From the Principal………

On Monday this week we welcomed members of the Tasmania Hobart Hurricanes cricket team to our school to run a cricket clinic for grade 1 / 2 children in the hall. ‘Captain’s Challenge’ is a program the Big Bash have offered around the State, and students certainly loved the opportunity to practise their throwing and catching skills, and to learn about batting from the experts! Simon Milenko and Alex Doolan spoke to the group about what it takes to be a professional player in the team and how to improve game skills. It’s almost time for the cricket bats to come out ….. so we will look forward to seeing lots of children practising as soon as the weather permits!

School Improvement Surveys

Parents will shortly receive an invitation to complete the annual School Satisfaction Survey which will be sent home with your child. This survey collects provides value information about your views about what we are doing well and how we can improve. Please complete the survey either online or by returning the paper copy to the office. Survey responses are anonymous and confidential. The survey is completed each year by parents, staff and senior students to provide feedback about all Tasmanian government schools.

TSTS

Congratulations to our budding scientists and thank you to Ms Dick, parents and other adults who gave up their Sunday to accompany our student at the judging day at East Launceston Primary School. Opportunities to showcase their work and to mix and talk with others with similar interests is very important in developing skills and extending children’s talents. Well done everyone and congratulations to students who were mentioned in the awards and prizes for areas already judged. We look forward to final judging results for the Technology section in several weeks.

School Association

The School Association is a group of elected members who meet at times to discuss matters related to school business. The Association is governed by a constitution approved by the Minister for Education. The group meets at least once each term and approves policies and ratifies our budget. In line with the changes to the Education Act, the group discussed and ratified changes to a number of policies at this week’s meeting, including: Dress Code and Uniform Policy and the Levies and Charges Policy. The Fundraising sub-committee has planned two exciting events for later in the year with the annual Father’s Day stall happening very soon and a new exciting venture called Open Air Cinema planned for Friday 9th November. Look out for the details coming soon. We are most grateful for the work and support of the School Association in making our school the very best school possible.

School Companion Dog - Winx

Since mid last year Winx has been coming to school at times as part of our wellbeing and supportive school culture. She visits classrooms and the playground to help children and all members of our school community feel happy and settled at school. Research clearly shows that spending about 20 seconds with an animal which is warm and furry sets us on a clear pathway for a brighter and happier day. Winx has also been modelling our Strive for Five, expectations and some character qualities – particularly positivity and enthusiasm. She helps students learn about being in control. Winx has been specially trained to come onto school property and will undergo a further specialist therapy dog training course later in the year.

Welcomes and Farewells

This week we have welcomed Fran Horan as our new social worker. Fran replaced Sam Sturmer who moved to new schools to be closer to her home. We welcome Fran and look forward to her contribution to our school and our families. Welcome also to Joy Wilmshurst and Shelley Perkins who are teaching 1-2A until further notice. We look forward to your contribution to students’ learning at PPS.

Outside Construction Play Area

Help us fill our Outside Construction Play Area with creative 'leftovers' ie wood, blocks, planks. The primary use will be for creating car tracks and construction. Nothing with sharp edges or nails and as these items will be outside all the time they need to be reasonably weatherproof. Donated goods can be left at the RHS of the Grounds shed at the end of Fore Street. If you are unsure as to whether something is appropriate or not feel free to phone the school and speak with Lee or Lindy.

Canteen News…..

A message to families of a few things that will make your child/ren’s canteen experience even better:

  • QKR orders close at 8:50am Thursday mornings
  • We ask parents, where possible, to supply the correct change to prevent money being thrown in the bin as money is taped to lunch bags and it is children’s responsibility to take off the lunch bag
  • When ordering frozen fruit sticks or frozen yoghurt please ensure the voucher is taken off your paper bag before putting that in the bin. Please note only 1 frozen item to be ordered purchased per child.
  • Please put your order in the blue basket in your classroom before daily P.E.
  • Please make sure you write what you want on the order form, your name and your class.

Order online with Qkr (our preferred payment method)

This week’s healthy treat is Sultana Biscuits.
