From the Principal…..
Last week we were delighted to see so many parents, friends and extended family members join us to celebrate Book Week and the importance of reading.
A large and appreciative crowd joined our special celebration assembly to hear about the Children’s Book Council awards and the winning books in each of the categories for this year. Children came dressed as their favourite book characters or brought along a connection to their favourite story showing the importance of reading for meaning.
Many parents joined their child and teachers in open classrooms after assembly to spend time playing games and joining learning activities. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us to help make this such a special Book Week celebration. We certainly understand that competing priorities mean not everyone can attend every event we hold at school.
New Fencing in Fore Street
Recently we have been discussing ways to provide more structure and engaging play opportunities in our playground for students so that they are engaged in age-appropriate play during break times. As a result, the fence at the Fore Street entrance to the school will be moved slightly to create a new play space for early childhood children. The School Association has donated $5,000 towards the creation of the play space, which will include ‘loose parts’, some large rocks and tyres, sand and a number of reels and pallets. The playground will be changeable so that there is variety to encourage creative and co-operative play.
Student Leadership Initiative
During recent Student Cabinet and Parliament meetings our student leaders have been discussing changes to the incentive programs which help to keep students on track and reward and motivate students who follow the expectations at Perth Primary School. We have been discussing the introduction of a ‘Token Shop’ as a concept, where students could earn tokens or tickets as rewards and save them to spend at the ‘Token Shop’. There appears to be broad support for this concept and further work is being done to finalise the details of how this will work.
The Token Shop will replace other incentives such as the icy pole draw and the Strive for Five draw in assemblies.
North Melbourne Football Clinic
Yesterday players from the North Melbourne Football Club visited us to conduct sessions with our grade 3 / 4 students. Daria Bannister from the club organised sessions for children on our oval to develop skills and ball handling. It seems that everyone had a great time!
Mobile Phones in Primary Schools
The DoE in Tasmania is currently working to develop a State-wide policy regarding mobile phones in primary schools. In the meantime, please be reminded that our ICT agreement and policy requires that all mobile phones are signed into the office each morning on arrival and left there for the whole day. Students can collect their mobile devices as they leave. Only students who need a mobile for emergency reasons should bring a phone to school.
School Satisfaction Survey
Parent Satisfaction Survey invitations were distributed to each family this afternoon. Please complete the survey either online, or by filling in the paper version and returning the copy to the school office where it will be entered for you. Thank you for providing feedback to help us improve what we do to provide the best quality education for your child.
Student Wellbeing Census
Parents and Carers of students in Year 4 – 6
The wellbeing of our students is important to us.
To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in Year/s 4–6 at Perth Primary School will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.
The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
The details for the survey are:
When: |
29th – 30th August |
Who: |
Grade 4 – 6 students |
What do I need to do: |
You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way. |
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4 – 6 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact your child’s teacher or the office.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
Let’s Ride Returns
Today the Let’s Ride program returned for grade two students who enjoyed their first session with instructor, Ian Loft. Mr Loft visits many schools and is an accredited cycling coach. Children will be involved in five weekly sessions, learning about bike safety as well as learning to ride. All the sessions are held on Wednesdays on school property and adjoining land. The Let’s Ride program is made available through Sporting Schools Australia funding.
Guest Speaker in Assembly
This week’s guest speaker in assembly was our very own Steve Muir, who spoke about the perseverance required to achieve all the amazing physical feats which he seems to enjoy! Steve spoke with the assembly about how he manages his work, family and training regime and what keeps him ‘balanced’. His love of challenge – the physical sorts of challenge which inspire him and require lots of perseverance are an inspiration to others. Steve talked about, and demonstrates, lots of the character qualities which are important for success in life – optimism, enthusiasm, perseverance, social intelligence, self-control, gratitude and curiosity.
Changes in our Administration Team
Once again we will have some further changes to our administration team as we welcome back Leanne Dunn from long service leave next week. Mrs Dunn will return working Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We are pleased to announce Mrs Jo Carr has been appointed as Acting School Business Manager on Thursday and Fridays until the end of the year.
Bike Users’ Agreement
Children who ride, scoot and ride skateboards to and from school should have brought a Bike Users’ Agreement home to complete with parents this week. This agreement outlines each students’ responsibilities in following safe riding and behaviours in keeping themselves and others safe on school grounds and in the local neighbourhood. Please ask your child about this if you haven’t seen it. Many thanks for talking about safe riding and scooting to help keep everyone safe in the school ground and on our roads and footpaths.
Welcomes and Farewells
This week we farewelled Mrs Wyatte as she leaves for some time to focus on family responsibilities. Mrs Wyatte will return later next year.
Farewell to Sylvia Goldspink who has worked with us as Acting SBM during the past few months and returns to her own position at Brooks High School. Many thanks for your excellent work and support of our students and staff at PPS.
