From the Principal…..
On the weekend I read an article written by Jackie French, the well-known Australian author. She talked about the importance of books in children’s lives. But she wasn’t just talking about any books. Jacky argues that children need the right books to be inspired and engaged as readers, and that the benefits of reading are so important that every adult should become a mentor to help children access books with which they can connect and engage.
Jacky states - Young people + right book + adult who can teach them how to find it = reader with empathy, knowledge and understanding.
Jacky goes on to remind us that kids need books. And we as a society need our children to love books, not just tolerate them in the intervals between sport and video games. Books show us who we are, have been and can be. Humans are a species connected and inspired by stories.
“MRI studies show that the brain almost goes into a daze watching a screen. But a book must be imagined. Every voice, every scene . . . . reading is essentially bodybuilding for the brain” (Jacky French, June 2019).
Jacky’s article was a timely connection to our concerns about screen time and the negative influences of video games and tv characters which influence children’s play in our school grounds.
We remind children everyday about our ‘hands-off’ messages so that everyone can learn deeply, play happily and get along well together.
Assembly Guest Speaker – Mrs Kelly Heathcote
Mrs Kelly Heathcote, former principal of Norwood Primary School, was our guest speaker in assembly yesterday and talked with us about self-control. She talked about the importance of self-control in setting up for success now and in the future. Mrs Heathcote gave examples to help children understand the significance of self-control in their own lives and how developing self-control is most worthwhile, no matter how long it takes or how hard it seems the message about listening carefully and collaborating or negotiating with other was also timely. Congratulations to children acknowledged for their self-control, and also to students who have set themselves a goal to improve their own self-control and other important character qualities.
The guest speaker at next assembly will be Lauren Colson. Lauren will feature as 'Matilda' in Launceston College's Stage Production - Matilda. Lauren will talk about Courage.
RACT Road Safety Awareness
As part of our commitment to student safety the RACT Road Safety program has been organised for later this term. This program will be delivered in week 8 to students in 2-3B, 2-3C, 3-4 JL and 4-5 D. This will particularly target the large number of students who walk, ride and scoot to school.
MYLP Instructional Model Launch
In several weeks’ time teachers from PPS will be working with their Connect 6 partners to celebrate the launch of the Instructional Models in all Connect 6 schools. This work recognises significant professional learning across our schools. Our Instructional Model is displayed in all classrooms and describes quality teaching and learning. All teachers can talk to the model. Our Literacy Coach, Kate Adams, will share some quality reading resources and strategies with other schools.
Let’s Ride
Starting in Week 4, the Let’s Ride program will return for children in grade 2. This popular program is funded by Sporting Schools Australia. It will be held at school on Wednesdays. All grade 2 children will be involved.
Congratulations Indy
Congratulations to Indy who travelled to Victoria during the recent holiday break with her family to compete in the Victorian Championships for BMX racing. Last month Indy was selected in the Australian team called Aussie Tuff Gurlz. She is the only Tasmanian representative. Indy holds several titles and loves racing BMX. In November she will travel back to Melbourne for the Victorian titles and try for another title. Indy loves her sport and the thrill of competing but most of all, she loves the friendships she has made both on and off the track.
Congratulations Indy and best wishes for your next challenges!
Welcomes and Farewells
Welcome to Tommy, joining Kinder A from St Marys. Welcome to Mrs Steph Forrester, teaching Prep-1 FW.
Farewell to Kaleb, Monieka and their family as they move to a new home in Westbury. Best wishes at your new school.

Country Gold
Congratulations to Chelsea, Meleyah and Monieka on being selected in the NMPSSA Girls Football Team. To earn selection the girls took part in a selection trial day last Friday and will now take part in the official WAFL Country Gold Carnival later this term. Well done we are very proud of your efforts!
Good Luck to all our grade 5/6 students who have been nominated to take part in this Friday’s selection matches for football, netball, soccer and hockey. To gain a nomination students must have demonstrated an appropriate level of effort, skill, game sense and fair play during last term’s NMPSSA Winter Sports Roster.
Congratulations and all the best.
