Next year the township of Perth will be celebrating 200 years since the naming of the settlement by Governor Macquarie. As part of this study and our celebrations, PPS is planning a traditional picnic early in the school year. Children will have the option of dressing in costume to mark the 200 year anniversary. Draft plans for the event include traditional games and a parade of costumes from either 1820s, 1920s or 2020s. We are suggesting inexpensive but creative options like clothing made from calico/hessian or the carefully placed addition of a sheet or tablecloth. Advance notice of the picnic is provided so that families can make a start on the ‘costumes’ by either borrowing, making or collecting appropriate items to wear for this special day.

Sun Safety Message from Nurse Bec
A reminder to all parents. Please ensure your child brings a school hat to wear each school day between the months of September and April. The weather is now warming up and the UV is increasing rapidly. The UV’s average this November alone is ‘very high’ on the UV index scale. This indicates that even on cloudy or colder days, sunburn can still occur. Wearing a hat as well as sunscreen on exposed skin is necessary when playing outdoors. We encourage all parents to assist in applying sunscreen to children prior to the school day. Please be especially mindful of this as we approach end of year excursions and outdoor sporting activities.
