From the Principal…..
Learning, Playing and Getting Along at PPS
Our message about learning, playing and getting along is shared with students almost every day as we remind them of their ‘job’ when they come to school. Everyone at PPS is familiar with our Strive for Five and can talk about what it looks like to be a good listening and a good friend. Our YES / NO behaviours are also well-embedded. This year we have turned our focus to developing a common understanding of the language of learning. We know that learning is about knowing more and being able to show what you know by talking, writing, making and doing. Asking children about what they are learning rather than what they are doing is our first step in this work.
Update on School Crossing
Last week you may have noticed some representatives from Northern Midlands Council at the front of our school to assess traffic. This follows some inquiries about possible upgrades in Fairtlough Street to better provide for student safety.
Further updates on the plan for a crossing at the front of the school will be shared once they are available. It is likely that there will be changes to the street edge and signage to improve safety for pedestrians crossing the road.
Changes to Assembly Roster
Assemblies are currently being held each week to allow all classes to host an assembly as well as providing for more parents to attend. We know assemblies are highly valued by all members of our school community as they provide valuable learning, celebration and leadership opportunities. Speaking with confidence to a large audience is a quality for which PPS students are well-known and widely acknowledged. Awards in this week’s assembly were connected to our character quality – Social Intelligence in connection with Mrs Atkins’ visit. Mrs Atkins is well-known for her strong relationships and deep connections with students, parents and colleagues.
Mrs Atkins – Special Guest at Assembly
At this week’s assembly we welcomed Deb Atkins as a guest so that we could formally acknowledge her enormous contributions to our school over time. All classes prepared a special farewell message for Mrs Atkins and these were bound into a beautiful keep-sake book. Mrs Atkins formally retired at the beginning of Term 2. She is looking forward to spending more time with family and friends and being in her beautiful garden.
Dr Adam Fraser – Striving Schools
Last week members of our staff logged into a live event presented by Dr Adam Fraser. We also shared this link with all families so that parents could share in learning about how to support their child with learning and living successes. Dr Fraser presented a model for us to help children through the many minor struggles they face every day, so that they are better able to manage more significant struggles. Please mention the session in conversations with your child’s teacher if you logged in and found the messages helpful.
Social Intelligence
This character quality is one of the 7 ‘game changers’ we have made a focus for our work across the school for the past few years. Social Intelligence is about getting along well together by understanding the impact of your words and actions on others. Developing a clear understanding of your own emotions is the first step to understanding how your own actions affect others.
When a person knows what makes other people tick, he or she is displaying social intelligence. They’re aware of the motives and feelings of themselves and others, and how to fit into different social situations. They can feel comfortable and say the right thing no matter where they are or who they are with. They understand the different expectations in many different social settings such as being at school or playing on the weekend with friends. Social intelligence involves two general components:
- Social awareness: what we sense about others
- Social facility: what we do with that awareness
Year One Phonics Screen
During the next few weeks we will be assessing the phonics knowledge of all students in Grade 1 as we participate in a Statewide pilot of the Year One Phonics screen. This assessment will provide valuable information for us about the phonics knowledge of all students in grade one. Research has clearly shown that explicit teaching of phonics during the early years is an important component of learning to read.
