From the Principal…..
Last week I attended a meeting to discuss plans to celebrate the Bicentenary of Perth township which was settled in 1821. The bicentenary coincides with the sesquicentenary of trains in Tasmania, so this will be a very special year for celebrations. Many exciting and engaging possibilities were discussed as rich learning opportunities for students at PPS during next year in the lead up to celebrations which will be held in February, 2021. Stay tuned for further information as we head into a year of focus on history and geography.
Dental Fissures and Sealant Program
We have welcomed a team of dental nurses to our school who are working from the ‘cottage’ to treat students with a new treatment to help teeth remain healthy for longer. The dental assistants were most complimentary about our polite and respectful students and our welcoming school culture. As they visit many schools, it is wonderful to hear such positive news about our students and their respectful behaviours. Congratulations to students who visited the dental team during the past few days!
Planning for 2020
Our planning for next year continues and we can now announce our class structures at this moment in time. As our resources and staffing are allocated strictly in relation to student numbers, it is critical that we have accurate information about families whose enrolment status may change for 2020. Please encourage new neighbours and others new to the Perth area to contact us so that they can visit our beautiful school.

End-of-Year Celebrations
To allow us to fully include all members of our school community, some changes to the plans for our end-of-year celebrations have been necessary. The prep to grade 2 celebration will remain the same and will still be held at Tailrace Park with a visit to Kids Paradise. The grade 5/6 student celebration will also remain unchanged. Their celebration will be at Cressy Pool as previously advised. Grade 3/4 students will now be travelling to the Glen Dhu Pool on Monday 16th December. The timing of our recent swimming and water safety programs and our swimming carnival means that students will be well practised for a day of fun and swimming at these celebration events!
Payment of School Levies
As we are a government school we receive much of our financial support from the Department of Education. However the funds which come to us as levies from parents help to provide many important programs in classrooms and across the school. At this stage, many levies remain unpaid, or only partly unpaid, and this puts enormous pressure of our ability to provide the same high quality learning as children and families expect. Please call the office to organise a payment plan if you are experiencing financial hardship.
Guest Speaker – Chris Duffy
In yesterday’s assembly we were all enthralled to hear from the amazing Chris Duffy, from Just Like Jack. Chris has paddled, cycled, run and walked his way around many parts of the State to raise awareness of children with disabilities. His messages to us were about SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE – treating all the people you know with kindness and respect. Social Intelligence is about what sort of person you are inside, what you might do or say if you think no-one is watching. Chris also spoke about the GRATITUDE he feels for his own health and wellbeing and for the amazing people and donations which have come his way for his work to help others. He gave us a challenge – to reframe our thinking to Dif-abilities rather than ‘disabilities’.
Presentation at ESK Band and TSTS
Last week many students from our school performed at the Albert Hall as part of the Esk Band Extravaganza. Another large group of students represented us at the Tasmanian Science Talent Search awards at UTAS. All students deserve our congratulations for their fine work and achievements, but the comments about the way they looked and represented PPS have been amazing. Without exception, they were dressed immaculately in full uniform, they had amazing manners and behaviour and were fine ambassadors for our school. Well done everyone!
Communication and Partnerships with Families
Communication and building strong and trusting partnerships with families remains a high priority at our school. Recently we have tried a new strategy in sharing information with families about matters of concern. Please talk with a member of leadership if you have thoughts and opinions to share about this matter.
Profile on Perth - Georgie Purse
Georgie is a senior student at PPS and is a highly accomplished learner. She has excellent learning behaviours which allow her to achieve at the very highest levels in all curriculum levels. Recently she was presented with an award for Aspiration and Achievement which aligns with our values and those of the DoE. At the same time, Georgie is a loyal friend, always striving to be kind and empathetic to others. She is highly admired by staff and her peers for her humility, polite and helpful attitude and the awareness she demonstrates for those around her. Georgie displays the character qualities which we know are important for success at school and in later life. As a grade 5 student, the future is a long way off. Georgie names her ideal jobs as an artist or a netball player at this point in time.
Mrs Lloyd Retires
Next week a group of colleagues will get together to honour the work and career of Mrs Janet Lloyd after a career spanning 42 years. Mrs Lloyd came to Perth Primary School after teaching at Youngtown Primary for more than 15 years. She joined our team three years ago and quickly become an authority in the literacy area. Mrs Lloyd has taught in the Prep and 1/2 areas before teaching this year in literacy support. Mrs Lloyd is much admired for her extensive knowledge in writing and her connections with ALEA. We wish her a happy and healthy retirement.

Plastic Free/Recycle
In our canteen we are trying our best to be as Plastic Free and recycle as much as possible.
- We don’t use any plastic wrap anymore at all, we place our pre made toasted sandwiches into large Sistema tubs before they are toasted.
- We use metal spoons for our frozen yoghurt
- We use block cheese which we slice and grate which are placed in Sistema containers
- We use reusable bowls for our popcorn and cheese and biscuits
- Any items that can or need to be frozen (Ham, Chicken, Pineapple or Baked Beans) we freeze in Sistema reusable containers
- Our Cheese and Biscuits and Popcorn are sold in reusable bowls which are returned to the canteen
- We wash and dry yoghurt containers and lids to recycle
- We only use paper bags for our lunch orders
- We use a piece of foil to cover our pizza muffins before placing into a paper bag
- We place 4 Black Tubs in our eating areas so all our return items, bowls, spoons, yoghurt containers. They are returned after lunch to the canteen washed and put in appropriate places
- We have 4 Soft Plastic Bins around the eating areas, only soft plastic is placed in these bins. Our Waste Warriors empty the bins on Wednesdays and the soft plastic it taken to the appropriate deposit areas, Coles or Woolworths. The bins are washed and placed back in the playground eating areas
- We recycle everything that are one use items in the correct way
- We also compost our food waste in the school compost area
- We only offer wholemeal bread, rolls and wraps also wholemeal fruit loaf when available
Thank You
We would like to thank everyone that has supported our canteen this year. 2019 has been certainly been overwhelming. With the changes to our thinking about reusing, recycling and improving on our choice of the packaged items we buy, we have cut our soft plastic to minimal use. Also with our changes to our canteen menu, this has given us the opportunity to be now a GOLD rated canteen with the Tasmanian Canteen Association. We were fortunate to be awarded 1st prize in the Environmentally Friendly Canteen Association of Tasmania awards. So a big thank you to all students who use our soft plastic bins and to all the Waste Warriors for helping make this award happen.
I would also like to say a big thank you to the wonderful volunteers who come along each Thursday to help in the canteen. Without them the canteen wouldn’t be possible. There are still openings for more people to give some of their precious time to go onto our roster, even if it’s only once a year, it’s all worth it to see the smile on your children’s faces when you’re serving them. We have a lot of laughs together during the day.
Looking forward to what 2020 brings us . . . and a big thank you once again to everyone!
