Students Final Day |
From the Principal…..
Our ‘Recreation Day Public Holiday’ this week has provided an extra day for families to get together and for children and parents to enjoy doing the special things which every family love to do together. Recreation Day encourages families to explore the outdoor environments and to be active and exercise minds and bodies to build fitness and wellbeing. While students enjoyed the early start to the weekend with a student-free day on Friday, staff were working hard at school with a day of professional learning to add to our skills and knowledge. These days are critical to ensure that staff keep building their knowledge and understandings to ensure that we can be the very best possible teachers.
Hobart and Port Arthur Campers Return
Late into the afternoon last Wednesday, a large group of parents waited anxiously for the return of our campers after their three days and two nights away at camp. At last the buses arrived, and off stepped students, a group of teachers and their luggage . . . in their trademark ‘orderly fashion’!
Congratulations to all students who represented our school at such a high level and set an excellent standard for others to follow. You were outstanding ambassadors for PPS. Many thanks to teachers and staff for your amazing efforts to prepare such outstanding learning experience for students and to give up your own family time to spend with PPS learners. You certainly earned the extra day off on the long weekend! Thank you again, on behalf of all students and their families.
Congratulations Georgie and Logan
Last week it was an absolute pleasure to accompany parents and a group of staff to the Student Awards where Georgie and Logan were presented with awards following this year’s NAPLAN tests. The awards have been renamed this year, to better align with the DoE’s values – respect, aspiration, growth and courage. Our students received the following awards:
Georgie - Aspiration and Achievement
Logan - Growth.
Congratulations to both students on an outstanding effort.

Wellbeing continues as a theme at PPS during a busy start to Term 4. The annual Swimming and Water Safety Program for grades 3 – 5 students start in week 6 at Glen Dhu Pool. We are pleased to be able to offer a number of other swimming events including the NMPSSA Swimming Carnival and Grade 1 / 2 water orientation this term. The Schools Triathlon Challenge will be held in week 7, and again we have many students expressing interest in this exciting, optional activity.
Transition activities for grade six students
A very busy calendar of events has been planned for our grade 6 students as they spend their last 6 weeks at PPS. Their teachers have a carefully planned list of tasks for each student to complete, and are checking off each task. There are a number of traditional celebrations held at the end of the school year for grade 6 students. Of course we expect that all our students will meet the high-level behaviour expectations which apply to these events.
Conversations for 2020
Several weeks ago we conducted a thorough process to gain information from parents, staff and students about what we do well and how we can improve. This has given us some clear information about our priorities moving forward. Please talk with your School Association representatives, Mel Lucas, Mel Biffin, Jacqui Dalton, Erin Longmore, Jane Boyer, Kelly Barrett or with a leadership team member if you have ideas to contribute.
School Association BINGO Night
On Friday this week our School Association Fundraising Group have organised a BINGO Night to raise funds for our school. We look forward to seeing many parents there to join in the fun and to support the efforts of the organising committee. Many thanks to the fundraising group for their work in organising and securing sponsorship for this event. All funds raised add to resources and programs we can offer at Perth Primary School.
Assembly Guest Speaker – Minister Guy Barnett
This week we welcomed Minister Guy Barnett to our assembly to speak with us about perseverance. Minister Barnett told a personal story of his own journey with Type 1 Diabetes. He talked about the importance of perseverance for success at school and in later life. Many of our speakers have chosen PERSEVERANCE because Grit and that quality to keep trying is so critically important for success. The speakers have used many different examples to show how trying and never giving up makes such a difference in their lives.
Minister Barnett presented certificates to our students who have been recognised for a high-level of perseverance.
Our next guest speaker will be former Olympian Meaghan Volker, who now works as an engineer at VSJV. Meaghan will talk about Creativity and the important role this has played in her life. Creativity is one of the PPS values.
Profiles on Perth

This week’s profile features the Chairperson of our School Association, Melissa Lucas, affectionately known as Mel by most of us. Mel has been associated with the School Association, or parent group for many years, well before her own children started school. She was introduced to the parent group by a friend and neighbour whose children have since moved onto KMHS. Mel started helping with a fair in 2008. She gives her time freely to support the work of the school so that all children can benefit from improved educational opportunities the School Association works to provide. Mel expresses gratitude for the efforts of those who work hard for students needs and interests and is full of praise for those who strive to make PPS the best school it can be.
Please contact Mel at school if you’d like to be involved or make a contribution to the school association.
