From the Principal…..
Recently I’ve had the great privilege of reading the mid-year reports for all children at our school. These reports will go home with students on Friday and will form the basis of parent / teacher conversations about student progress next week. It has been exciting to read of progress in academic and social areas and to learn of goals to support further progress. We know you will celebrate your child’s strengths with them as well as talking about what they hope to achieve next in their learning. When children feel empowered and have ownership as part of the learning process they achieve even more.
Staffing Changes
Starting this week, we have some staffing changes to cover Mrs Clements position during her Long Service Leave. Mrs Clements will be away for five school weeks and will return at the beginning of week 3 in Term 3. During her absence Mrs Chandler has been appointed as Acting AST. We wish Mrs Clements a very happy and safe time away from work. For the remainder of this term, Ms Lovell will teach fulltime on 5-6 LJ, while Mr Johnson attends to school wide duties during this time.
Structured Playground Changes
Last week we introduced some changes to the areas of our playground where children from different grades can play. These changes have come about as a way to promote more successful play opportunities for more students and in response to feedback from some parents. In addition, we are continuing to explore some additional opportunities of high interest which provide structure and creative problem solving, yet are safe and inexpensive.
Parent / Teacher Meetings
Mid-year reports go home on Friday this week and these form the basis of our parent / teacher meetings next week. We hope that the families of every child will take up the opportunity to talk with their child’s teacher about progress and learning. We know that when we work together, children’s progress and achievements are enhanced. Appointments for meeting times are online. Please contact the office if you have questions about making an appointment.
Perseverance – Assembly Presentation
Our guest speaker in assembly today was former student, Jayden Eldershaw. Jayden is a State and National representative in athletics, and specialises in high jump. He spoke to us about perseverance (also known as GRIT) and told a personal story about persevering to achieve at the very top level of his chosen sporting event. Thanks to Jayden and congratulations to all students who were recognised for their perseverance in this week’s assembly.
Our next assembly will focus on the DoE and PPS value of ASPIRATION. Our guest speaker will be former student Kate Dakin.
Transition Plans for 2020
Although 2020 seems a long way off, transition planning is already underway to support the successful move to secondary schools. As part of Connect 6, we work closely with our colleague schools to ensure we all offer the same experiences for students who will attend Kings Meadows High School. Some of our students will also choose to attend Cressy District High School and they are also organised for transition at this early stage of the year, with visits and events organised for the near future. Please talk with your child’s Grade 6 teacher for further details if you have any questions.
Social and Emotional Regulation
Earlier this year we started to explore concepts with some students and classes which are helping children to explain their feelings and regulate their emotions. We plan that all students are able to self-regulate and are independent in managing their feelings and emotions at all times. Being able to talk through situations when feeling distressed, angry or frustrated to seek and enact a solution in a calm and cool manner is our goal. Many students are already independent in their ability to achieve this and can use the language of Mytern very well to explain their emotions and personal emotional tools. Zones of Regulation compliments this work and will be an addition to this work to assist in other ways.
Welcomes and Farewells
Welcome to our Acting SBM Sylvia Goldspink, who joins our PPS team from Brooks High School. Please introduce yourself to Sylvia next time you visit the school office.
Farewell to Christian, Trisha and Charlie who are relocating with their family to South Australia. Best wishes in your new adventure!

Challenge Day is an opportunity for our Connect 6 Primary Schools including Punchbowl, Norwood and other students known to be transitioning to KMHS to visit our school. The challenge is an inter class competition to familiarise students with our school-wide ROCKS expectations. KMHS Transition Leaders (Grade 7 2019) will accompany students with their Primary School Teachers to all lessons. KMHS host teachers will facilitate 40min lessons and provide feedback about student learning behaviours against the ROCKS learning behaviours. At the end of the day certificates will be awarded to the group that received the highest points.
For Primary School Families
Challenge Day is designed as a ‘taster’ day for students. Your child will stay within their school group and experience many of the things Kings Meadows High School (KMHS) has to offer. The day is designed around a number of curriculum-based challenges, including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Robotics, English, Health & Physical Education, Arts & Technologies.
Teachers from KMHS will be supervising the students for the day together with visiting staff from Primary School. Students are asked to meet on the grassed area at the front of our school (near the school canteen) by 9:20am. Transition Leaders will direct all students to our meeting space that will be used as the base for the day including the storage school bags.
There will be an assembly prior to moving to the first Challenge Day class at 9:40am. The transition leaders will support students throughout the day.
KMHS will provide a BBQ lunch for students. Those that would prefer not to eat a sausage in bread are welcome to bring their own lunch or bring money to purchase food from our school canteen.
Participating students will experience a typical Grade 7 day at High School.
Students will need to remember the following:
- to wear their primary school physical education uniform
- bring recess and a drink from home or bring money to purchase from our school canteen (if not partaking in the BBQ provided)
- bring a pen or pencil
The day will conclude at 2:15 with time for students to travel back to school for normal home time routines. For those travelling home with older siblings or being picked up from KMHS we will wait with students until the 2:50pm end of the day school bell and then take them to the canteen to meet family members.
