From the Principal………
Industrial Action
The current industrial action has challenged us all in many ways. Schools are places of tolerance, respect and inclusion and are not the place for political views to be aired or discussed openly. Thank you to parents and members of our school community for your support and understanding at this time. Public sector unions have called a stop work meeting and the Minister has decided that our school will be closed on Tuesday 27th November until 10.30am. Please see the attached letter for further details.
Fundraising Committee - Congratulations
Huge congratulations must go to Jacqui Dalton and her team of dedicated helpers for the huge success of the Open Air Cinema Night last week. This was the first time this fundraising venture had been tried at our school… and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Although the weather was not kind, everyone in attendance had a wonderful time. The movie was fabulous, the popcorn smell drifted through the hall and everyone had a great time. Congratulations again on your efforts to raise a total of $1600. This money will go towards the promotion of Arts programs for students at PPS in 2019. Programs such as Dance Baby Dance, ESK Band and the current Drama group with Gerard Lane are examples of this. More details about the 2019 provision will be available soon.
Student Excellence at PPS
Congratulations to Caitlin who will be travelling to Victoria to represent Tasmania in the Australian All Schools Athletics Championship on Saturday 24th November. Caitlin will compete in discus. We are very proud of her efforts and we know that she will do her very best to represent both her State and school at the highest level. What a great achievement!
Another excellent achievement was celebrated by Zaria and her family last week when they attended the Award Presentations for NAPLAN 2018. Minister Rockliff presented Zaria with her award for being Top in School in this year’s NAPLAN assessments. Congratulations Zaria on your outstanding achievement.
Also acknowledged at the NAPLAN Award presentations, were grade 7 and former Perth Primary students, Jack and Orion, who were both awarded with Top 1% Awards. Congratulations to both Jack and Orion for their outstanding results.
Schools Triathlon Challenge
Several years ago we introduced the Schools Triathlon Challenge as an opportunity for students to trial something new and another chance to build their fitness and wellbeing. This year we have a team who have trained diligently with Mr Muir and Mrs Clements so that they are now prepared and ready to tackle the rigorous course at Devonport Bluff. Best wishes to everyone involved for a great day at the beach! Thank you to parents for their support and to Mrs Clements and Mr Muir for their time to train the team.
Drama Performance
On Sunday evening a very excited group of students will step onto the stage for their debut performance in the Princess Theatre before an appreciative audience of proud parents and others. Students have been working with Gerard Lane and other crew to refine their stage skills. They have learnt lines and really shown a growth mindset. We wish them well for an amazing experience. Perhaps a star will be born? Many thanks to Mrs Colson for her hard work to prepare the group for this exciting opportunity.
Reporting to Parents Focus Group
On Monday next week Dr Hillary Hollingsworth, researcher from Australian Council for Educational Research, will visit our school to meet with parents, students and teachers to talk about assessment and reporting. She will meet with a numbers of focus groups to talk about alternatives to the traditional school report and how changes to reporting might be useful. If you would like to participate in the parent focus group please contact the office.
Volunteers’ Morning Tea
Volunteers are very important to us and definitely help us in so many ways. Volunteers assist us to focus on student learning outcomes and help students to do their very best learning. We want to show our appreciation for the many ways that you assist by honouring you at a special morning tea . . . and we’ve sent out invitations. Sometimes though, things go astray. Invitations get lost in the mail or squashed in the bottom of school bags. Sometimes a child is away or the invitation is lost from the ‘special’ keeping place. All volunteers are warmly invited to join us for this special ‘THANK YOU’ morning tea. We want you to know just how special you are and how much of a difference you make to our school.

Congratulations to all our students who participated in last week’s swimming carnival. It was amazing to see the high level of participation and incredible effort and perseverance demonstrated by all involved. Thank you to all the family members who volunteered some of their spectating time throughout the day to assist with the backstroke events, it was much appreciated.
The final results of the day were:
- Bramich 1st on 1635 points
- Hirst 2nd on 1520 points
- Lyons 3rd on 1480 points

Grade 3-5 Swimming and Water Safety Program
As Tasmania is an island state surrounded by coast line, as well as inland waters and other aquatic environments, swimming and water safety are necessary life skills that add to our health, fitness and wellbeing. Activities such as fishing, boating, water play, swimming, surfing, diving etc. require swimming and water safety skills.
In acknowledgement of the importance that water safety and swimming capabilities play throughout our lives, the Department of Education mandates that all students learn to be safe and competent in water environments, as a component of the primary curriculum. Every effort is made to ensure that each child is made to feel safe and relaxed during this program.
The Department of Education Swimming and Water Safety Program consists of 10 lessons over two weeks for each year group in years 3, 4 and 5.
The dates for our school program are: Monday 26 November – Friday 7 December
The first eight days will be completed at the Glen Dhu Pool and the final two days are at the Launceston Aquatic Centre.
Each class will have lessons according to the following timetable:
Group |
Times |
4/5A and grade 3s from 2/3A |
11.15am – 12.15pm |
3/4A and grade 5s from 5/6A & 5/6B |
12.15pm – 1.15pm |
Your child will need to bring along the following items every day throughout their program
- Swimming gear – including bathers and swimming cap
- Students are to use their swimming carnival cap
- Towel and plastic/swimming bag to put wet clothes in
- Any medication (e.g. asthma medication) that may be needed at the poolside.
1/2 Water Orientation Program
Between Monday 26 November and Monday 3 December Grade 1 and 2 students will participate in our Water Orientation and Swimming Program at the Glen Dhu Swimming Pool (outdoor pool).
This year we have split into two separate groups due to the very high number of students in Grade 1 and 2. This is necessary for safety and allows a lower adult-to-student ratio in each teaching group which benefits all students involved. Each group will have three sessions at the pool. Group A will consist of students from Mrs Lloyd’s, Mrs Clayton/Wyatte’s and the majority of Mrs Atkins’ classes. Group B will consist of Mrs Wilmshurst/Perkins’, Miss Bolch’s and six students from Mrs Atkins’ class (students to be confirmed).
Each class will have lessons according to the following timetable:
Group |
Times |
Dates |
Group A |
1.15pm – 2.15pm* |
26 November to 28 November (3 days) |
Group B |
1.15pm – 2.15pm* |
29 November to 3 December (3 days) |
*Please note that actual swimming times are from approximately 1.30pm-2pm.
Children will work in small groups with the emphasis on safety, having fun in the water and helping children to become adjusted to a variety of water experiences.
Children will need their bathers and towel as well as a plastic bag (or swimming bag) for wet gear. The wearing of swimming caps is compulsory at Glen Dhu Pool. Swimming caps will be provided free of charge to all students on the first day of the program.
Children will travel to and from the Glen Dhu Pool by bus, supervised by class teachers.
We have been fortunate to secure a qualified Austswim instructor to support the program. They will be teaching small groups along with Mr Johnson, Mr Eeles and class teachers.
Parents are most welcome to come along and watch, but due to Department of Education guidelines, parents are not able to enter change rooms at any time. The disabled toilet will be available if required.
If you have any questions please contact Mr Johnson at school.
Country Gold Cricket
Congratulations to Brodie and Hayden on being selected in this year’s NMPSSA East Cricket team to compete at the Country Gold Cricket Carnival. Both boys have demonstrated a high level of skill and sportsmanship within the cricket context. Everyone at Perth Primary wish you both the best of luck at the carnival.
