From the Principal
Parent/Community Involvement
It has been wonderful to see lots of parent involvement in the school over the past few weeks. It enriches our school and the environment when we see parents in classrooms interacting so positively with students, parents supporting reading in classrooms, parents assisting on excursions, parents helping with roles including school banking, milos and working in the canteen. Thank you to everyone who is helping in developing our students within the school environment. Interactions with lots of different people and different situations is so important in developing positive wellbeing and social skills.
Safety is of the utmost importance in the school environment. In the past fortnight we have practised a lockdown drill. This is part of the DoE requirements that safety procedures including fire drills are practised on a regular basis. This provides an opportunity for teachers to speak with their students around the importance of safety and how to act in the unlikely event of an emergency. Further drills, including some unknown will be practised throughout the year. This was our second practise for the year and students across the school acted responsibly, calmly and followed all instructions.
Personal safety is also very important for student wellbeing, building self-esteem and resilience. Last Thursday all Kinder to year 2 students participated in the Braveheart’s Personal Safety program called Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show – which provided age-appropriate information about body ownership and a right to be safe from an early age. Please talk to your child(ren) about these personal safety messages as a clear and consistent message between school and home helps to eliminate confusion.
It is a timely to reminder to parents around the importance of labelling all items of clothing. Our lost property basket is currently overflowing with unnamed items. This includes lunch containers. Please come and look in this basket for any lost items. Please also check that your child’s clothing is their’s as we also have some students who have lost named clothing.
Student Cabinet and Parliament members have organised a ‘Crazy Hair Day’ to be held next Wednesday 13th June. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation if they wish to participate. All proceeds from this day will be put towards purchasing a special item for the Cancer Council of Tasmania. Please remember that all hair products must be washed out by the following day. Student Cabinet members are also in the process of organising a raffle - tickets are 50cents each and 3 for $1. First prize - firewood - Second prize - milkshake maker. Student Cabinet members will be selling tickets in the coming weeks.
Our ELLA language program is now an important part of the Kindergarten program. Students are enjoying learning Chinese (Mandarin) through an interactive program on an iPad. This Early Languages program aims for students to become more comfortable with different languages early in life so that they can stay engaged with learning in later years of schooling. It is great to provide this opportunity for our students and to see the valuable learning opportunities created.
Many year 5 and 6 students are busily reading and planning creative team responses to books in preparation for the school based judging of Readers’ Cup at the end of next week. Following this, the winning team will be selected to represent Perth Primary at the inter-school judging on Thursday 28th June at Summerdale Primary School. It is very pleasing to have so many students challenging themselves in this area of the curriculum.
Recently all teachers were involved in a late night professional learning session led by our Principal Network Leader Shireen Thomas. Shireen led us through some clear directions around school improvement and ways for supporting continued improved learning outcomes for all students at Perth. This was an important opportunity for teachers to work together for an extended period of time to continue our journey around building a quality teaching framework combined with high expectations.
Last week we welcomed three University of Tasmania pre-service teaching education students who will be working in the school as part of their professional placement until the end of the term. Our students are fortunate to have extra assistance and leadership within some classrooms over this period. We value a close partnership with UTAS in support of quality teachers in our schools.
Parent Teacher discussions will be held in Week 9 of this term. This year we will be using the Schoolzine on-line booking system which will open on Wednesday 13th June (instructions will be provided through our Facebook page and Schoolzine app). Our late night session will be Tuesday 26th June. Other bookings will be available from Monday 25th through Thursday 28th June. We highly encourage all parents to attend a discussion with your child’s classroom teacher. It is a very important opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, their strengths and to set goals for the remainder of the year.
Good luck to our 40 representatives who will participate in the NMPSSA Cross Country on Thursday 14th June at Cressy DHS.
