From the Principal…..

Last week I attended the ‘Together We Inspire’ Conference with many leaders in Tasmanian education. I heard from inspiring speakers Jane Caro and Tracey Izard about directions in public education in Australia as well as several of the Ambassadors of 150 years of public education in Tasmania. It was a most rewarding, inspiring and exhilarating few days to be thinking further about our work at PPS. Considering what we have achieved so far and thinking about our next level of work to ensure students at our school continue to progress with their learning is an essential next step for us at Perth Primary School.

Guest Speaker at Assembly – Taylah Purton

This week we welcomed Taylah Purton to our assembly. Taylah is a cricketer, student and business owner who has recently been selected to play in the elite women’s North Hobart team in the Premier League. Taylah talked about the GRIT needed to set personal goals and work towards personal dreams. She shared her own story about her cricket batting position to connect with many students which helped them understand how working hard to reach a milestone gives enormous personal satisfaction.

Footy Colours Day

On Friday this week the Student Cabinet and Parliament will be hosting a Footy Colours Day as a fundraiser for Beyond Blue. This charity was chosen as wellbeing is one of our school priorities and students are becoming much more aware of social and emotional wellbeing and its connection to mental health for everyone. All members of our school community are invited to wear the colours of their favourite football or other sports team and to bring a gold coin donation in support of Beyond Blue. Student Leaders will collect donations on Friday morning.

Review of National Funding Arangements for Kindergartens – survey for parents.

An independent review (the Review) is being conducted into the national funding arrangements that support access by all children in Australia to 600 hours per year of quality early childhood education in the year before full-time school.

For Tasmania this is our Kindergarten year. Since 2008, the Australian Government’s UANP funding has supported an increase to 15 hours per week of Kindergarten in Tasmania, however the future of national funding is uncertain beyond 2020.

Tasmania has a long and proud history of providing free access to quality early learning and the Tasmanian Government has made substantial investments to support and expand this provision.

It is important that the success of Kindergarten in Tasmania is clearly understood in this national process and we encourage the Tasmanian education community, including parents, teachers, and leaders to participate in the review.

How you have your say:

  1. Complete the survey – online survey
  2. Write a public submission which closes at 11.59pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) 6 October 2019. You can email your submission to UANPReview@NousGroup.com.au

Cup of Tea for Free

We are already planning for the Student-free day in week 3 of next term, when we will spend time planning and talking about what we’ve been doing well, what we can improve, and what we need to start doing to improve student learning at PPS. To help us with this work, we’d like to hear from a number of parents to talk to us about your child’s learning experiences. I’ll be asking for a number of parents to join me or another member of staff for a ‘cuppa’ and a chat! I hope you’ll have time to join us! We will also be talking with all members of staff and representative students as well. This will provide useful information to guide our Annual Review and School Improvement Plan.

Organisation for 2020

We have begun our planning for 2020 and are underway with organisation for next year. It is important that our information is accurate, so please contact the office if your enrolment status will change for next year. We would appreciate you letting neighbours and other friends know that now is the time to contact our office for enrolment details. Thank you in advance. We take our placement of students into class groups very seriously. Teachers know their students well and think about what is best for children’s deep and connected learning, happy playing, and getting along well with others. Please contact me in writing if you have information of an educational basis which is not known by the school if this might impact upon your child’s class placement. Requests for particular teachers cannot be considered.

Profile on Perth - Casey

Casey is a senior leader and a model student at PPS. She always shows the character qualities to which we aspire at school as well as our values of respect, courage, aspiration, growth and creativity. Casey is a committed learner, friend and talented sports person who played an important role as goal shooter in the recent Country Gold carnival last week. Casey is humble and shows humility in all interactions at school. Recently Casey donated lengths of her hair to the Variety Charity which donated it to someone who doesn’t have hair of their own. Casey had not ever cut her hair, only had it trimmed. She had the idea of raising money and donating her hair for charity several years ago and had to keep growing it to get to the required length of 35.5 cm in length. “I had so much hair and I didn’t really need it. It felt very good to me that I was giving a part of myself to someone else to benefit from . . . .”
