Glover Exhibition – Student Cabinet and Student Parliament

Today, members of the Student Cabinet and Parliament visited the Glover Exhibition as a leadership experience. They learnt about landscape art and about the history of colonial painter, John Glover. Students voted for their favourite art work for the People’s Choice Award.

Clean Up Australia

Last Wednesday we were all involved in collecting rubbish around our school grounds as part of the Clean Up Australia campaign. It is hard to imagine that there could be very much to collect, as there are rubbish bins clearly available, and mostly PPS students are the only ones in our grounds. But to our surprise we were able to find a huge assortment of chip and snack packets stashed under bushes and poked into nooks and treat packets in places where they just shouldn’t be! Perhaps wrapper-free Wednesdays every week seems like a good solution to help keep our school grounds clean and tidy!

Perth Primary School – A Safe School Environment

Part of the DoE’s expectations around developing a safe school environment involves developing a Respectful Volunteer and Visitor Policy. This was completed in line with the new Education Act and ratified by the School Association last year. A copy of the full policy is available at the main office or by following this link.

Key points from the policy are about maintaining a safe school environment to support student learning and being respectful to all members of our community.

Reporting to Parents – Preliminary Progress Reports

This Friday Preliminary Progress Reports will be sent home with students to report to parents about the start all students in to Prep – Grade 6 have made in settling into the year and developing the learning behaivours we know are so important in terms of success at school. The reports are in line with DoE policy and form part of our commitment to work in partnership with parents to ensure that every student achieves their potential at PPS. We know that when families and schools work together, students can achieve far more.

Please read your child’s report with a lens of which skills, attitudes and competencies are appropriate for their age and stage of development. Teachers have had many conversations about what is ‘acceptable’ for example for a child in Prep compared to a child in grade 3 or grade 6.

As the reports are not designed nor controlled by PPS staff, we cannot change the criteria of ‘acceptable’ or ‘needs attention’ although some refinement may be possible in the future. Each of the markers have been rated according to the standards appropriate for your child’s age or stage of development.

Please discuss your child’s report with the class teacher if you have questions or comments.

Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to everyone involved in our very successful athletics carnival which was held last Friday at the Perth Football Oval. Excellent sporting attitudes, outstanding athletic displays, great collaboration and cooperation and respect for everyone at the ground were the order of the day. These are outstanding examples of the type of culture and character qualities we have come to expect at PPS. Congratulations! Many thanks to Mel Fleming and her helpers for the many, many hours of careful organisation to ensure a highly successful day.

Respectful School Volunteer and Visitor Policy

Student leaders 2020 were presented to our assembly and received their leadership badges at this week’s assembly. Student leadership is one of the avenues for ‘student voice’ at PPS – a way of hearing about the ideas and opinions students have that help make Perth Primary a better place for learning, playing and getting along well together.

Student leaders are elected by the student body to represent their ideas. Student leaders and their parents sign an agreement agreeing they will follow the terms of their position, showing respect and responsibility and modelling the school expectations with pride.

Esk Band Program

The Esk Band Program for 2020 will begin for students involved in this optional opportunity next week. There are still vacancies available in all instrumental groups. Learning a musical instrument can have many benefits including building confidence, developing social skills, developing fine-motor control and benefiting other areas of learning. Esk Band is a co-sponsored program between parents, PPS and the DoE to make lessons affordable, with the cost for parents equal to several take-away coffees each week. This is far less than the cost of private tuition. Further information is available at the office.

3-6 Athletics Carnival

On Friday 6 March our 3-6 Athletics Carnival was held in glorious conditions. Congratulations to all students who participated to the best of their ability. Our key focus was on effort and perseverance, sportsmanship and encouragement. We are proud to say these qualities were well and truly on display throughout the day. Well done to Lyons for winning this year’s Athletics Carnival House competition.

Final results:

Lyons on 1336 points
Bramich on 1244 points
Hirst on 1166 points

Mrs Fleming will now collate results and announce our Perth Athletics Team which will take part in the NMPSSA Athletics Carnival on Friday 20 March. The team will be announced later this week.

Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Years 4-6 Student Wellbeing Survey

The wellbeing of our students is important to us.

To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in Years 4-6 at Perth Primary will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.

The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.

The details for the survey are:

When: Week of Monday 23 March
Who: Grades 4-6
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.

A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4-6 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.

If you would like further information, please contact Ben Johnson (AST) at school.

Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.

Chocolate Milkshakes

Chocolate Milkshakes commence on Tuesday 17th March.
Prep – 6 $1.50
Kinder $1.00
