From the Principal…..
Moderation Day on Friday this week will be an opportunity for teachers to work with our Connect 6 colleagues during the afternoon session to ‘moderate’ our assessments of students’ reading progress. Moderation is important so that we are confident in the ratings we assign to all students. With the current A – E rating scale, it is most important that an A in our school is equivalent to an A at Punchbowl and an A at Penguin, as well as at Port Sorell, Prospect and Port Arthur. This builds confidence in the reporting process for parents and teachers who need to know that they have the same expectations as their colleagues.
During the morning session we will work to progress our understandings and moderation of writing in line with our School Improvement Plan which identifies both writing and reading as key priorities during 2019. Please talk with me or other members of the leadership team if you would like further details of our professional learning agenda on the Friday.
Building a Highly Skilled Workforce to Support Student Learning
Professional learning days, extra training, online courses, additional study and extra qualifications are all part of our mission to bring a highly trained and skilled teaching team and additional workforce to support students at our school. Last week we hosted a visit from the Inclusion & Diversity Services Team who worked with several of our staff team to look over some of our Individual Learning Plans for students who benefit from differentiated learning adjustments. Megan Cavanagh, State Manager of Disability Services, commented on the high quality of learning plans examined during the day. She was most impressed with the work of our Support Team, Mrs Clements and Mrs Chandler. I know our students and their families are most grateful to all members of our staff for their thorough work.
Keeping Students Safe
Last week we held several practices or ‘drills’ of our fire and evacuation procedures to ensure that everyone on our site knows exactly what to do in the case of an emergency. We will also practice for a lockdown this week. Again this is ‘just in case’. We all understand that it is better to have thought about what to do in an emergency and to practice the steps so that we are well-rehearsed. Student safety is our first priority as learning cannot happen unless students feel safe and secure.
New Rubber Surface
Last week workers from Island Recreation came to PPS to install a new rubber surface outside the C Block classrooms. The new surface looks great and will be a fabulous addition to the Early Childhood playground which already adjoins those classrooms. This project means that students can sit more comfortably directly on the surface while they are working, eating and playing. Come and have a look for yourself!
NAPLAN On-Line
Northern Midlands Athletics Carnival
Several weeks ago a team of 29 students from grades 3 – 6 travelled to St Leonards Athletics Centre to compete against other schools in the Northern Midlands Athletics Carnival. Students report a day filled with fun, great competition and lots of close race results. But more importantly, the messages about our students and the way they represented our school have been most pleasing. Every student showed the exemplary behaviours expected of a team member representing our school. As well as that, students were able to display many of the character qualities we speak to them about often – optimism, enthusiasm, gratitude, self-control, social intelligence and perseverance.
Farewells and Welcomes
We say farewell to Valentino, Sunni, Kalarni and Lochie and their families. Best wishes for your new schools.
