From the Principal…..
The Welcome BBQ last Thursday afternoon was a wonderful symbol of our school families in action as a supportive celebration of community. Many thanks to our School Association for hosting the event and for providing tasty BBQ foods for the enjoyment of everyone who attended. It was wonderful to see so many parents and family members attend the open classroom sessions to see and hear about regular routines, classroom expectations and learning opportunities. We know that setting the pre-conditions for learning and establishing orderly learning environments are very important during these first few weeks of the year. If you couldn’t make it to the BBQ, please talk with your child’s teacher to arrange another suitable opportunity to visit the classroom. Parents are always welcome at mutually convenient times.
Curiosity and Powerful Learning
Earlier this year our staff worked with visiting educational expert, Wayne Craig to inspire our thinking in the area of curiosity and powerful learning. We’ve learnt about how we can help to enhance curiosity by the way we teach and act ourselves. Every adult has a role to play in modelling the way that we can spark curiosity by questioning and talking with children. Sentence starters such as: I’m wondering about . . . or What might happen if . . . are good places to start. Please chat with us if you have further questions.
Bike and Scooter Safety
Riding or scooting to school is a healthy form of exercise, helps build wellbeing and reduces traffic congestion around the school grounds. However, student safety is our number one priority at PPS. We have clear protocols about riding safely to school and walking bikes and scooters inside the school grounds. You must always walk your bike or scooter from the gate to the bike rake to ensure your own safety and the safety of others. Bike locks are also strongly recommended.
Student Leadership
Student Leadership is a key feature of our school. There are many ways for students to take up leadership roles at PPS, with one of the formal roles being a position as a student leader in our Parliament, Cabinet or as a House Captain. Last week we conducted our elections for these positions for 2020. Congratulations to every student who showed the courage to nominate for these roles, knowing very well that they may not be successful. Taking a chance and putting yourself forward when there is no guarantee of success, takes courage. Congratulations to students who were successful in being elected to positions as House Captains, on the Student Cabinet as the senior leaders and the Student Parliament for grades 1 to grade 5 leaders. We look forward to your leadership and your ideas to improve our school for everyone. Leadership badges will be presented at assembly in week 6. Further information will be provided to parents of students elected to these positions.
Athletics Season
Preparation is well-advanced for this year’s athletics carnival which will be held on Friday 6th March. The main events will be held at the Perth Football Oval, with a program included later in this edition. Congratulations to Mel Fleming for her preparation for this event. Students have been practising and trials have been conducted for the sprints and some other events so that divisions can be organised. We hope to see many parents there to support children’s efforts on the day.
Data Wise School Improvement Inquiry Learning Partnership
This week our school leadership team will begin some professional learning to further enhance student learning outcomes at PPS. The Data Wise program is very well known both in Australia and in other countries for its ability to link outcomes to evidence. We have been invited to participate in the program this year. The Data Wise work will help us to target our efforts to ensure we focus on the right work at the right times to further improve our student outcomes. Already many of our students do very well, but there are still many improvements we can make as we strive to move Perth Primary from a good school to a great one.
Welcomes and Farewells
Farewell to Bron Carroll who has been working as Admin Clerk in our office for much of last year and for the first few weeks of this year. Many thanks for your expertise.

School Nurse
Welcome to a new school year! My name is Bec and I am your School Health Nurse again in 2020. I will be working every Monday at Perth Primary School. The role of the Primary School Nurse is to provide health education and health promotion to students and the school community. Along with health assessments for kindergarten students, I will be engaging all grades in lessons and group activities surrounding health and wellbeing. Some of these lessons and activities will include education on nutrition, personal hygiene, oral care, sun safety, growth and development, positive mental health and mindfulness.
Vision and hearing screens for all primary students are also available on request if there is a specific concern. Consent forms must be signed by a parent/guardian prior to all assessments, including kindergarten health assessments.
Please feel free to visit me for a chat or contact me via the school office on a Monday if you have any concerns or questions regarding your child’s health or the role of the School Nurse. Alternatively you may email at your convenience bec.beeston@education.tas.gov.au
I hope that your child/ren have had a positive start to the year!
Kind Regards,
Nurse Bec
