From the Principal…..
Welcome everyone to a very different term at Perth Primary School – one like we have never known before. Congratulations to everyone who has been managing with the inevitable changes which none of us can control. Whether you are learning at home online or collecting packs to provide direction for your learning or coming to school the important thing is that you are giving your best efforts, you are resilient, focused and engaged. We know that learning will look different to normal, as it’s impossible to mirror explicit classroom opportunities. Keep up the great start as we work through this tricky time together.
Canvas – Department of Education Learning Platform
Many students and families have now been accessing learning at home using the DoE’s supported learning platform called Canvas. This platform allows us to design learning and upload it so that it’s easily accessible. Students can then work from home or wherever they log onto their account. Canvas also has many other functions such as a chat, video and live streaming for lessons. Some students have been uploading their work and providing feedback for others.
The DoE is currently working behind the scenes to provide parent log on details for the enrolling parent for each student to allow parents to support their child’s learning. Further details about this once these are available.
Term 2 2020 – A changing world
The first week of ‘Learning at Home’ through Canvas has seen some amazing learning innovations from our team at PPS and I am filled with admiration and gratitude for their efforts and skills. In a short time, our team have transformed classroom environments to support three distinct learning environments – Canvas, paper and classroom. Our relationships with students and their families remain at the heart of everything we do. I spent some time trawling around Canvas at the time of writing this edition and saw daily chats, daily check in, sharing circles, opportunities for feedback and lots more as ways to connect with students. We are here to talk with you via email, phone and in person for any ways we can assist with your child’s learning. We want to help make this learning experience as valuable as possible. As well as the content of learning experiences offered, the values we bring to this Term 2 experience and the character qualities which guide our actions will help to shape our success. Children definitely mirror what they see from adults so our role in guiding their actions through this time is particularly important.

Cyber Safety Reminder
Online safety is always important but additional reminders are essential when children are spending more time online. Although any websites which are recommended by teachers are carefully screened, home networks do not necessarily have the same security protections as they do at school. Talking with your child about ethical behaviours online and monitoring their online behaviours are important to ensure your child stays safe online. Further information can be found at:

Mindfulness and Gratitude
These words are used often in the general media at the moment. Right now we seem to have more time to appreciate the simple pleasures which have been forgotten in our usual frantic pace of life. Although stresses and anxiety have also come with the pandemic, we can only control things within our own circle of influence. Help your children by turning off the news, getting plenty of sleep and exercise and appreciating the wonderful things Tasmania has to offer. Try these simple things – the feel of wind in your hair, sun on your back, the rain on the window or an umbrella . . .
Thank you for your continued support and co-operation during these unprecedented times as we work together for the best interests of everyone in our school community. We are certainly in this together and we look forward to the time when we are all back together as a PPS community.
Take care and stay well.

New Sport Team Uniforms
Thank you to VEC Shaw joint venture for donating our new sports uniforms. The VEC Shaw joint venture made a commitment last year to sponsor uniforms for our Netball and Football teams, as a sponsorship representing the teamwork and commitment to our local community that has helped make the bypass project a success. We are absolutely delighted and what a wonderful surprise when all students return to school to look forward to wearing them proudly this year and into the future. |
25 Years of Service to Perth Primary School
