From the Principal
It has been an absolute pleasure to walk through our playground during the past week and to see our students enjoying the company of others during their times at play. It’s hard is describe the sounds of excited play but the ‘buzz’ of more than 200 children’s voices has certainly brought smiles and enjoyment to adults and duty teachers.
It has been wonderful to see children return to school so eager to learn, play happily and get along so well with everyone. School has been a very happy place. Congratulations to everyone who has remembered the messages about our high expectations for learning, playing and behaviour at our place.
Daily Structure
During the past few weeks we’ve been testing out some possible changes to the daily organisation to see what works best to support children’s learning success. Our focus is on which structures best support children’s learning, playing and getting along well with everyone.
We’ve been strongly committed to daily physical education to get our bodies moving ready for the day’s learning. Research clearly supports this link. We’re also deeply committed to the two hour literacy block with one hour dedicated to reading and another to writing each day. So the compromise has been to start with DPE at 8.45 each day, Tuesday to Friday with our start made yesterday.
Another significant change has been to play first and eat second at the first play break. This allows children to go straight to the playground after the steady learning time during the morning block and run, climb, play and talk with friends during their playtime. They have a significant break time to play, before coming together to calm, eat and chat with others before returning to class. This time is planned to encourage students to get themselves into the ‘Green Zone’ for learning before returning to the classroom.
We’ve been seeking staff input and student voice as well as talking with the School Association about the possibility of changes and so far the messages seem very positive. There are a few administrative matters to work through in the background. Please talk with your child about what this means for them. We will seek for further feedback about the changes at the end of next week.
Covid 19 Restrictions and Safety Plan
Thank you to parents and members of our school community who continue to follow all guidelines and requirements to keep our school safe. The requirements and procedures are directives from Public Health or from Department of Education, with the clear intention to keep PPS and also Tasmanians safe and healthy. The message is very clear, with 4 important steps to follow:
- Wash your hands
- Stay 1.5m from others – Physical Distancing measures
- Cover coughs and sneezes with elbow or a tissue
- Stay at home if you are unwell and seek a test if unsure
Adequate tracking and tracing measures in the community give confidence to the Tasmania authorities that they can step-back restrictions and manage a second wave if this was to happen. I thank you for your ongoing commitment to the Tasmanian effort and ask for your continued vigilance to our collective efforts as we work together to ensure the health and safety of our community.
Student Wellbeing Message from Nurse Bec
This week’s message from Nurse Bec is about Internet Safety tips for kids. Follow the link below and talk with your child about safe and ethical behaviour online. This message is appropriate for all children from early screen users to teens.
Have a look at another great interactive website on safety to share with you child:

Reporting to Parents
This week at our staff forum we discussed a possible format for reporting to parents and carers about student progress. Teachers and families have been in close communication during the Learning at Home time and we plan to build on this excellent foundation as we provide some further details about student progress this year. Parents understand their child’s learning well, better this year than at any time in the past. Our role will be to report on their learning in relation to the standard expected for their year level and which skills and concepts are next steps. In line with DoE guidelines, a written report will be sent home which gives a brief snapshot of student learning achieved this year. This will be available early next Term.
The report will provide an indication about achievement in English and Maths, a student wellbeing comment and some comments for the next directions in learning. Parents are able to contact teachers by phone or email to answer any questions raised.
Farewells and Welcomes
Welcome to Seth who has joined 1-2 H this week.
We farewell Zac and his family who have moved to another school. We wish Zac much success in his learning at his new school. Farewell also to Degan who has returned to his previous school.
