Last day of Term 2

From the Principal…..

During the past two weeks students at PPS, just like students in grades 3,5,7 and 9 in every other Australian school, have been involved in NAPLAN tests. This is to show their understandings and skills in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. Unlike many other schools, our students have not experienced major disruptions to the testing process, with only minor connectivity issues reported at our site. I have been immensely proud of the way students have been focused and resilient, and have shown the character qualities which we have talked about as important for success – optimism, enthusiasm, perseverance, self-control, curiosity, gratitude and social intelligence. A huge thank you must go to Ben Johnson whose planning and trouble-shooting has meant that our NAPLAN sessions for students have been relatively smooth. Results from this year’s tests will be available later in the year, with information available to parents once it arrives at school. On Monday, the Minister for Education, Hon Jeremy Rockcliff, announced that Tasmanian students would not resit tests in other schools where there have been interruptions to testing sessions.

Assembly Guest Speaker

Yesterday we were privileged to welcome Southern Cross TV News reader Jo Palmer as our assembly guest speaker. Jo talked with us about Optimism and the importance of always having a positive attitude. She shared a personal story to help students understand the concept of Optimism. Jo presented certificates linked to Optimism for students as part of our assembly.

Next assembly will be hosted by Prep-1 A.  Annah Fromberg, ABC News, will be the guest speaker. Annah will speak about Enthusiasm. Assembly will start at 2pm.

Walk Safely to School Day

Last Friday was National Walk Safely to School Day. It was a wonderful healthy way for many of our students and families to start the day walking to school. Thank you to our student leaders who were at the entrances to school to provide stickers to everyone who participated and to teachers and parents who walked with students. Walking is one of the healthy habits which is promoted as part of our Move Well Eat Well program at PPS.

Staffing Changes

Recently we have been working to organise replacement teacher assistants for several members of our team who will be absent for some time. Deb Van Est is away for a few weeks now, and will also be absent for all of Term 3. Martina McIntyre is away for the rest of this term and we wish her a speedy recovery. Jan Maher will assist in the library during Mrs McIntyre’s absence.

Election Day Fundraising

During a busy weekend where the nation’s eyes were focused on the election, the 5/6 fundraising group managed to raise a very healthy total towards the 5/6 camp which is planned for October this year. Congratulations to co-ordinator, Kristy Springer and other helpers who worked effectively as a team to ensure that the cake stall, BBQ and wood raffle were all well supported by members of the Perth community. An excellent total of $2155 was raised to assist families in their costs towards this year’s camp. Congratulations to all helpers and many thanks to all sponsors for your generous support.

I am thrilled to announce we made a total profit of $2155! Unbelievably pleased and proud to know what we can achieve when we work together as a team. Top job everyone! Community News……

Work is continuing on the implementation of the new Educational Adjustments funding model for students with disability in Tasmanian Government schools, which will deliver funding to schools from 2020.

The new Educational Adjustments approach will support inclusive practice in schools and align supports to the educational adjustments teachers make in the classroom to assist students with disability access, participate and engage in quality learning programs.

To support this critical work we have now launched a new website which provides important information and resources for schools and parents on this new approach.

Please visit the website at Educational Adjustments.

Schools are encouraged to share this site with their teaching staff, parents and families.

You are welcome to share a copy of the Facebook post, which was distributed on the DoE facebook page last Thursday – the weblink is:

We are also undertaking state-wide consultation forums with parents and key stakeholder groups during Term 2. Please encourage your families to attend a forum if they are seeking further information. Details about the forums are available via Educational Adjustments.
