Kinder Artwork – Road Safety Message

From the Principal…..
Congratulations to our school community and our parents and carers who have been so respectful and considerate of others in following the protocols and guidelines during restrictions related to the Covid 19 pandemic. The Premier announced last Friday that Tasmania is now moving to Stage 3 restrictions, just in time for the school holidays. This means that more limitations have been lifted and usual school procedures will be in place from the beginning of Term 3. Thank you once again for your co-operation to ensure the safety of everyone in our PPS community.
Doing Your Part to Keep Tasmania Safe
Tasmanians have worked hard to limit the spread of Covid 19, and our results as a state have been impressive. We have worked together but maintained our distance from each other. We cannot become complacent, as we have seen what can happen in other jurisdictions. Here are five important steps for every Tasmanian to continue to help with Staying Safe:
Please remember we still need your support to reduce the risk of outbreaks and I encourage you to continue to:
- maintain physical distancing;
- practice good hygiene and wash your hands;
- get tested if you have any symptoms;
- stay at home if you are unwell; and
- download the COVIDSafe app.
Bunnings Donation Packs
Thank you to Bunnings for their generous donation pack of sporting equipment that all classes are sharing and classroom prize packs which will be used for end-of-term awards. Two prizes will be awarded to students in each class Prep - 6. These awards will be published in the next newsletter of students showing resilience and character qualities this term as we know that this makes such a difference to learning success.
Balancing Strong Relationships
The Covid 19 pandemic has brought many restrictions to our old ways of working, but also brought us new technologies with which to communicate. Since March the changes in the education space, just like the changes in every context have been unprecedented. We have missed the face-to-face opportunities for quick catch ups with parents and many families have found other ways to contact teachers such as phone or email to stay in touch. While these platforms are convenient and efficient, please remember that staff will respond when they can. Staff members will reply during their working hours and not at night or on weekends as this is not a reasonable expectation. Perth Primary School is one of a number of schools statewide which is investigating the options provided for parents by expanding our parent access through the CANVAS platform. More information will be provided about this when updates become available.
Staffing Update
Larissa Clayton will be returning from maternity leave and will be joining Ms Hernandez teaching 1-2 CH. Mrs Clayton replaces Mrs Forrester who left at the end of Term 1, also on maternity leave. Larissa will be teaching on Mondays and Tuesdays each week.
Next term we will welcome Mr Daniel Larson who will join our PPS team to teach history and geography across all classes. We welcome Mr Larson who will work across the school. We look forward to Mr Larson’s contribution to PPS.
Collect and Go
Parents collecting their child from kindergarten may now wait in the kindergarten playground while they are waiting for the bell at the end of the day. Thank you to all parents and carers who have followed protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of all PPS community members.
Happy and SAFE Holidays
Wishing all PPS community members a SAFE and happy holiday. We look forward to seeing students back ready for school on Tuesday 21st July. Monday is a professional learning day for staff.
Mural on PPS Grounds.
Yesterday the student leadership group visited the mural at the train park to study the mural and to suggest ideas to the Perth Bicentenary committee which is co-ordinating other murals around the Perth township. The murals celebrate 200 years of settlement in Perth. Parents are also welcome to make suggestions. Please contact me at school if you have ideas about the mural which will be created and placed on the school grounds to celebrate the history of schools in Perth.
Appreciation Day
The School Association is hosting an Appreciation Day Stall to provide opportunities for students to buy gifts for the special family members and carers in their lives who provide them with love, care and support. This links closely with our values priority on gratitude, respect and appreciation. The stalls will be held over two days in term 3. Please support the School Association in making this stall a success by donating suitable items as gifts for the stall. Collection boxes have been placed in all classrooms. Donations will be gratefully received until the end of week 2 next term.
School Crossing and Road Safety Concerns
Recently a number of concerns have been raised about children crossing roads and riding bikes in ways which cause alarm for drivers. Children and families are reminded that using the crossing on the main road is the safest option. Parents are asked to escort their child across the road at the front of the school. Children riding bikes should follow safety protocols and ride on the left side of the road. The holiday period is a good time to practise these safety messages with your child.

Plastic Free/Recycle
In our canteen we are trying our best to be as Plastic Free and recycle as much as possible.
- We don’t use any plastic wrap anymore at all, we place our pre made toasted sandwiches into large Sistema tubs before they are toasted.
- We use metal spoons for our frozen yoghurt
- We use block cheese which we slice and grate which are placed in Sistema containers
- We use reusable bowls for our popcorn and cheese and biscuits
- Any items that can or need to be frozen (Ham, Chicken, Pineapple or Baked Beans) we freeze in Sistema reusable containers
- Our Cheese and Biscuits and Popcorn are sold in reusable bowls which are returned to the canteen
- We wash and dry yoghurt containers and lids to recycle
- We only use paper bags for our lunch orders
- We use a piece of foil to cover our pizza muffins before placing into a paper bag
- We have 4 Soft Plastic Bins around the eating areas, only soft plastic is placed in these bins. Our Waste Warriors empty the bins on Wednesdays and the soft plastic it taken to the appropriate deposit areas, Coles or Woolworths. The bins are washed and placed back in the playground eating areas
We place 4 Black Tubs in our eating areas for all our return items; bowls, spoons, yoghurt containers. They are returned after lunch to the canteen to be washed and put in appropriate places
