Walk to School Safely

Principal’s Report
Term 2 is a very busy learning term and teachers are currently in the process of writing comprehensive reports for their students which will be sent home at the end of this term. It is important to acknowledge the time and effort that goes into quality reports that reflect knowing each and every student so well. Parent/teacher discussions will be held in week 9.
Numeracy
Building numerate students is a key priority at Perth and this year we are fortunate enough to be able to continue with MAT.X this year; an initiative where teachers plan together to provide the highest quality research based approach to teaching maths. You may notice students completing maths tasks that are quite different from the way maths was taught when you went to school? Teachers are using words such as persistence, challenge, effort, cooperation and posing tasks that students find challenging so they can learn to persist. Student effort is affirmed in ways such as - you did not give up even though you were stuck or you tried something different. Differentiated tasks are seen throughout a lesson with enabling and extending prompts.
Literacy
Reading continues to be a buzz at Perth with lots of fun and engaging opportunities currently underway. This includes 40 students involved in Readers’ Cup, over 30 year 4-6 students involved in lunch time opportunities with the Harry Potter Club, Reading Ambassador students leading across the school in many ways and all students a part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Many of our students are close to 100 nights of reading, another whole school and family approach. Wow!
Sports news
Perth was very well represented last Friday at the State Athletics carnival. Congratulations to the seven students who represented Perth and the Northern Midlands last Friday; Lucy, Lilliarna, Tylah, Harry, Jack, Isabelle, Taylah. They were wonderful representatives for PPS.
Good luck to all our students as they participate in the Cross Country tomorrow. This will begin promptly at 11.00am with the year 6 students in the first race. It is planned to conclude around lunchtime with the final event our Kindergarten students. House Captains will support students in the younger grades. The aim of this experience is to have fun, challenge yourself by running/walking a slightly longer distance and to work as a team to collect house points for participation. We hope to see everyone participating at the level they are able to.
Oncoming Winter
The cold weather has certainly settled in and whilst inside learning areas are warm for students please remember when outdoors students need to have a school jumper or spray-jacket and coat. Where possible students are outdoors at all opportunities, including daily PE, recess and lunch breaks. Filling their lungs with fresh air and the opportunity to run and use some energy is important for concentration and learning.
With a bout of sickness hitting a number of our students and families it is an important time to remember the importance of getting adequate amounts of sleep, drinking water and healthy eating. Ten hours a day is the minimum amount of sleep recommended for Primary aged students. Importantly it is during sleep that our children’s bodies grow and repair, recover from illness and provide the basis for balanced mental health.
Community connections
It was very special to see so many mums enjoying the recent Kinder Mother’s Day afternoon tea. Students served prepared scones jam and cream and entertained their mums with a beautiful song throughout the afternoon. Thank you to all mums for finding the time to be a part of this special event.
Thank you again to the School Association for co-ordinating such an impressive Mother’s Day stall. Students had so many beautiful items to select from. It was like walking into a shop! I know mums really appreciate those special gifts that come from classrooms and they are very special when students get to make their own purchases.
On Friday 18th May students participated in the annual Walk Safely to School Day. Students met teachers at a number of starting points whilst others walked with their families. This is a really important way we continue to build this strong community culture which was enjoyed by us all. Thank you to everyone involved. Student Cabinet members acknowledged walkers with stickers on arrival to school. The Student Parliament is also promoting safe riding to school and will be looking out for students riding safely to and from school. Each assembly some students showing safe riding behaviours will be acknowledged.
We have a very exciting community connection which will begin in the coming weeks with VEC Civil Engineers who were the successful tenders for the development of two roundabouts on either end of the Perth bypass. Our students will be involved with propagating and planting for this area over the next two years and there will be a number of opportunities for us to work within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) and MY Education and to enable students to see some of these important connections for now and into the future. I look forward to sharing more information around this.
Students from Perth Primary participated in National Simultaneous Storytime today. Our Reading Ambassadors shared the picture book Hickory Dickory Dash to students in the hall. This included our LiL students and parents, Eskleigh residents and all PPS students. It was fantastic to see primary students so confidently sharing this story to a large audience. This annual event involves all students reading the same book at the same time across Australia.
This week is Chaplaincy week and it is a significant time for us to acknowledge the wonderful work that Lindy does in our school and how many students and families she positively impacts. It is also National Volunteers week. We have a number of wonderful volunteers in our school who also support many students to help make their day special. Thank you for your wonderful contribution to our school.
Last week a large framed print of Georgia Baker who represented Australia at the Rio Olympics was donated to the school by the Tate family. The family felt that hanging this at Perth Primary school represented a special reminder of where cycling has taken Georgia from her local town and Primary school. Thank you to the Tate family. I know this will be treasured and admired by the students for many years to come.
