From the Principal…..
Last week our kindergarten classes walked to the Tasmanian Honey Factory for a visit and to learn about bees and honey. Listening to children’s excitement, questions and conversation was a clear reminder of the role curiosity plays in learning and language development. There were questions, explanations, descriptions, hypotheses, predictions and a range of scientific terms . . . all from 4 year olds! This reminds us about the importance of first-hand experiences to extend and encourage language development, understanding and curiosity and the role parents, carers and families play as each child’s first educators and language teachers. Talking with your child about what they see and do sets them up for success at school and in later life.
Assembly
Yesterday we were delighted to welcome special guest, Annah Fromberg, ABC journalist and news presenter, to our assembly to speak about enthusiasm. Annah talked with us about her enthusiasm for her job as a journalist and told students about how she first landed her position at the ABC after being a volunteer. Our next guest presenter in assembly will speak about perseverance. We hope you can join us to hear these important message for success at school and in later life. Congratulations to all students presented with certificates this week.
Positive Partnerships with Parents
Working with our parents and community members means amazing things are possible for students and their learning. It is wonderful to walk around our school grounds and talk with parents each day about a range of matters which are important and to work with families as together we help to address matters, large and small to help students and their learning success. Education is a partnership and together we achieve far more. We are working to help every child to be their very best with everything they do – in their learning, playing happily and getting along with others in a co-operative and successful manner. Please start each afternoon’s conversation with your child by asking them to share a favourite part of their day or to tell you about something they enjoyed at school. When we look for the positives, we will hear about the good things. If we always focus on the negatives, a cycle of negativity can become established which is difficult to break.
Student Wellbeing
One of our school-wide priorities at PPS is wellbeing and our work in this area is deeply embedded across all aspects of our school culture. Our priority includes social, emotional and physical wellbeing and our lens includes the wellbeing of all members of our school community. We have worked closely with Dr Jane Foster to help us embed the language and concepts of Mytern across our school community and to help us understand that happiness all the time is an unrealistic goal for anyone, including children.
The number of young people in Australia with diagnosed mental health issues has reached record high numbers and is at alarmingly high levels. There are many causes, but this is partly due to the influence of social media, and partly because young people struggle to deal with disappointments.
Our focus in both the playground and in learning environments is helping children to stay ‘in control’ whether they are travelling on red or green roads, and helping students to understand that we all experience a broad range of emotions, or travel a range of roads everyday. Experiencing happiness is also knowing what sadness and disappointment feel like, and these are natural and normal human emotions.
Student Safety – Lockdowns - Drill
As part of our focus on student safety we practise a range of drills for fire, evacuation and lockdown to ensure that everyone on our site knows what to do in the case of a real emergency. To further refine our procedures, we will send a message on sms to all registered mobile phone contact numbers listed as contact number 1, to alert them to a drill which will happen this Friday. Please pass this message amongst your friends as we are aware that many parents do not read the newsletter thoroughly. We do not want to cause panic within the school community. We are working hard to put thorough and carefully considered protocols in place which are tested and refined in case there is ever a need to use them. Thank you for your thoughtful assistance.
Cross Country – An Event requiring GRIT
It was a delight to welcome so many members of our school community to our beautiful oval on the afternoon of our Cross Country to encourage and congratulate students as they participated in the annual PPS cross country events. From kindergarten to grade 6, children were eager to participate and to earn valuable points for their House. Team spirit was clearly on display in the house groups in the middle of the oval, where chanting and cheering could be heard loudly. The many, many spectators who came were treated to warm sunshine and perfect weather for running. The participants didn’t disappoint - with every child giving their very best efforts. Distance running requires energy, determination, optimism, enthusiasm and GRIT (also known as perseverance). Congratulations to everyone who participated, particularly to students who paced themselves well to win or place in their events. See further results later.
Changes in our Office
From next week Leanne Dunn, our School Business Manager, will take some well-earned long service leave and will be away until the middle of next term. We are waiting for confirmation from DoE to announce the name of her replacement. We hope Leanne enjoys her time away and returns in late Term 3 refreshed and ready for the busy end to the school year. Best wishes for your leave Leanne!
