From the Principal…..

This is our final newsletter for Term 3 in what has been an extraordinary year. We finish the term with all students focused very well on their learning and improvements to our school environment getting underway. We wish all families a safe and restful holiday break and encourage everyone at PPS to explore our own State to help boost recovery. We look forward to hearing about the places visited and enjoyed early next term.

Stimulus Works Starting

Next Monday a range of projects will begin at school to improve the learning environments for students. This work is part of a stimulus package by the government, and our school was fortunate to be selected for a range of works. The most significant is a change to our library. Many thanks to all members of staff who have helped with the enormous task of sorting and packing the library collection ready for this work. Other projects include painting in various places and new shelving, as well as some work to the Cottage. With work scheduled for completion during the holiday break we look forward to enjoying the refurbishments early next term.

Communication with our Families

During Covid some limitations were made to the number of adults on-site to keep everyone safe. Restrictions have been eased and we certainly welcome parents who need to come into school grounds to talk with teachers or pass on information about their child. If you are staying longer than a quick drop-off, there are Visitor Screening Forms available to record your details. The increase in student initiative, independence and resilience has been clearly noticeable with children very familiar with meeting parents outside the gate in recent times. These skills, attributes and confidence help to set children up for success in the future.

Excursions and End-of-Year Events

Last week our kinder classes visited Hagley Farm Environment Centre for the first excursion of the year. They had a wonderful time. Restrictions on school excursions mean that students can now visit outside venues, but we must be guided by the Covid Safety Plan and density limits of the venue. 5 / 6 sports exchanges have also been happening at different schools for this term. We are currently planning our end-of-year events including the whole-school celebration which will be held at the Launceston Aquatic Centre. Permission forms for this excursion will be sent home early next term.

Planning for 2021

This planning is now underway and we would welcome hearing from families who are new to the Perth community. Please encourage any new neighbours in your area to contact the school. Next term we will begin the class placement process where every student will be placed in the best possible class to support their learning. Children are always placed with a known learning buddy with whom they work well rather than necessarily being placed with best friends who do not always support each other’s learning success. If you have information to share about this process, which is not known by the school, please contact me in writing. Unfortunately requests for particular classes cannot be considered.

Year 1 Phonics Screen

During the past few weeks all students in grade 1 have been assessed for their knowledge of phonics and phonemic awareness. PPS is currently part of a pilot program to test year 1 students so that phonics instruction can be more targeted according to student needs. This work combines well with our priority on developing quality writers at PPS as well as our work with Data Wise Inquiry which helps us to use evidence to improve our teaching practice and student learning.

Playground Developments

Recently we have been working to make some changes to our playground to better support children playing happily together. Many thanks to Mr Muir for his development of the space near the Fore St entrance into a sensory playspace for P – 2 children. Thank you also to Mrs Johnson for painting the mural of the railway tunnel for the wall. It is satisfying to see so many children showing highly developed social skills when they play. Social intelligence and self regulation are two of the character qualities important for successful play times with others.

Wishing all members of our PPS community a safe and happy holiday break. We look forward to seeing all students back at school and ready for learning on Monday 12th October. Happy holidays everyone!

Kinder News…….

As part of the Education Department’s Bouncing Back – Talk and Read Project, all our Kindergarten and LiL families have been provided with take home bags containing items to support and encourage talking, reading and playing together. Our Kinder students were very excited to receive their bag last week. Thank you to the Early Learning Unit for this great initiative!

Last Wednesday, Kinder Shephard headed out on their very first school excursion. We were very grateful to be able to visit Hagley Farm and learn about lots of different farm animals!

“Thank you for letting us pat the big cow.” (Wyatt)
“Thank you for letting us have fun on the tractor.” (Vienna)

Country Gold Carnivals

Last Friday we had 21 students competing in this year’s Country Gold Carnivals.
