Last week we welcomed Dr Hilary Hollingsworth to our school to talk with three different focus groups about the way we report to parents on student learning. Hilary is a researcher at the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER) and is reporting about possible changes to the current format of reports. Thank you to parents who were able to meet with Hilary at short notice to share ideas about what works well in terms of providing useful information about your child’s learning and progress at school, and what needs to be changed and improved. Hilary’s report will help to inform the changes to the next format of school reports. Her report will be published next year.
Science Talent Search Award
Last weekend Ms Dick and a group of students attended the presentation ceremony of the TSTS to receive their category awards as well as a special award recognising the significant contribution PPS has made to investigations in science. Teachers and students at our school have shown dedication and deep interest in broad areas of science by entering many categories of TSTS over many years. The award recognises this dedication and commitment. Congratulations Ms Dick for your commitment and inspiration to young scientists of the future! Please admire our special trophy on display in the main foyer!
SWSP and Grade 1 / 2 Water Orientation
Last week and this week students from grades 1 – 5, and some grade 6 students have been involved in our annual swimming and water safety program and/or water orientation program. This is an exciting opportunity for students with excellent timing of the program this year, leading into the summer months. This means students gain the maximum benefit of the 10 days swimming instruction, before the warmer summer weather begins in earnest. The timing of the SWSP varies each year for every school, so that all schools take a turn at the most and least favourable times and no school is advantaged. This year has been good for us. The planning involved in moving almost 200 students to and from the pool each day is enormous. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in additional duties, swaps, changes to normal timetables and covering classes to ensure the swim program can proceed. The smiles on children’s faces is enough to let us know that the extra efforts are worthwhile!
Cyberspace and Ethical Responsibility
Recently we have been hearing much about cyber bullying and the dangers of this social peril and its effects on the emotional health of young people. Using social media and free speech comes with a range of responsibilities. At Perth Primary School we publish our values clearly and offer to share and talk with all parents and anyone who has matters of concern or questions they want to ask. Please come to discuss your queries or concerns with us rather than publishing your ideas and opinions with people who have no answers and no control over what happens in schools. Our values of respect, courage, aspiration and creativity guide our actions at school and in all interactions at all times. We are proud of what we do, write, say and how we work hard to make a difference. These values mean we have no right of reply to those who write untrue, one-sided and liablous information about our school on social media sites.
School Association AGM
Last week the School Association met for the final meeting of 2018. The date was set for the AGM in March 2019 which will include the election of several new members of the association. Three general member positions will be elected in the March elections to replace parent representatives who are standing down after their service has ended. We are most thankful to Tiarnee Miller, Kate Spencer and Felicity Cooper who have been generous with their time and made a significant contribution to our school. Thank you for your expertise and ideas to assist with making Perth Primary School the best possible for everyone.
Respectful Student Behaviour Policy

Canteen Accreditation – Silver
Congratulations to Jan Maher and the wonderful canteen helpers for their outstanding work to achieve official Silver Accreditation for our canteen menu and service. This means everything about our canteen complies with the School Canteen Association’s regulations for health for Australian children. There will be some changes to the menu and some price rises in line with CPI for next year. These will be published later.

NMPSSA Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to our team who recently competed in the NMPSSA Swimming Carnival. Our team demonstrated a very high level of resilience, sportsmanship and team spirit. We are very proud of all their efforts. A big thank you to Hagley Farm School for hosting the event and we look forward to participating again in 2019.
Grade 3-5 Swimming and Water Safety Program
As Tasmania is an island state surrounded by coast line, as well as inland waters and other aquatic environments, swimming and water safety are necessary life skills that add to our health, fitness and wellbeing. Activities such as fishing, boating, water play, swimming, surfing, diving etc. require swimming and water safety skills.
In acknowledgement of the importance that water safety and swimming capabilities play throughout our lives, the Department of Education mandates that all students learn to be safe and competent in water environments, as a component of the primary curriculum. Every effort is made to ensure that each child is made to feel safe and relaxed during this program.
The Department of Education Swimming and Water Safety Program consists of 10 lessons over two weeks for each year group in years 3, 4 and 5.
The dates for our school program are: Monday 26 November – Friday 7 December
The first eight days will be completed at the Glen Dhu Pool and the final two days are at the Launceston Aquatic Centre.
Each class will have lessons according to the following timetable:
Group |
Times |
4/5A and grade 3s from 2/3A |
11.15am – 12.15pm |
3/4A and grade 5s from 5/6A & 5/6B |
12.15pm – 1.15pm |
Your child will need to bring along the following items every day throughout their program
- Swimming gear – including bathers and swimming cap
- Students are to use their swimming carnival cap
- Towel and plastic/swimming bag to put wet clothes in
- Any medication (e.g. asthma medication) that may be needed at the poolside.

Move Well Eat Well Survey
As part of the TASSO’s collaborative work with other Tasmanian groups working to achieve the best possible education for our students it is hoped you could assist with the Move Well Eat Well Primary School Evaluation Survey by sharing this survey link with parents/carers at your school.
It is understood that not all Primary Schools, Support Schools and District Schools are Move Well Eat Well Schools, however the program evaluators are eager to have feedback from all parents of primary school aged students. The survey only takes about 5 minutes and the link is in the link below and is open until December 5th, 2018.

Thank you in the hope that you will participate and share the link to this survey.

A student can access the child student fare between the ages of 4 and 16 years without proof of concession eligibility.
From the age of 16 until the end of the year in which they turn 18, students can

These students may be asked to present student identification to access the child student fare.
In some circumstances, students may be eligible to travel for free between home and school during the school year.
In 2019, the standard child student fare is $1.80. (Please note this fare is subject to change in the future).
A minimum discount of 20% on the child student fare is available if travelling on a bus service which uses electronic ticketing, or by purchasing a 10-ride ticket.
