Together We Inspire Award

On Friday evening it was an enormous honour to accept the Tasmanian Together We Inspire Award for Numeracy Champions on behalf of the Perth Primary team. The MAT.X journey at PPS has been both rewarding and stimulating has led to new learning for students and staff. We look forward to continuing to work in different and collaborative ways to enhance and benefit students and their thinking.

Respect, Aspiration, Courage and Growth

Last term in our newsletter we started to unpack the values in the DoE Strategic Plan 2018 – 2021 – Respect, Aspiration, Courage and Growth and to think about what values mean. Our focus started with Respect. We have continued with the value of Respect which is also prominent in our PPS Strategic Plan 2018 – 2021 – Respect, Aspiration, Courage, Creativity.

At PPS we have worked hard to build a school culture where every student is known by name and everyone is supported to learn to their best potential. The character qualities students bring to their learning such as Growth Mindset, positivity, enthusiasm and curiosity make a big difference in their success as learners. Respect underpins everything, and without the basics in place, all other efforts are less effective.

Uniform Policy

Starting this week we will be reminding every student about our school dress code and uniform policy which has a strong element of choice based on navy uniform options which are available from the uniform shop. Wearing uniform builds a sense of belonging and respect.

As the wearing of endorsed uniform strongly and clearly impacts behaviour choices, social connections and focus on learning, teachers will be instructing students to remove any items which are not part of our endorsed uniform. All teachers will have a special bag to keep non-uniform items of clothing/jewellery/hair accessories until the end of the day, when they will be passed back to students to take home.

We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to come to school in PPS uniform only as this will best support their learning, social connections and behaviour choices at school. Please contact me at school if you have further questions.

Infant Fun Day

On Friday this week hundreds of early childhood children from local schools will be visiting PPS to participate in the annual Infant Fun Day. Many thanks to Ben Johnson and our team of organising teachers and members of the School Association for their efforts to prepare for the big day. Much effort and planning goes into the preparation for such an event to ensure that everything goes smoothly. Congratulations to our senior students who have been nominated to lead activities on the day. This shows your leadership skills and responsibility. Fingers crossed that the weather is kind and everyone has a great day.

School Association Meeting

Our School Association met this week to discuss various matters including feedback to the revised school zones. Parents wanting to comment on the new Perth school zone are able to make contact with a School Association member.

The Open Air Cinema was also discussed as the main fundraiser organised by the fundraising subcommittee. Please spread the word and buy your tickets early to assist with organisation.

Safe and Ethical Behaviour Online

Last year we participated in online training on how to by cyber safe to help members of our school community to become safe online citizens. We have shared this information with senior students in class and with parents through the newsletter. Last year we conducted parent information sessions about safety online, attended by many parents. Encouraging all online users to think carefully about anything they post and the affects that messages will have on others will have is critical. Messages posted online are permanent. This means they are there forever and cannot be deleted – even if you remove the post it is still in cyberspace. Once you post, you lose control over where the information goes and who have access to your words and pictures. We will be reminding students about this message again in the weeks ahead and ask that all parents help to remind children about being cyber safe and ethical. A useful online resource can be found at:

Toys at School

Our key focus at school is learning, getting along with each other and having fun in a safe and respectful manner. We are well-supplied with a wide range of sports equipment and other games and indoor materials so that play times can be fun times when we share and take turns. We have been reminding students that ‘toys’ should be left at home as they distract children from their learning and interrupt others, including teachers. This particularly applies to small, collectable toys that are precious as they sometimes become the centre of a student’s world and interrupt their learning to such an extent that they cannot make sensible choices and they lose control. We appreciate you assisting your child to be a good learner by leaving toys at home so that they follow our Strive for Five:

I am a Learner
I am Responsible
I am Respectful
I am Safe
I am Resilient

Stop Work Action

You may be aware that there has been some industrial action today involving some members of the Education Union attending a Stop Work Rally in Launceston. To minimise the disruption to our school community we have taken steps to ensure our duty of care is maintained whilst allowing those staff members who wish, to attend the Stop Work Action.

Welcome and farewell

This week we welcome Mila who started in Kinder at the beginning of term. We farewell the Miller family who leave us heading to Melbourne. Farewell to Taylah, Isabelle and Hayley. We will miss you all very much and send best wishes for your new home and school.

2019 Planning

Although 2019 seems to be many months away we have started some preliminary planning for next year. Kindergarten enrolments and enrolments for other grades are now being accepted. We would also appreciate hearing from families whose enrolment status will change for 2019. Please let us know if you are not intending to be with us in 2019, or if you know of a family who is intending to enrol so that our information is as accurate as is possible.

Canteen News…..

This week’s treat is Blueberry Muffin.

A message to families of a few things that will make your child/ren’s canteen experience even better:

  • QKR orders close at 8:50am Thursday mornings
  • We ask parents, where possible, to supply the correct change to prevent money being thrown in the bin as money is taped to lunch bags and it is children’s responsibility to take off the lunch bag
  • When ordering frozen fruit sticks or frozen yoghurt please ensure the voucher is taken off your paper bag before putting that in the bin. Please note only 1 frozen item to be ordered purchased per child.
  • Please put your order in the blue basket in your classroom before daily P.E.
  • Please make sure you write what you want on the order form, your name and your class.

Order online with Qkr (our preferred payment method)

Volunteers wanted, please contact the office if you can help for a few hours on Thursday.

MYTERN

Canteen War on Waste

Perth Primary School Canteen is working towards being plastic free.

Mrs Maher and her helpers in the canteen have been doing a wonderful job changing single use plastic packaging for re-usable and recyclable or compostable packaging. Here are a few of their new strategies: some suggested by the Waste Warriors but many devised by the Canteen team as they work to keep us healthy and well fed in the most sustainable way possible.

The Waste Warriors are also doing their bit providing washing up water near the bins so the yoghurt tubs can be recycled instead of needing to be thrown away due to being dirty along with guiding students to put their waste in the correct bin. We now have metal spoons instead of plastic, popcorn in re-usable containers and students are asked to either pay online with the App or send canteen orders to school in a paper envelope or bag rather than ziplock bags.

Perth Primary doing their utmost to minimize their carbon footprint.
