School Resumes for Students

From the Principal

Our end of year session at the Launceston Aquatic Centre this week was an occasion for students to celebrate the achievements of the year with friends and classmates. The day was very hot and the water environment was perfect for cooling off. Congratulations to everyone for following our protocols and for their Strive for Five behaviours. Smiles all round were a good indicator of the fun enjoyed by everyone. It was good to come back to school to enjoy an icy pole, some cooler conditions and a calmer environment before the end to the day. Thank you to parents who joined us on the day.

Reporting to Parents

Last week we sent home reports on student progress with an A-E rating and a rating against student work habits. This was in line with AEU bans and work to rule stipulations. The DoE has released new minimum guidelines for report writing which will come into effect from 2019. Please talk with your child’s teacher if you have questions about your child’s report, or if you would like to share celebrations of their progress.

We also have some staff members who will be changing positions and/or moving to new schools. We would like to acknowledge and pay tribute to the outstanding work of all members of our team this year. In particular, we recognize the following members who will be moving to new schools or positions and not returning to us in 2019:

Lindy Bailey – Lindy has been our Chaplain for the past three years and has provided dedicated support, care, guidance and comfort for students, families and staff during her time with us. Best wishes for your move to the south of the State. Lindy’s replacement will be the newly appointed Chaplain, Chris Brooks.

Juanita Du Vergier - Juanita has been PPS school nurse for the past two years and has fulfilled her role with energy, enthusiasm and commitment. Thank you for your commitment to healthy lifestyles, nutrition, sleep wellbeing and health and happiness at Perth. We wish you well in your new position at Northern Support School. Welcome to Rebecca Beeston who will join our team as School Nurse in 2019.

Damien Eeles - Damien started with us at the beginning of this year as his very first teaching position. He has done an excellent job teaching PE and STEM across the school, organising carnivals and leading the SWSP. Best wishes to Damien in his search for a suitable teaching position for 2019.

Joy Wilmshurst – Joy joined us in Term 3 as a teacher on grade 1 / 2. Joy has worked hard to develop relationships with students and parents and has been an asset to our team. Best wishes in your search for your next position.

Shelley Perkins – Shelley is no stranger to the PPS community and has worked with us before as both a teacher and a teacher assistant. Shelley has many skills and this time worked as a grade 1 / 2 teacher. Thank you Shelley for your excellent work with us and best wishes in finding a suitable position for 2019.

Carla Peacock – Carla started with us as a teacher assistant at the beginning of 2017 and has worked with many students across the school.  Carla’s main role was supporting literacy learning in F-1 CW, but she also worked to support numeracy for other students.  Since graduating as a teacher Carla has taught on many different classes across our school.  We wish Carla well in her appointment to Brighton Primary School.

Fran Horan – Social Worker – Fran has accepted a permanent position with Youth Health and we are delighted for her. Thank you for the excellent support and caring relationships you have offered to students and families within our school community. Best wishes for your future role. Our new social worker is yet to be confirmed.

Kristina Tachtsis – Speech and Language Pathologist – Kristina has provided outstanding service to our students and school community in the 12 months she has been with us. She has worked hard to support students and communicate clearly with parents and teachers for best learning results. Thank you for your excellent support. Kristina is returning to Victoria. Hollie Flaherty has been appointed as our new Speech and Language Pathologist.

Leavers’ Dinner

Congratulations to grade six students who attended their Leavers’ Dinner at the UTAS Stadium on Thursday last week to celebrate the end of grade six. Students appreciated tasty meals and spent much of the evening dancing and enjoying the company of friends. It was great to see the Strive for Five so clearly on display by students. Many thanks to Mrs Whyman and Ms Dick for all your efforts ensuring an enjoyable evening for all.

Annual School Review

Recently we have been working on our Annual School Review which forms part of the DoE’s requirements for all schools. This year we report against our three priorities: Sustaining Excellence, Literacy – Building Independent and Successful Writers, Numeracy – Building Deep Problem Solvers. Further information about these priorities is provided in the review which is available for viewing at the office.

Merry Christmas

Wishing all our school families and the Perth community a very Merry Christmas and very best wishes for the new year. Hoping everyone has a wonderful, safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone back healthy and ready to go for another year of exciting learning in 2019. Happy holidays everyone!

Student Bus Fares 2019

A student can access the child student fare between the ages of 4 and 16 years without proof of concession eligibility.

From the age of 16 until the end of the year in which they turn 18, students can

access the child student fare as long as they are still studying full-time (600+ hours per year), and

are enrolled in an education facility recognised by the Department of Education.

These students may be asked to present student identification to access the child student fare.

In some circumstances, students may be eligible to travel for free between home and school during the school year.

In 2019, the standard child student fare is $1.80. (Please note this fare is subject to change in the future).

A minimum discount of 20% on the child student fare is available if travelling on a bus service which uses electronic ticketing, or by purchasing a 10-ride ticket.

For information on ticketing, contact your bus service operator.
