From the Principal…..
Last week I was clearly reminded about the wonderful, supportive nature of our school community when an incident occurred in the front carpark at pick-up time. Many parents immediately offered their help, many staff members were also involved in assisting and together members of our school community ensured that a swift resolution was found. Fortunately, the incident was resolved without injury and everyone was safe. It is times like these that Perth’s friendly, caring and inclusive school culture is clearly on display. Thank you to everyone who was there and who offered their help, time and assistance.
Volunteers in School Canteen
Another example of our school culture in action was the number of volunteers who came to the rescue to assist in our school canteen. Last week Jan Maher was unable to come to work as usual but thanks to volunteers all school lunches and other services continued without disruption. Many thanks to all volunteers in our school community who help to make Perth Primary School such a vibrant and supportive school where children’s learning comes first.
Student Safety – Fairtlough Street
Following an incident in the carpark in Fairtlough Street last week we have introduced some changes to help prioritise student safety. Students should enter and leave school via the path along Fairtlough Street or along the pathway leading to the Childcare centre. Students should only walk through the carpark when they are accompanied by an adult. On Friday I met with Jonathon Galbraith - Northern Midlands Council Engineering Officer to discuss realigning the carpark and parking arrangements at the front of the school in line with student safety requirements. Some changes will be made in the near future.
Sustainability Leaders Speak on ABC Radio
On Thursday Baxter and Ava visited the ABC Studio in Launceston where they were interviewed about our school’s initiative to recycle, re-use and reduce our waste to support environmental awareness. Our two Sustainability Leaders were chosen to talk about our whole-school effort and about what they and other students have been doing to become more environmentally conscious. Baxter and Ava were joined by students from another primary school as part of Plastic-free July. We look forward to hearing their messages. Congratulations for representing PPS so well. The interviews will be played on ABC radio throughout July.
Wayne Craig Visits PPS
On Monday this week Wayne Craig visited our school to gain a greater perspective about our school context. Wayne has a long history of working in schools across Australia and internationally and is an expert in school improvement. Connect 6 Board of Principals is working with Wayne on a Collaborative Guided Inquiry to further investigate the concepts of powerful learning and curiosity. These are the elements of his articles and research. Wayne visited classrooms and talked with students and staff.
Challenge Day at KMHS
Last week all grade five and six students travelled to Kings Meadows High School for their annual Challenge Day. This is part of their transition program where students experienced a day as a grade seven student, attending classes and meeting with teachers and other students. Students were most positive about their day and were particularly keen about their time spent in the Science lab! Please talk with your child’s teacher if you have further questions.
Guest Speaker in Assembly
Our guest speaker series continued this week with former student, Kate Dakin, as this week’s guest. Kate spoke with us about the value of ASPIRATION. This value fitted very well with the end-of-term awards for excellence in English and Mathematics which were presented to two students from each class. ASPIRATION is about setting a goal to do your best at something, a goal or objective that is strongly desired: The definition of an aspiration is a desire or ambition for which someone is motivated to work very hard
Kate shared a story about her own aspiration of becoming an actor and how that has changed over time to help children understand the concept of ASPIRATION. This was just perfect for the audience and helped everyone to understand the concept much more clearly.
The next guest speaker will be former NPS Principal, Kelly Heathcote.
Pyjama Day
Tomorrow the Student Cabinet and Parliament will be hosting their first fundraising effort for this year to raise money for Give Me 5 for Kids. This money goes towards the LGH Kids Ward. This is a particularly relevant charity to receive our support at this time as we have several children within our own school community who have recently been hospitalised or received specialist hospital care. As parents, we never know when our own children will need the services provided by the specialists and wonderful support staff at the LGH Children’s Ward. Please give generously to this worthy cause.
