From the Principal………
It’s been an absolute pleasure to visit classrooms and talk to students, family members and staff at school as I re-acquaint myself with our school environment after my unplanned leave during the first two terms of the year. I can see rigorous classroom programs in place and engaged and happy students at work and playing actively in our beautiful playgrounds. Thank you to the many people who have made me feel very welcome on my return to school. I will be working part-time for several weeks and gradually increasing my working week under medical supervision. Mrs Clements will remain as Acting Principal for the remainder of each week.
I would also like to acknowledge the excellent work of our whole team and particularly Acting Principal Mrs Clements, who has done an outstanding job in my absence, along with members of the leadership team – Mr Johnson, Mrs Adams, Mrs Chandler and Mrs Colson who have stepped in at very short notice to ensure our focus remains on student learning, excellence and relationships. The hard work of our whole staff, the teamwork and support offered by all members is a testament to our supportive culture which makes at Perth Primary School such a very special place for everyone.
Professional Learning – Student Free Day
Combined staff from Connect 6 schools all attended a professional learning session held at the Tailrace on Monday last week. The session helped us to understand the latest research about trauma and the developing brain and how different environmental circumstances affect brain development. Presenters from the Respectful Schools Respectful Behaviour team presented information from a range of current research and findings, including what we can do to assist children who find various situations at school challenging, over-stimulating or frightening. Children who suffer various types of trauma during their lives were of particular focus, with some strategies presented to assist and help with learning, feeling safe and recovery.
Photographers Visiting Our School
Today we have welcomed two professional photographers, Bethany and Clint, who were at school to take some marketing photos on behalf of the Department of Education. We were pleased to highlight some of our flagship programs and features of our beautiful school and showcase our facilities and stunning grounds. Many thanks to members of our school community who were so co-operative with the photographers while they were working to a fairly tight timeframe. Congratulations also to students involved who were looking splendid in full school uniform.
Term 3 – Focused Learning Time
Already half the school year has passed and we are now into the second half of 2018. Traditionally Term 3 is a settled and focused learning time and we have made plans for this term to be the same. Our goal is for student learning to be the main game at school, with students setting personal learning goals and working hard to achieve them. As I’ve visited classes I’ve been talking with students about goals they have set themselves for their learning and improvement this term. There are certainly some lofty and worthy goals being set and we know that when students come to school ready and prepared for learning their progress improves. Thank you to all families for your encouragement and support for your child’s learning.
Parent / Teacher Conversations
We finished Term 2 by sending home comprehensive written reports about student progress and providing the opportunity for members of every family to meet with their child’s teacher to discuss student progress. This is an important part of learning, and provides valuable information about what has been mastered and what learning comes next. Our records show a small number of families are yet to take up the invitation to talk with their child’s teacher. If you were not able to attend during the final week of Term two, please speak with your child’s teacher to negotiate a suitable time for a conversation. This will be of tremendous benefit for your child and their learning.
Wellbeing Priority Continues
Our priority on wellbeing continues at PPS with the Let’s Ride program starting in Week 5 this term. Grade 2 students will be involved again this year with the opportunity to work in a group with a visiting, qualified instructor, Mr Lark. Bikes and helmets are provided.
Transition
Transition visits and arrangements for our grade 6 students are already underway with visits to both Kings Meadows High School and Cressy District High School, as well as visiting speakers from both schools presenting information to our students. Please contact our office or speak with your child’s teacher if you have questions about this process.
Welcomes and Farewells
Farewell to Isaac and his family who have moved house and started at a new school in Launceston. We wish Isaac all the best at his new school.
Farewell to Ms Sturmer, Social Worker, who is leaving to move closer to her family on the East Coast. We are pleased to welcome to our new Social Worker is Ms Fran Horan.
Thank you and farewell to Miss White who has been with us for the past few weeks teaching 1-2A. Thank you for your hard work, focus on student learning and commitment to the class at short notice. Miss White will be travelling to Qld soon and we wish her a happy holiday. We look forward to seeing Miss White back at PPS to teach in other areas of the school in future.

For many months we have been searching for parents of 2019 5/6 students to help with the preparation of Milo/Milkshake which has traditionally been a valuable assistance to families towards next year’s camp expenses. Unfortunately limited parent help is available. From Week 5 Milo will be offered every week on Mondays as a fundraiser towards Chaplaincy.

Book Week
5-6A Inside the classroom
Students in 5-6A were happy and relieved to deliver their oral presentations as culminating performance for their Genius Hour projects at the end of last term. They had been asked to choose a “would you rather” topic such as would you rather be a commercial pilot or a pilot in the Airforce? Hours of research, analysis, comparison, drafting and presenting followed. Students were happy with their results and admitted that presenting to the class wasn’t that bad after all!
