3-6 Swimming Carnival 2018
Wednesday 14th November
3-6 Swimming Carnival
The Grade 3-6 Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday 14 November at Hagley Farm School.
Buses will leave school at 9:00am for a 9:45am start. Students will leave the venue by 1.45pm.
It is an expectation that all students participate in as many events as possible, as there are events to suit all ability levels (see event order).
Students need to wear their sports uniform (clearly labelled with their name). The Hagley Farm School pool is an indoor heated facility, and students will need to bring warm clothing, lunch, plenty to drink (water), bathers, towel and a plastic bag/swimming bag for wet items. A House coloured swimming cap will be provided for all students on the day.
Students will be seated in House groups (Bramich, Hirst and Lyons). Parents and family members are welcome as there is plenty of seating provided on the spectator side of the pool. Only officials can be in the marshalling, judging, recording and student House areas.
Event order:
- 25m Freestyle (Grade 3-6)
- Across Pool – only for students who didn’t participate in 25m freestyle
- 25m Breaststroke (Grade 3/4)
- 50m Breaststroke (Grade 5/6)
- 25m Backstroke (Grade 3-6)
- The Reverse Steeple Chase (noodle between legs and ducking under lane ropes) – only for students who didn’t participate in breaststroke and/or backstroke
- 50m Freestyle (Grade 4-6)
- The Wet Butler (carry a cup on a saucer with water in it across the pool going under lane ropes while keeping cup out of water) – only for students who didn’t participate in 50m freestyle
- 50m Backstroke (Grade 4-6)
- Swim across the pool – only for students who didn’t participate in 50m backstroke
- Cork Collecting relays – only for students not selected in 25m relays
- 25m Relays (each swimmer completes 1 lap – House teams are selected from individual times on the day)
It is extremely important that all students participating in stroke events can swim at least 25m competently.
A Perth Primary Swimming Team will be selected from results on the day, as heats in all stroke events are timed, to compete in the NMPSSA Swimming Carnival.
Best of luck to everyone involved!
From the Principal………
On the weekend I spent some time searching for song lyrics for connections with RESPECT. The neatest fit which everyone might know would be Aretha Franklin’s hit from 1967. Essentially it describes the relationship between a man and woman but the concept of RESPECT is the same.
A dictionary search defines respect as “due regard for the feelings, wishes or rights of others”. It is a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something based on their abilities, qualities or achievements.
Our supportive and inclusive school culture is built on the concepts of mutual respect, trust, responsibility and equity. All families are welcome in our inclusive culture. Membership comes with responsibility and expectations that all members follow for behaviour, social skills and participation. We work hard to develop shared communication between home and school and invite parents to talk with us if there are messages to share. Please talk with teachers or seek out a member of the leadership team if you have something we should know about which will assist us in supporting your child’s learning. Schools are about enhancing the learning outcomes for ALL children in our school community.
Social Media – Delight or Danger?
Recently some stories have been circulating about a very small number of parents sharing negative messages about their school via closed Facebook groups. As I know our school community is all about inclusion and transparency, I am confident this would not be happening in our school. Closed Facebook groups are all about exclusion and about something to hide. Please talk with me if you have concerns about student learning. We are doing our best to ensure that every child is supported to learn, remain safe and have a happy and successful time at school. Parent support is essential to help us with this goal. Members of staff work tirelessly and give their all to students and their learning. They deserve respect and support for their efforts rather than blame and criticism. Please see me at school if you have questions or want to make comments.
Uniform Update
This week we will be continuing to remind students about our uniform and dress code policy. This will mean asking students to remove any non-uniform items of clothing and accessories. Teachers have a special safe place to keep personal items for students until the end of the school day. Students will be offered a replacement item of school uniform to wear for the day if they require an extra layer for warmth. Our research shows clear links between wearing school uniform and appropriate choices in behaviour, social connections and focus on learning. Your support with ensuring your child comes to school every day in full school uniform is greatly appreciated. Our uniform policy is endorsed by the School Association and Student Leadership group. Thank you for your support.
Behaviour Choices Communication with Parents
In line with our goal to communicate clearly and closely with parents about matters at school we have updated our Reflection template. We hope this will better communicate the process of reflection at school. Students will record what happened as well as the actions they took when they lost control or made some poor choices. Consequences will also be listed.
The Reflection template will be sent home with children for matters where students spend time in reflection. We ask that parents discuss the incident with their child, sign the form and return it to school the next day. This makes the process more efficient. Phone calls will still be made for more serious incidents.
VSJV Project Community Drop In Session
This Community Drop In Session will be held in our hall today to share details of the project – including information about jobs, design, community and contracts. Times are 2.30 – 4.00 and 5.30 – 7.30pm.
See the link below for more information.

School Association Open Air Cinema
This major school event will be held this Friday and promises to be a phenomenal success. This is due in large part to the amazing organisation of Jacqui Dalton and her team. Congratulations to the Fundraising Group for their initiative and creative thinking in planning ahead and showing such confidence with this initiative. Limited tickets are still available. Book online now so that you are not disappointed. Fingers crossed for a fine evening to ensure that we all have an enjoyable time.
Welcomes and Farewells
Last week we farewelled the Miller family as they left for Queensland. Best wishes for your new school to Taylah, Isabelle and Hayley and their parents.
We continue to enrol a number of new families for 2019. Please encourage new neighbours and friends to contact us so that we have accurate numbers for next year.

This week’s treat is Chocolate Brownie.
A message to families of a few things that will make your child/ren’s canteen experience even better:
- QKR orders close at 8:50am Thursday mornings
- We ask parents, where possible, to supply the correct change to prevent money being thrown in the bin as money is taped to lunch bags and it is children’s responsibility to take off the lunch bag

- Please put your order in the blue basket in your classroom before daily P.E.
- Please make sure you write what you want on the order form, your name and your class.
