From the Principal…..
This week is a very busy one at school with many students involved in active programs to improve their swimming and water safety skills. Children from grades 1 to 5 will all be enjoying opportunities to build skills and enjoyment in the water environment. As Tasmania is an island and swimming is such a social activity during the warmer weather, confidence in and around the water is a life-skill. Congratulations to all children who have shown the character qualities of courage, self-control and perseverance while learning and practising new skills in the water!
Perth Students Shine
On Sunday this week a large number of students will be presented with awards at the annual Tasmanian Science Talent Search presentation. Awards recognise students who placed first, second or third in each category or who received a merit or honourable mention. The number of awards recognise that science at PPS is a strong feature of classroom programs and is valued by students. Many thanks to Miss Dick for her continued support of this program.
Environmentally Friendly Canteen Award
Congratulations to Mrs Maher who has won Tasmania’s Environmentally Friendly Canteen award with her outstanding work to support the environment through her role in the canteen. Mrs Maher works with her helpers, the Waste Warriors and aligns this work to the Australian Curriculum. See further details later in this newsletter.
Guest Speaker in Assembly – Ms Meaghan Volker
Yesterday former Olympian rower and now engineer with VSJV, Meaghan Volker attended our assembly to speak with us about CREATIVITY. Meaghan told a story about her work as a project engineer on the highway bypass and the problem solving this requires. She talked about trying and not giving up. Meaghan also talked about trying to solve problems in many different ways rather than in the way which seems logical and straight forward – about ‘thinking outside the box’. She presented certificates to our students.
Esk Band Extravaganza
On Friday evening members of our Esk Band will be playing to a very large audience at the Albert Hall. This concert is the culmination of a year’s lessons and practice of their skills. It promises to be a very special evening when students can showcase their growing expertise and entertain the audience with a range of musical ensembles.
Clifford Craig Garden Fete
On Sunday our choir will be singing at the Clifford Craig Garden Fete and Open Garden. Congratulations to Mrs Butler and all members of the choir for accepting this opportunity to represent PPS in a community event during the weekend. The Garden Fete is open 10 – 4pm, with further details below.
Enrolments Open for 2020
You may have noticed some posts on our Facebook page for kinder enrolments for 2020. We are also accepting enrolments for students in all grade groups to join our highly successful school. You may have read about our student results which exceed Australian average results in three domains for grades 3 and grade 5 students. This is an outstanding result and shows that high-quality teaching over time means student learning is the real winner. Please forward this message to someone else nearby in your area and ask them to contact us to talk about joining our friendly and supportive school community.
Welcomes and Farewells
Welcome to Degan Lynch who joins 5-6LJ this week. Best wishes for a settled and productive learning time at PPS.

The girls earned selection through a trials day and then trained with the team over a number of weeks before competing at the gala day. Meleyah and Chelsea also earned selection in the carnival’s All-Star team. This is a honour that is well-deserved. We are proud of you both!
