From the Principal…..
During the April holiday break I had the pleasure, along with several other members of staff, to attend the ANZAC Ceremony at the Cenotaph. Many members of the Perth community assembled to honour those who served our country to ensure our freedom and prosperity. The ANZAC tradition is strong and the Perth ceremony was very well attended. I was immensely proud to hear our choir sing beautifully and to recognise other students making contributions from our local high schools. Thank you to everyone who interrupted their holiday to make attendance at the ANZAC march and ceremony possible on this special day in the Australian calendar.
Welcome Dr Jane – MYTERN
The language and concepts of MYTERN are well-embedded across our school culture so it is fitting that Dr Jane Foster is the first speaker in our series of assembly guests, starting at yesterday’s assembly. Dr Jane is currently in Tasmania visiting schools and talking with educators, teachers, students and parents. Yesterday she spoke at our assembly about how resilience had played an important part in her own life. All certificates at our assembly this week have been presented to students who show high levels of resilience.
The guest speaker for our next assembly will be news reader and Southern Cross TV personality, Jo Palmer.
School Association
Our School Association has been busy during the past few weeks and have news to share which is listed later in this newsletter. The Association’s role is to provide assistance for the benefit of all students and families attending PPS, and to work with staff in the effective running of the school. Please talk with one of the newly elected committee members if you are available to help with one of their events or if you have questions or concerns to raise. With strong relationships and open communication, we can achieve so much more together.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN is this week for grades 3 and 5 students at PPS, and every other school in Australia. Students in grades 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be tested in reading, writing, spelling, conventions of language and numeracy. This year the tests are online, apart from the grade 3 writing test. Results of tests will be shared with parents later in the year. Assessments help teachers and schools to know what students can do well and what they need to learn next.
Keeping Students Safe
Recently we have been practising a number of our fire, evacuation and lock-down protocols to ensure that students are all aware of the processes for these in case of an emergency. Last week all classes were involved in the Tas Fire Services’ Fire Education program. This is another example our ongoing commitment to student safety. We will practise fire, evacuation and lock-down drills again later in the term, in line with policy requirements.
Support Staff Week
Next week we celebrate the contribution and importance of support staff in our schools. We have an amazing team of support staff at PPS and they make an incredible contribution to the education of Perth students. It takes a whole school of dedicated and skilled employees to create the inclusive and tolerant culture we have at PPS. Please speak to some of our dedicated support staff to let them know you appreciate their work.
Mothers’ Day stall success
Many thanks to everyone who helped to make our 2019 Mothers’ Day stall such a success.
Children were delighted to see such a wonderful range of gifts on display. This made the choices for the special mums and other women in their lives quite tricky. Thank you for all donations, especially the hand-made craft items, which were especially popular with children. All helpers and donations helped to make a difference to our highly successful Mothers’ Day stall. Total raised will be announced soon.
Farewells
We say farewell to Taylah – moved to West Launceston and Conrad – moved to Evandale Primary School. Best wishes for your new schools.
