From the Principal…..
You may have heard mention of NAPLAN results in the media in result days. Preliminary results have been available to schools during the past few days and we are delighted with our students’ results. Gain data and school results may change, so further information about school-wide data will be available once results are confirmed. Student Reports for 2019 from ACARA will be available for collection by parents from the office from this afternoon. Any reports not collected by the end of term will be posted to home addresses.
MYTERN Mentors
Several weeks ago we hosted a visit from Dr Jane Foster – MYTERN. Jane was leading a session for educators and parents about MYTERN and its benefits in school and home environments. Jane shared her new resources with the group and talked about the ‘pulse of life’ – that it’s natural and normal for emotions to have their ups and downs. Jane helped us to understand that helping children to manage things like the ups and downs of friendships and being able to manage when things don’t turn out the way they want is part of being emotionally healthy and resilient. Being in control, regardless of the road you’re travelling and the emotion you’re feeling, is the first step to emotional health, resilience and wellbeing.
Kiss and Drop Zone
Several years ago the Northern Midlands Council realigned the Fore Street entrance to the school to ease safety concerns, ease traffic flow and help to mitigate parking problems near the school entrance. The turning circle was designed as a ‘Kiss and Drop’ Zone, so that cars could stop briefly for 10 seconds for students to alight, then keep driving around the circle and leave the area. The circle has not been used in this way, and traffic and parking remain ‘bottleneck’ problems at the start and end of the day. At times we will have a teacher on duty to trial using the Kiss and Drop Zone as it was intended. The teacher will monitor traffic flow and let parents know that stopping briefly on the curve is the preferred way to drop children close to the gate. Of course parents who like to walk their children into classrooms in the mornings will still need to find a parking space further along Fore Street.
Guest Speaker at Assembly
On Tuesday it was a pleasure to welcome Bob Bramley to our school.
Bob is the young pilot who flew solo around Australia in April this year. He is just 17 years old, and still too young to drive himself from his home on the NW Coast of Tasmania to PPS. Yet he had the courage to fly a light plane, by himself, from Devonport, all the way around Australia, then circum-navigated Tasmania, before landing back in Devonport. Bob was generous with his time and spoke in several classes before speaking at our assembly. He talked with students about courage and gratitude, and encouraged them to set their own goals and strive to achieve them.
Profile on Perth
This week I am introducing a new segment in the newsletter to feature a student or member of our school community who is remarkable or has achieved special results. It’s a way to celebrate and acknowledge the people and achievements that make our community so unique.
This week’s feature student is:
Payton – Grade 2-3
When Payton was just 5 years old she decided she wanted to help her cousin Skyla, who had been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. In that year, she read 65 picture books and raised $821 for 65 Roses Challenge. That’s the charity which supports people with Cystic Fibrosis.
Payton said, “I started my fundraising because I wanted to help my cousin.
Then I started to like it so I kept going and it feels good because you are helping other people.”
Payton has been involved each year since then, raising a total of $3484.08.
Payton likes learning and playing at PPS. We play happily together because we all get along.
And she is grateful that she is healthy.
“I want other people to have the chance to be healthy too, that’s why I fundraise . . . because there’s no cure for Cystic Fibrosis. But money might help with research to find one.
I want my cousin to be healthy just like me.”
Bus List Protocols
Last week every student who catches the bus to or from school would have brought home a Bus User Agreement. This outlines the safe user agreement for catching the bus to and from school so that students arrive at school or home safe and happy. The agreement outlines ‘Yes and No Behaviours’ for the safety of the driver and the comfort and happiness of everyone on the bus.
Every student catching the bus is required to line up and wait for the duty teacher to call their name. Children catching the bus should have their names at the office so that we have an exact indication of which students will be travelling by bus each day. Please send a message in writing, to indicate any changes to your child’s normal travel arrangements so that we can make this change on the bus list. Thank you for your co-operation.
Cubby House in Kindergarten
Last Monday there was much excitement in our kindergarten playground when children arrived to find a fabulous cubbyhouse had been delivered to their play space. The cubby has been donated by Mrs Ellie Dyson, with the assistance of Mrs Sarah Addicoat. Many children will gain enormous pleasure and delight from playing in the cubby. Thank you so much on behalf of them all!
Road Safety Reminder
Recently we have received calls to our general office about several PPS students crossing roads in a manner which has been unsafe, or even dangerous. We have spoken with students in class and at assembly, but reminders from parents will also be helpful. Please talk with your child to ensure that they know the way to cross the road safely. This week representatives from the RACT delivered road safety messages to some classes.
Welcomes and Farewells
