From the Principal………
We are delighted to welcome Mrs Craw back to PPS next term after her period of extended leave. Mrs Craw will begin working two days a week and we look forward to seeing Mrs Craw to begin with on Monday and Wednesdays.
As Term 2 draws to an end it is an opportune time to reflect on some of the exciting experiences provided for students over the term. These include - Readers’ Cup, National Walk to School Day, Mother’s Day Stall, Cross Country, Winter sports years 5/6, Northern Midlands Cross County and State Athletics representatives, Waste Warriors, Milkshake volunteers, Eskleigh visits, ANZAC March representatives, Early Childhood Sports Fun day, Transition programs for year 5/6 students, City Mission Food Drive, Crazy Hair Day, National Simultaneous Storytime, Ditto’s Keep Safe program, Reading Ambassadors, lunchtime opportunities for F-2 led by year 6 students, Harry Potter Club, Story-time in the library and the list goes on! Ten weeks certainly goes quickly but a lot has happened in addition to quality teaching and learning within the classroom.
Parent / Teacher Conversations
Last week we welcomed many families for parent / teacher conversations where important information about progress, learning behaviours and future learning goals was shared. These home and school communication opportunities have a significant impact on student success. Thank you to all parents who took up this valuable opportunity. Please speak with your child’s teacher at your earliest opportunity if you were unable to attend to arrange a conversation.
A special thankyou to the School Association for providing a selection of delicious food for our staff during the late night parent teacher evening. Thanks to Ange, Lou, Jacqui, Felicity and Mel. It was very much appreciated by staff when working over an extended day.
Growth & Development
Beginning in week 2 of next term a whole school Growth and Development program will be led by our school nurse Juanita. This program will be taught in every class from Foundation to Year 6. The lessons are age appropriate and are tailored to suit children’s developmental stages and align with the Australian Curriculum. Parent information session are offered on Thursday 26th July at 9am and 2pm. Please let your child’s class teacher know in writing if you do not wish your child to be a part of this program.
Attendance
Our goal is for every child to be at school every day. This is so important for learning and allows teachers the opportunity to make a difference. Whilst we know this is not always possible and there are reasons why students can’t be at school from time to time, thank you and congratulations to all 137 students who have over 95% attendance. Our attendance last week reached 98% which was outstanding.
Professional Learning Day
Day 1 of Term 3 is mandated as a student-free day in all Tasmanian schools by the Minister for Education. All staff from Connect 6 schools will be involved in some focused work on brain development, engagement and differentiation at the Tailrace. We look forward to this opportunity to further our understandings in this area and its implications for student learning.
School Values -Respect
Respect is one of our key values in our Strategic Plan 2018-2021, and is prioritised in all learning to ensure we have a safe and supportive school community. When we work together we build a positive environment, and a culture based on respect for oneself, others and property. Being respectful and inclusive to everyone is critical in student wellbeing and achieving high quality learning goals. This work is seen in all classrooms and was celebrated on Tuesday with International Kindness Rock Day. All K-2 students found a beautifully painted rock with an inspirational message or image. Thank you to Adine for the hours of work in painting kindness rocks for every Early Childhood student at PPS.
Cross Country
Congratulations to the Northern Midlands Cross Country team who represented PPS last week. We were delighted to hear about the way students performed and conducted themselves and represented the school at the highest level. Outstanding results were shared by many students with Isabelle and Lucy returning with winning shields for their age groups. Congratulations to Lucy who has made the Tasmanian team for Cross Country following her outstanding result at Symons Plains.
Parking reminder
Drop off and pick up times at PPS are very busy and it is very important for safety reasons we are all mindful of everyone at this time. Parking is limited in the Kindergarten area and we ask that parents please use the drop-off zones provided in Fore Street for that purpose. At the front of the school the bus zone on Fairtlough Street is for buses only. This area is also very busy before school and at the end of the day and cannot be used as a drop off zone. Thank you to everyone for your care and consideration around student safety.
Congratulations to students in Foundation /1 Lloyd who led our Assembly this week, sharing a beautiful story and work around NAIDOC week, and confidently speaking in front of the large audience. I would also like to acknowledge those students who were recognised at the end of Term 2 with a Success Award in English or mathematics.
This week we welcomed Sam in year 4 and his family to PPS. I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful work from City Mission with Linda and Tynette supporting our Inside Out for Kids Program. Thank you to our UTAS Pre-Service Teachers Georgie, Ruth and Meg for their valuable contribution over the past six weeks. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all PPS families and the community a safe and enjoyable break. I look forward to seeing everyone ready for a great term of learning on Tuesday 24th July.

NMPSSA Cross Country Carnival

Last Friday I had the pleasure of accompanying our contingent of representatives for the 2018 NMPSSA Cross Country Carnival at Cressy District High School. We were lucky enough to set up next to my other school – Bracknell Primary, with both sets of students becoming fast friends and proceeding to cheer on each other together. This display of friendliness and sportsmanship would set a cheerful tone for the rest of the day.
Perth came away with two shields at the end of the day: Isabella placing first in the Grade 3 Girls race and Lucy running away with first in the grade 5 girls. Students placing in the top 10 in their respective events were: Charlie, Taylah, Georgie, Max, Joseph, Klarissa, Mackenzie and Harry. All students who participated in the event pushed themselves, showing grit and determination to do their very best on the day. Well done to everyone involved!

Canteen News…..
A message to families of a few things that will make your child/ren’s canteen experience even better:
- QKR orders close at 8:50am Thursday mornings
- We ask parents, where possible, to supply the correct change to prevent money being thrown in the bin as money is taped to lunch bags and it is children’s responsibility to take off the lunch bag
- When ordering frozen fruit sticks or frozen yoghurt please ensure the voucher is taken off your paper bag before putting that in the bin
- Please put your order in the blue basket in your classroom before daily P.E.
- Please make sure you write what you want on the order form, your name and your class.
